There have been a lot of requests for the translations for Gangs of Wasseypur lyrics ( Written by apna Varun Grover and Piyush Mishra). So here are the ‘adaptions’ of the lyrics in English (as the team would like to call it).

English adaptations by:  Renuka Kunzru, Neeraj Ghaywan, and Varun Grover.

Renuka Kunzru (with Neeraj Ghaywan) has done the subtitling of both the parts of Gangs of Wasseypur and you have seen her in a cameo in ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. She’s the girl (Mala) at the airport the friends’ gang narrates the love story of Jai and Aditi to.

1.     EK BAGAL MEIN CHAND HOGA:

    it is tough to write lyrics for a movie of this nature.’bhoos’ is an extreme example of non trivial song writing for cinema.it plays within a limited scope and comes up with apt words.which is why this song as a piece of writing stands out.will never get the due.but not many have got balls to write stuff like this.

    the english adaptation is pathetic.this is what happens when characters like varun gobar attempts to venture into literature.my sincere advice to mr gobar and their likes is not to touch piyush mishra’s songs and give stupid adaptations and interpretations.varun gobar ji can do what he likes with his songs…no one cares….but he should not strive to explain songs like ik bagal mein and teri keh ke loonga…..when it is amply clear from his pathetic interpretation that he cnt understand it.i hope he sticks to doing what he is gud at which is sucking up to ak.Now…here is my interpretation of the ik bagal mein…song….all u kids pay attention:

    “ Ik bagal mein chaand(utopia) hoga ik bagal mein rotiyan(our bondage to the dictates of blind nature manifested in our hunger for food)”
    Here chaand and rotiyaan are contradictory.because the utopia can never be realized as long as we have to depend on food in order to survive….because the need to survive causes all kinds of inequities and thus undermines our efforts of ever reaching to the perfect state…..the chaand(utopia)
    But why do we need to realize an utopia?why do we need to reach to the moon?…..we need it because mankind is sick of struggle and trouble and wants peace…like in a sleep.This is borne out in the next line….we need to reach to the chaand so that we have: “Ik bagal mein neend(peace) hogi ik bagal mein loriyaan”
    But the above scenario is not possible as long as we r handcuffed by nature to food(which is the origin of all the lusts in man…the principal lust so to say)….but the poet in third line creates…out of anger an impossible image which is…” Hum chaand pe roti ki chaadar daal kar so jayenge”….out of frustration…and making use of poetic license he says…somehow I will reach the utopia(moon)even by being bound to the lust for rotiyaa…and I will sleep there…that is I will find peace…..
    But in the last line the poet acknowledges it is not possible….he may lie on the roti ki chadar on his moon…but the sleep will elude him…the peace will elude him because of the basic dichotomy of man ever realizing a perfect world(moon) as long as he is dependent on food(rotiyaan)…so he says…

    Aur neend se keh denge lori kal sunaane aayenge(sleep will elude us)

        btw i dont like the idea of subtitling songs,especially for kashyap’s films.becoz ek toh the songs play in the background when a lot of action is happening on screen,so it will distract the audience.
        secondly,it is generally a difficult task to translate a poem(the task becomes more difficult when the person translating it has not got the feel for poetry in english)…i mean the lines like..make u cry and fuck u dry….does nothing other than rhyme,and to make the audience read them is a crime.

    Now let us come to the “keh ke loong”a song.this gem by mishra ji is a rather simple affair,quite literal.so varun gobar ji and their likes had no difficulty in translating it.but the only place where the song posed a challenge….they conveniently skirted it.i dont know why this gobar baba is so blatantly defacing piyush mishra’s song.
    the line according to them goes….”.Khanjar se doodh gire yaan, ho katle aam teri keh ke loonga”……but is wrong…the real line is..as sung by sneha…..Khanjar se doodh gire AUR ho katle aam teri keh ke loonga.so there is a continuum…..because khanjar se doodh gire….ho katl e aam.
    now how do u explain this?gobar bhai chaged the lyrics to skirt the challenge…which is atrocious.
    now here i present my interpretation…kid’s pay attention:

    Khanjar se doodh gire aur ho katl e aam…..it means the bloodshed is necessary for survival in this violent world.and thus the poet replaces khanjar se khoon(which logically ought to have been the line) with doodh….so that it metaphorically means the bloodshed(khoon) is what fetches us food(milk) for survival in this violent,revenge driven world…..in a poetic way.

      Again, Keh ke Loonga was subtitled / adapted by me. Am glad you think it passes muster. Believe me I have no intentions of ‘defacing’ anyone’s work [although often that proves to be incredible fun… and you might have some skills there too].
      As for your interpretation of the line… there’s no doubt that the nuance you see [and feel I missed] works on merit. Thanks for pointing that out.

  11. @Sumit, Thanks for taking time out to write your interpretation of the lyrics. Very impressive. But please do understand that ‘varun gobar’ as you prefer to call him, has not written the translations of Ek Bagal and Keh Ke Loonga. Renuka and I have written them while Piyush Mishra explained us what he meant. The things is, art is relative and you can have multiple meanings and interpretations. Please understand that these are translations/subtitles meant for an audience who do not understand Hindi. If I had the liberty of ‘explaining’ them, I would write a 4 page thesis on Ek Bagal alone. Try writing single phrase meanings of lines and you’ll know what I mean.

    Sadly, we always try to find subtle meanings and metaphors basis our conscience, our upbringing and our over all self. While the artists seldom think so much while creating an art form. You have an interpretation which may even be greater than what Piyush Mishra thought of while writing. But why rob off an artists’ integrity or what the artist ‘really wants to say’? We stuck to what Piyush bhai, as we love to call him, wanted to say through these songs. Even the film’s narrative has a bearing on how the lyrics have been translated. And for your varun gobar comment, try writing lyrics like Varun Grover, then you’ll probably know his contribution to the film, and then may be you’ll rethink your comment.

      umm no way piyush mishra told you this meaning because keh ke loonga doesn’t mean this -_- Anurag kashyap has said this in all his interviews to say that “keh ke loonga” means “i will not stab you from behind” … “it means i will tell you before i kill you everday”

    the stupidity of the translators of the song “humni ke chori ke”…instead of infuriating me amazes me beyond measure.its a devotional song talking about the separation from the mother goddess…there is no father involved here.”baba”.. used here as a constant refrain is not talking about a father who has deserted!….baba is just a typical bihari refrain which signifies the intensity of emotion for the loss and has no separate meaning. like arey baba..haalat bahut kharab hai.here baba is used merely to intensify the kharab haalat.

    “Ki arre baba chhori dihala ghar-parivaar kahun banwa maayi gayili ho”…the foolish translators give a half translation here…..they say it means:”You have forsaken your town and family”,….but what about…”kahun banwa maayi gaylii ho?” it means kahun(which) banwa(comes from van in hindi which means forest) maayi(mother) gayli(went) ho…to which obscure woods has the mother gone….deserting our ghar parivaar?.thats the meaning fools!

    again,”Gaunwaan ke logawa, kehu…kehu se na bolein”…look at the funtoosh way this line has been translated……”The little one refuses to speak to anyone”,…hahahahaha…. were the translators high on something or what?and these ppl have been asked to provide subtitle?…gaunwaan(gaon..village) ke logawa(..ppl) means the village folks.the village folks r not speaking to each other….. is the meaning here.
    and there is no need to constantly use the refrain father in the translation…for baba means something else…as i have already explained.
    my god..where to begin?the whole translation is a mess.i can only say shame on u india…if that is the grasp of ur native languages.

  20. subtitling/translation is a tough job. when it comes to lyrics of geniuses like mishra and gulzar sb. it becomes even more difficult. their imagination and some words cannot be taken to any other language. nothing can do justice to the feeling in ik bagal mein is in its original form. while what renuka has done can be done in several other ways sicne its an open territory, she still has done a decent job. if the film’s subtitling was done by her, it was pretty good.
    calling varun GOBAR is totally unfair. i believe he was pretty impressive in the lyrics. while keeping bihaar alive and still delivering lines like TERAY PURKHAY JIYE ANDHERA AUR TU NE JANA UJALA, TANI TAAN KHENCH KE TAAN SEN KEHLAWA RE BHAIYYA, BADLAY RUPAYYA KE DE NA CHAWANNIYA is a good job.
    overall, good work guys. looking forward to hearing more.

    I saw both movies…I am really in love with Ik bagal…I have heard those last line many times and although your interpretation is quite nice…I would interprete them little differently.
