Selection: NFDC Film Bazaar Co-Production Market

The official selection of projects for National Film Development Corporation’s Film Bazaar Co-Production Market 2018 has been announced. This year, 20 projects have been selected to participate in the Market. After the success of Open Pitch in previous editions, this year again the selected filmmakers will be pitching their projects to a curated audience of national and international producers, financiers and sales agents.

The selected projects for 2018 are –
A Home Far Away | English, Spanish | India, France, USA
Director: Mohsen Makhmalbaf
Mohsen Makhmalbaf is known as one of the most influential filmmakers and founders of the new wave of Iranian cinema in the world. His films like Salam Cinema, A Moment of Innocence, Gabbeh, Kandahar and The President have been widely well received across the globe and have brought him over 50 international awards from the prestigious film festivals like Cannes Film Festival and Venice International Film Festival.
Producer: Sanjay Bhattacharjee, Sitting Duck Pictures
Sanjay Bhattacharjee is a UCLA alumni with 20 years’ production experience and has been a producer on projects like Frozen (Toronto International Film Festival, 2007), Manorama Six Feet Under and Amu (Berlinale Forum and FIPRESCI Critics’ Award, 2005). Sanjay is currently producing an adaptation of Paul Theroux’s novel The Elephanta Suite, co-written by Sooni Taraporevala, starring Brendan Fraser, in partnership with Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Producer: Mauktik Kulkarni, Mauktik Productions Pvt Ltd
Mauktik Kulkarni has more than 10 years of experience in fund-raising and project management. He has co-produced and executive produced Riding On A Sunbeam, a unique travel film directed by Brahmanand Singh and edited by Irene Dhar Malik, both national award winners. The film A Home Far Away is based on his solo, 8000 km bike trip in South America and the memoir A Ghost of Che authored by him.

Since 2003, Charlotte Uzu has been developing international films for Les Films d’Ici and structures financing with co-producers worldwide. Her filmography as a producer includes projects like- Waltz with Bashir (Ari Folman), Aurélie Dupont (Cédric Klapisch), Louis XV, The Black Sun (Thierry Binisti), An Opera Season (Richard Copans), Marilyn, Last Sessions (Patrick Jeudy), Clint Eastwood, A Life in Film (Michel Henry Wilson), Cerro Bayo (Victoria Galardi), Operation Libertad (Nicolas Wadimoff) and 3000 Nights (Mai Masri)

A New Prophet | Bengali, English | Bangladesh, USA
Director: Rezwan Shahriar Sumit
Sumit’s first docudrama City Life, earned him a place at the Berlinale Talents 2008 as an up-and-coming director. His short films have premiered at Copenhagen International Children’s Film Festival, Sarasota and New York Film Festival; and have been acquired by MUBI, VPRO, ASPiRE TV for worldwide distribution. Sumit’s first feature The Salt in Our Waters was awarded Bangladesh’s National Film Grant, France’s CNC and a writing grant by Spike Lee Film Production. He is also a Cannes-IEFTA Global Film Expression alumni. A New Prophet was awarded with the Sloan Foundation Production Grant in 2017.

Lilian Mehrel is a writer, director, and multimedia artist. Her work in immersive storytelling has premiered at Tribeca’s Interactive Playground, Google Daydream: Immersive Films Program and at the Tribeca Immigration Co/Lab: AR narrative exhibit in 2016. She is also a Google Tilt Brush artist. Lillian is also the recipient of awards like IFP Marcie Bloom Fellowship 2016-17, Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans in 2013, Sloan Foundation (The Loneliest, 2017), Nancy Malone Directing Award, 2015 and Kodak Student Film Award nomination.

Amar Colony | Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali | India
Director & Producer: Siddharth Chauhan, Secret Corridor Pictures
Siddharth is an independent filmmaker from Shimla. He founded Secret Corridor Pictures with the aim of working with the local talent in his home town Shimla. He has won the Satyajit Ray Award at London Indian Film Festival for his short film Papa in 2017. His latest short film Pashi premiered at Rhode Island Film Festival and was recently reviewed by Indie Shorts Magazine as the Best Indian Short Film of 2018.

Bend in the Coffin | Sinhalese | Sri Lanka
Director: Ilango Ramanathan
Ilango’s short film Silent Tears has traveled to 27 International Festivals and won 19 Awards and was screened at Locarno Open Doors 2017. A graduate from the Rockport College USA, he has participated in Asian Film Academy and Berlinale Talents. He has directed several social awareness commercials for child abuse, autism, and heart and cancer awareness for organizations like UNICEF. His debut feature Scent of a Dead Body is currently under production.
Producer: Hiranya Perera, Silent Frames Productions (Pvt) Ltd
Hiranya started out as the producer of Good Morning Sri Lanka – MTV. As the youngest woman director-producer, she has directed TV commercials for Stein Studios, while also taking care of the end-to-end production. She started own production house, Silent Frames Productions where she produced her first short film, Silent Tears directed by Ilango Ramanathan. She continues to produce TV commercials and films in Sri Lanka. Her first feature project Scent of a Dead Body is currently under production.

Bichal Sal (Rapture) | Garo | India, China
Director: Dominic Sangma
A graduate from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India his diploma film titled Rong’Kuchak (Echoes) won the National Student Film Award for Best Short Film in 2014 and Special Mention in Ca ‘Foscari Short Film Festival, Venice 2015. His debut feature film MA•AMA, an Indo-China Production was presented at the Film Bazaar Work-in-Progress Lab 2017 and will premiere at the International Competition section of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2018.
Producer: Jiangshang Xu, Anna Films
Jianshang Xu graduated from the Directing Department of Beijing Film Academy, China. Her Diploma short film Void had its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival 2018. MA•AMA was her first international co-production feature with Indian director Dominic Sangma. Rapture is her second feature film.
Currently, she is pursuing course in producing at Busan Asian Film School, Korea.

Fairy Flower Miles | Hindi, Bhojpuri | India
Director: Balaka Ghosh
Balaka Ghosh is a filmmaker based in Kolkata, India. Her film The Vehicle with The Soul Of A Man has traveled to 30 international film festivals. Her documentary Footprints in the Desert, co-produced by NHK Japan and funded by AND-DMZ fund, premiered at Busan International Film Festival 2014. Two of her fiction scripts have been awarded in Asia Pacific Screen Lab, Australia (2014) & Asian Cinema Fund, Korea (The Fog Catchers, 2017). In the past, her projects have received funding from IDFA, AND-DMZ Fund, Doordarshan, IDFA-Bertha fund, Films Division, IGNCA(GoI), NHK Japan, Banff Mountain Culture, and Al Jazeera.
Producer: Kumud Ranjan, Next Story Communication Pvt. Ltd
Kumud Ranjan has been a producer and cinematographer of feature length films produced by NHK Japan, IDFA Bertha fund, Al Jazeera English, BANFF Mountain Culture, BIFF AND-DMZ. In the past, he has worked as a video journalist with multinational television channels. He is producing an experimental short fiction Love in The Time of Acid Rains which was pitched at The Palace Film Festival, Bulgaria.

Girls Will Be Girls | English, Hindi | India
Director: Shuchi Talati
Shuchi Talati is an alumnus of the American Film Institute and recipient of the Women in Film endowment. She just finished story producing the first season of WYATT CENAC’S Problem Areas for HBO on policing in America. Her tenth short film, Mae and Ash was an official selection at the Atlanta Film Festival, Palm Beach International Film Festival, and WAMM Film Festival. She is collaborating with an all-woman team to develop her first feature film, Girls Will Be Girls.

Richa Chadha is an actor, writer, and producer known for her work in films like Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur (premiered at Director’s Fortnight, Cannes 2012 and won her a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress), the anthology film Words with Gods by Mira Nair (Venice International Film Festival, 2014) and Masaan, an Indo-French Co-Production (Un Certain Regard – Cannes Film Festival, 2015). Richa produced her first short film Khoon Aali Chithi in 2017. She is committed to developing content that challenges in the male gaze in media production.

Hangdan | Assamese | India
Director & Producer: Jaicheng Jai Dohutia, Mayamara Production
Jaicheng Dohutia is a filmmaker from Assam, India. He directed and produced his debut feature film Haanduk (The Hidden Corner) which was part of Film Bazaar Work-In-Progress Lab, 2015. The film went on to bag the Jury Grand Prize at 18th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2016, Best Feature Film in Moran at 64th National Film Awards 2016, NETPAC Award for Best Asian film at All Light International Film Festival 2017 and Best Film at 7th Assam State Awards 2018.

Hinterland | Hindi | India
Director: Rahil Ahmed Patel
Rahil Ahmed Patel has been the second unit director on Abhishek Chaubey’s upcoming film Sonchiriya and Zoya Akhtar’s Amazon Prime Series Made in Heaven. Having worked with Abhishek Chaubey and Vishal Bhardwaj, his credits as a 1st Assistant Director include films like Dedh Ishqiya (2014), Udta Punjab (2016), Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola (2013) and 7 Khoon Maaf (2011).

Abhishek Chaubey is the co-founder of MacGuffin pictures that has recently produced A Death in the Gunj (2017) and the upcoming Sonchiriya. As a director, he has helmed critically acclaimed films like Udta Punjab (2016), Dedh Ishqiya (2014) and Ishqiya (2010). He was also the creative producer on the film Ek thi Daayan (2013). Abhishek’s writing repertoire includes such acclaimed films as Omkara (2006) for which he won Filmfare Award for Best Dialogue Writing, and Kaminey (2009).

Co-founder of MacGuffin Pictures, Honey Trehan is the co-producer of A Death in The Gunj (2017) and upcoming Sonchiriya. He was the creative producer on Talvar (2015) and associate creative producer on Chittagong (2013). His filmography includes such films as Maqbool (2003), Omkara (2006), 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), Talvar (2015) and Udta Punjab (2016).

In the Belly of a Tiger | Hindi | India
Director: Jatla Siddartha
Jatla Siddartha is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India and the Asian Film Academy, Busan. His first short film, The Artist premiered at Busan International Film Festival in 2012 while his debut feature Love and Shukla had its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival 2017. The film traveled to more than 30 festivals worldwide and won NETPAC Award at Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. He has also been awarded Busan Script Development Fund (Asian Cinema Fund) 2018 for In The Belly of a Tiger.
Producer: Amanda Mooney, Momo Films
Amanda Mooney is an associate creative director and filmmaker based in Mumbai. Her recent work includes Love and Shukla (NETPAC Award, World premiere, Busan International Film Festival), Belongings (2017), and In the Belly of Tiger (Busan Script Development Fund). She is also currently producing and directing a documentary on the DACA generation in post-Trump America, Hermosa Puerta Grande.

Kho – Kho | Malayalam | India
Director & Producer: Rahul Riji Nair, First Print Studios
Rahul Riji Nair founded the production company First Print Studios under which he made his debut feature film as a writer-director, Ottamuri Velicham (Light in the Room). The film won him several state awards including Best Feature Film in 2017 and World Premiered at the New York Indian Film Festival 2018. The film also won the German Star of India Award for Best Feature film at the Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart, 2018. The film also premiered at the India Gold Competition Section of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2018.

Little Thomas | Hindi, Konkani, English | India
Director: Kaushal Oza
Kaushal Oza is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India, and has won National Awards for his two short films, Vaishnav Jan Toh and Afterglow. Afterglow was also India’s Official entry to the South-Asian Film Festival of SAARC, where it won the Special Jury Award in 2013. Little Thomas was developed at the NFDC Children’s Screenwriters’ Lab 2016.
Producer: Shaan Vyas, Awe Studios
Shaan Vyas worked as a producer with Sikhya Entertainment and successfully produced films like The Lunchbox, Masaan, Zubaan and Dear Dad, during his tenure there. He recently produced the BFI partnered Indo-British horror Darkness Visible and Aasha the Street Dog with Cinestaan International. His new production outfit Awe Studios, aims to empower filmmakers with a unique voice and vision and take them to the world.

Lonak (The Dark Year) | Hindi | India
Director & Producer: Sange Dorjee Thongdok, TNT Films
Sange Dorjee is an alumnus of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institution. His debut feature film Crossing Bridges was the first feature film in Sherdukpen dialect of Arunanchal Pradesh. It also won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Sherdukpen in 2013. In 2016, he was selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus. Under his production banner TNT Films, he directed and shot The Nest, a documentary film which won the Best North-East Film award at Woodpecker International film festival. The Nest also won Best Film and Cinematography awards at the 5th National Documentary and Short Film Festival. His second feature film River Song has been produced by Jar Pictures, Mumbai.

Reshma Shera | Hindi | India
Director: Megha Ramaswamy
Megha Ramaswamy’s two films, Newborns (2014) and Bunny (2015), both had their world premieres at TIFF, and traveled to various Indian and international festivals. Her short film The Last Music Store won the audience Best Documentary award at South Asian International Film Festival, USA. She also has her own production banner, Missfit Films. Megha also co-hosts CAUSE EFFECT, a platform that produces cause related content and outreach programs and is a beneficiary of the prestigious Chicken & Egg grant for women filmmakers.
Currently, she is working on the final stages of her debut feature set in her own whimsical version of Mumbai – The Odds.

Alan started his journey assisting top cinematographers in the country but soon identified his passion for production. He has line produced critically acclaimed independent films like Frozen (TIFF 2007), Ocean of an Old Man (Busan 2008), Autumn (TIFF 2010), Peepli Live (Sundance 2010) and Patang (Berlinale ’11). He cofounded JAR Pictures, a versatile production company steadily gaining hold in the Indian film industry and produced successful films like Gangs of Wasseypur (Director’s Fortnight, Cannes 2012), Liar’s Dice (Sundance 2014 and India’s official entry to Oscars 2014) and Killa (Berlinale 2014 – Crystal Bear Winner) while helming the line production of cinematic achievements like Dangal and Talvar as an Executive Producer.

Director & Producer: Karan Talwar
Karan Talwar is the co-founder of Harkat Studios, an arts studio based in Mumbai and Berlin. He has directed many short documentary stories and experimental films as part of his work at Harkat. Karan has also curated exhibits like The Museum of Ordinary Objects and In the mood for Melancholia, where he worked with material memory and experiential storytelling. With a multi-disciplinary background, he matches ideas with mediums and his work ranges from conceptual installations to filmmaking. He has assisted filmmaker Prakash Jha on projects like Raajneeti, Satyagraha, Chakravyuh, and Aarakshan.

Michaela Strobel is a producer, journalist, filmmaker, marketing consultant and co-founder of Harkat Studios. She has worked as an international correspondent for ZDF in Brussels and concept developer and strategist for public and private TV channels. She has produced a variety of original and marketing content for companies like Netflix, Fox Star Studios and Disney.

Director: Vandana Kataria
Vandana Kataria graduated from the National Institute of Design and went on to direct numerous commercials, music videos, and corporate films. She has worked as a Production Designer on feature films like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015), Shanghai (2012), and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008). In 2016, she was selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus. She made her debut as a writer and director with Noblemen produced by Saregama India Limited. Presently, she is engaged in the pre-production of her next film with RSVP.

Tito-Mitho (Bitter-Sweet) | Nepali | India
Director: Tribeny Rai
Tribeny Rai is an independent filmmaker from Sikkim, India. An alumnus of Satyajit Ray film and Television Institute, she has worked with Prasar Bharati, Doordarshan Kendra Gangtok on a series of documentary films based on women empowerment. Her debut short film Yathawat (As It Is) premiered at the International Film Festival of India 2015 (Goa), Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF), and Kolkata International
Film Festival. Her experimental film For Children Only won the Best Sound Design award at National Student Film Awards 2015. In 2015, she was selected as a film fellow for Dharamshala International Film Festival Fellowship Programme and in 2016, she attended the 8th VGIK International Summer School held in Russia as the only Indian representative.
Producer- Geeta Rai, Dalley Khorsani Productions
Geeta Rai is a school teacher by profession and a film enthusiast by choice. She is actively involved in social works aiming to empower women of villages financially and socially. She has produced three films namely-Memory of A Heart (screened at 13th IAWRT Asian Women Film Festival under the Artists’ Film and Video section), Daughter, and Sikkim Soccer Girls all directed by Tribeny Rai.

Three Mothers | Tamil, French | India, France
Director: Chezhiyan Ramalingam
Chezhiyan Ramalingam is a filmmaker and cinematographer who primarily works in the Tamil film industry. He won the Best Cinematography Award at London International Filmmaker Festival (LIFF) for the film Vagabond (Paradesi) in 2013. His debut feature film To Let won Best Indian film award in Kolkata International film festival and National Award for Best Regional film. He is also an acclaimed author of a series of books about cinema titled Ulaga Cinema (World Cinema) in Tamil.
Producer: Prema Chezhiyan, La cinema
Prema Chezhiyan is a professional music scholar, teacher and book publisher. After completing her higher studies from Trinity London Music College, she published ten volumes of books about Western Music theory in Tamil. The books got best publisher award from Ananda Vikatan 2011. Her first movie as a producer, To Let got her the National Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

Ullozhukku (Undercurrent) | Malayalam | India
Director: Christo Tomy
Christo Tomy, an alumnus of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India is an independent filmmaker from Kerala, India. His short films Kamuki (Sweetheart) and Kanyaka (Virgin) won him National Awards for Best Direction (2016) and Best Debut Film (2014), respectively. He was selected for the 9th International Students Film Camp in Serbia, and the documentary he made there titled Apart, was listed as the second best work in the TV Story category at INTERFER – International Media Festival, Apatin, Serbia (2015). Undercurrent was also a part of the NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab, 2017.
Producer: Geetu Mohandas, Collective Phase One
Geetu Mohandas’s debut short film Are you listening? premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2010. Her debut feature film Liar’s Dice, premiered in competition section at the Sundance Film Festival 2013 and was India’s official entry for the 87th Academy Awards. The film also won Best Actress and Best Cinematography awards at the 61st National Awards. She is an integral part of Collective Phase One, which was formed to create an alternative path in filmmaking. They have produced many acclaimed films like Rajeev Ravi’s Njan Steve Lopez, Kamal K. M’s I.D., among many others.

VR Peon | Hindi | India
Director: Kabir Mehta
Kabir Mehta’s first film a docu-fiction short film Sadhu In Bombay had its North American premiere at Slamdance Film Festival and won the award for Best Narrative Film at the 55th Ann Arbor Film Festival. His first feature length project BUDDHA.mov, a docu-fiction hybrid, had its world premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2017 in the First Features Competition and will have its Indian premiere at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2018.
Producer: Homi Adajania, Maddock Films
Homi Adajania is a writer and Indian film director of critically and commercially successful films like Being Cyrus, Cocktail, and Finding Fanny. Maddock Films, founded by Dinesh Vijan, is one of the prominent production houses in the Indian Film Industry with a wide slate of films including Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail, Badlapur, Hindi Medium and Stree recently. The core belief at Maddock is to make films which are both heavy on content as well as commercially viable and entertaining films. With an interesting slate of upcoming films, Maddock Films plans to continue creating memorable and exciting films for Indian & International audiences.

The National Film Development Corporation has announced the Call for Entries for the 12th Year of Film Bazaar Co-Production Market.

Full length fiction feature projects with South Asian themes are invited to apply.

The Deadline for submissions is September 13th, 2018. Extended Deadline is September 18th 2018. The deadline has been extended to September 30th 2018.

The Market will be held between 20-24th November, 2018 at Film Bazaar, Goa.

The Co-Production Market presents a list of curated projects to the national and international film professionals attending Film Bazaar. The Market kicks off with Open Pitch where participants present their projects through Video Pitches to an audience of investors, producers and financiers. The four days of the market are earmarked for one on one meetings specially scheduled for each project.

Over the years, the dedicated team has honed its skills for matching projects with the right delegates. Dedicated online and print catalogues consisting of all project details are available for Film Bazaar attendees interested in Co Production Market projects. The Co-Production Market also conducts an orientation session to familiarize participants to Open Pitch as well as the working of the Co-Production Market and Film Bazaar.

Call for Entries – NFDC Film Bazaar 2018’s Viewing Room & Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab

NFDC Film Bazaar 2018 is calling for entries for the Viewing Room and the Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab.

– Film Bazaar will be held from November 20-24, 2018 at the Goa Marriott Resort.

– The Early Bird Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2018, which will offer a discount on the submission fees. The last date for submission of completed applications is September 14th 2018.

WIP Lab

– Submissions are invited for the WIP Fiction lab.

– Up to five projects in their rough-cut stage will be selected to be presented to a panel of international film experts for their feedback.

– Feature-length fiction films of any genre in the rough-cut stage are invited to apply to the WIP lab.

Viewing Room

The Viewing Room will present films seeking finishing funds, world sales, distribution partners and film festivals to investors, world sales agents and film festival programmers attending the film bazaar. Here, films are viewed on individual computer terminals in private booths via a specially designed software which allows the users to contact the director or producer of the film via email.

– Films (fiction/documentary) of all genres and lengths in rough or final cut are invited to apply to the Viewing Room.

– Feature length films in the rough cut are eligible to apply to both WIP lab and Viewing Room.

– Short films can also be submitted to the Viewing Room, which will be showcased in a category called Short Films.

The films that were a part of the previous Work-in-Progress Labs at Film Bazaar have had their world premieres at leading international film festivals and some have even gone on to enjoy a successful theatrical run. The National Film Development Corporation officially announces Call for Entries for the 11th Year of Filmbazaar Co-Production Market.

The Co-Production Market presents a list of curated projects to the national and international film professionals attending Film Bazaar.

– The Market kicks off with Open Pitch where participants present their projects through Video Pitches to an audience of investors, producers and financiers.

– The four days of the market are earmarked for one on one meetings specially scheduled for each project.

Over the years, the dedicated team has honed its skills for matching projects with the right delegates. Dedicated online and print catalogues consisting of all project details are available for Film Bazaar attendees interested in Co-Production Market projects. The market also conducts an orientation session to familiarize participants to Open Pitch as well as the working of the Co-Production Market and Film Bazaar.

– Full length fiction feature projects with South Asian themes are invited to apply.

NFDC Film Bazaar Recommends 32 Films In The “Viewing Room”

NFDC Screenwriter's Lab

The 10th edition of NFDC Film Bazaar will run from November 20th to 24th 2016. It’s  a development bazaar created exclusively to encourage collaboration between the international and South Asian film fraternity. The Bazaar is focused on discovering, supporting and showcasing South Asian content and talent, in the realm of filmmaking, production and distribution.

 – The Film Bazaar Recommends (FBR) 32 films out of 164-feature length films (131 fiction features and 33 documentaries) submitted to the Viewing Room this year.

– It includes 5 feature length documentaries and 27 fiction features in 14 languages (including Hindi, English, Malayalam, Arabic, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Nepali, Sinhalese, Tamil, Assamese, Dari, Pahadi and Japanese).

– This year Viewing Room has received films in 6 rare language films (including 3 rare language FBR Films) in Film Bazaar. The 6 rare languages are The Gold-Laden Sheep & The Sacred Mountain in Pahadi, The Bioscopewala in Dari, Sonar Baran Pakhi in Rajbangshi, Dongar Dei Paribi Naahin in Kui, Kho Ki Pa Lu in Chokri, and River Song in Shertukpen. There is also a silent film, The East Wind submitted to the Viewing Room.

– The 32 FBR filmmakers will pitch their trailers at the ‘Investor’s Pitch’ held on 22nd and 23rd November.

– The films submitted in Viewing Room are either just completed or still in progress, to be completed in 2017. Almost a 100 films presented at the Viewing Room are awaiting a world premiere and 60 are still in progress. Many of these films are looking for world sales agents, film festivals, buyers and distributors and also gap financing through co-producers and investors.

 

Viewing Room (VR) – 202 films in 19 different languages 

– 202 films in 19 different languages are presented in the Viewing Room reflecting the exciting diversity of South Asia as a cinema-producing region. In 2015, a total of 156 films were presented in the ‘Viewing Room’.

– 202 films in VR include 164-feature length films (131 fiction features and 33 documentaries) and 38 short films.

– The film bazaar is also giving a platform to a record number of over a 100 debut directors, thus is the largest showcase of fresh budding directorial talent from South Asia.

– There are also 38 short films, with duration under 60 minutes, which are available to watch in the Viewing Room.

NFDC Announces Selection For Film Bazaar Co-Production Market, 2016

NFDC Screenwriter's LabFilm Bazaar, 2016 has announced its official selection of projects for its main segment, the Co-Production Market. The event will be held between 20 – 24 November in Goa. This year, 18 projects have been selected to participate in the Market.

The Co-Production Market will kickstart with Open Pitch where selected filmmakers will pitch their projects to a curated audience of national and international producers, financiers and sales agents.

The selected projects for 2016 are:

  • Apodartho (A Foolish Man) | Bengali | Bangladesh 


Director: Abu Shahed Emon’s debut feature Jalal’s Story travelled to more than twenty international film festivals. In 2015, the film was nominated as Bangladesh’s entry for Best Foreign-Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. A Foolish Man is his second feature.

Producer: Mostafa Sarwar Farooki, Chabial

Founded by Mostafa Sarwar Farooki, Chabial is a production house which has produced the fiction features Television (2012) and Ant Story (2013), both of which have travelled to several prestigious in- ternational film festivals and won awards. At present, Chabial is producing No Land’s Man which won the Motion Picture Association-Asia Pacific Screen Awards Academy Film Fund 2014 and the Most Promising Project Award at Film Bazaar 2014.

  • Bhosle | Hindi | India
 

Director: Devashish Makhija is a Mumbai-based filmmaker who has written Bhoomi (directed by Avik Mukherjee), Doga (directed by Anurag Kashyap) and Oonga (directed by himself). Also to his credit are several acclaimed short films like Rahim Murge Pe Mat Ro, El’ayichi, Agli Baar, Absent and Taandav.

Piiyush Singh is an investor and consultant for Muvizz.com – a globally funded online video streaming portal for Indie cinema. Before venturing out on his own, Piiyush worked as a managing partner with companies like Friends Media Group and Rudra Enterprises.

Director: Eisha Marjara is a Canadian filmmaker whose provocative docudrama Desperately Seeking Helen received the Critic’s Choice Award at the Locarno Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the München

Dokumentarfilm Festival in 2000. Eisha first drew attention with The Incredible Shrinking Woman in 1994, which she wrote, shot and directed. She is currently in production on her first feature, Venus.

Producer: Joe Balass, Compass Productions inc.

Joe Balass has produced and directed a number of award-winning films like Baghdad Twist (2007), JOY! (2012) and The Length of the Alphabet (2013), which screened at festivals around the world. In 2014, both the Toronto Jewish Film Festival and the Cinémathèque québécoise honoured him with a retrospective.

  • Dastaan-e-Awaargi | Hindi | India


Director: Ankit Kothari has worked as a graphic designer, script supervisor, researcher and assistant director on the critically acclaimed films Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Love Sex aur Dhokha and Shanghai. His script Dastaan-E- Awaargi was part of the NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab in 2015.

Producer: Priya Sreedharan, Open Air Films

Priya’s first film as an executive producer was Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, released in 2008. Her second film Love Sex aur Dhokha was the first commercially successful, breakthrough digital film in India. She was also a producer of Shanghai, released in 2012. Her fourth film, tentatively titled Three Storeys is ready for release in early 2017.

  • Ink | Bengali, Hindi | India


Director: Pratim Gupta’s debut film, Paanch Adhyay (Afterglow) premiered at the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF), New York and won the New Voice in Indian Cinema at MAMI. Ink was part of the Mumbai Mantra Sundance Screenwriters Lab 2013. Pratim’s work also includes the experimental film X: Past is Present (SAIFF 2014 & IFFK) and Shaheb Bibi Golaam (New York International Film Festival 2016 premiere).

Friends Communication, formed in 2012, has produced films like Take One, Abby Sen and Natoker Moto (2015) which was part of the International Competition section at the International Film Festival of India. In 2013, they produced Rupkatha Noy which starred Soumitra Chatterjee and Radhika Apte.

  • Insha’allah | Malayalam, Hindi | India


Director: Geetu Mohandas’ first feature Liar’s Dice (Sundance Film Festival 2014) received the Hubert Bals Fund for development and won six major international awards, and two National Awards in India. It was also India’s official submission for the Best Foreign Film for the 87th Academy Awards. Geetu’s earlier work includes the short film Are You Listening? which premiered at International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) 2010.

In 2011, Ajay set up Jar Pictures in partnership with Alan McAlex. From the critically acclaimed Liar’s Dice to the mainstream Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, the company’s filmography boasts of a variety of genres. In 2014, Jar Pictures production Killa won the Crystal Bear at Berlinale and a National Award in India. Their latest release, The New Classmate, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival.

  • Jhyalincha (Season of Dragonflies) | Nepali | Nepal


Director: Abinash Bikram Shah is a filmmaker based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Abinash’s short films have traveled to film festivals worldwide including Berlin, Venice and Busan, winning a host of awards. An alumnus of Asian Film Academy 2008 and Berlinale Talent Campus 2010, Abinash works as the Pro- gramming Director at Ekadeshma International Short Film Festival.

Producer: Ram Krishna Pokharel, Icefall Productions

Over the past several years Ram has developed and produced shorts and feature films like L’ascension, Nomber One, Everest – Summit of the Gods that have appeared in many national and international film festivals. He is currently working on Jhyalincha (Season of Dragonflies).

  • Joseph Ki Macha (Joseph’s Son) | Manipuri | India


Director: Haobam Paban Kumar is a Manipuri filmmaker whose debut fiction feature Loktak Lairambee (Lady of the Lake) was selected for world premiere at Busan International Film Festival 2016. The film was part of the Film Bazaar Work-in-Progress Lab 2015. Paban’s documentary Floating Life was nominated for the Leipziger Ring award at the 58th DOK Leipzig 2015. His films have screened in various festivals and have won awards including the FIPRESCI prize at Mumbai International Film Festival 2006.

Producer: Oli Pictures

Oli Pictures was established in the summer of 2005 in Imphal, Manipur. The company has notable productions to its credit namely – Kangla, Orchids and Manipur, A Cry in the Dark, Mr. India among others. Oli Pictures’ latest production is the fiction feature film, Loktak Lairambee (Lady of the Lake).

  • Kabuliwala (Man From Kabul) | Animation | Hindi | India


Director: Soumitra Ranade, an alumnus of Sir J.J.School of Arts and Film and Television Institute of India, has written, directed and produced children’s feature films Jajantaram Mamantaram and Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa, animated TV serials Karadi Tales and Bandbudh Aur Budbak. Soumitra’s latest live-action feature Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai? is slated for release soon. He is the Founder/ Chairman of Paperboat Design Studios Pvt. Ltd. and also the Co-founder/ Chairman of School of DAAF (Design Art Animation Film).

Sunil Doshi has worked in production, acquisition and distribution of different kinds of films and pro- gramming of the Indian films at various film festivals. Handmade Films has previously produced San- tosh Sivan’s Navarasa (Nine Emotions), Rajat Kapoor’s Mixed Doubles, Sagar Ballary’s Bheja Fry, Rupali Guha’s Aamras, Bela Negi’s Daayen ya Baayen, Jaideep Varma’s Hulla, Jaybarto Chatterji’s Love Songs, Maneej Premnath’s The Waiting Room and Sharat Katariya’s 10ml Love. Handmade Films is current- ly involved in the post-production of Bioscopwala, a live action feature-film based on Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Kabuliwala’.

  • Nonajoler Kabbo (The Salt in Our Waters) | Bengali | Bangladesh


Director: Rezwan Shahriar Sumit’s docudrama City Life was selected at Berlinale Talents 2008. His shorts have traveled to Copenhagen International Children’s Film Festival, among other festivals in the US. His films have been acquired by MUBI, VPRO for worldwide distribution. Rezwan attended the Graduate Film Program of NYU Tisch School of the Arts as a Tisch Fellow.

Producer: Gigi Dement, Laboratory NYC

Gigi has produced several award-winning films, including God of Love (winner of the 2011 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short), Bastards of Young, and the critically acclaimed film Babygirl that pre- miered at the Tribeca Film Festival 2012.

Director: Ravi Shankar has been a multimedia and animation pioneer in India since he directed the first interactive CD-ROM in India in 1995. He is an HR professional and works in Infosys as a Senior HR Solutions Designer. Ravi has over 20 years of experience in directing and managing large pro- grammes/productions.

Producer: Sindhu SK, Puppetica Media

Sindhu SK managed the largest crowd-funding campaign in India through a platform last year and was instrumental in the success of the campaign. She has previously worked with her husband Ravi on several creative projects.

Director: An alumnus of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Bishnu Dev Halder’s documentary, Bagher Bachcha, won the National Film Award in 2007. It was also the Opening Film of International Film Festival of India 2007. Selected for Talent Campus India in 2007, Bishnu was awarded the UK Environment Film Fellowship in 2010. Bishnu’s debut film, I Was Born in Delhi, was nominated at the prestigious IDFA in 2011.

Courtyard Entertainment’s award-winning body of work comprises of feature-length projects that have been co-produced in partnership with Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Japan Broadcasting Corporation and NHK among others. Directors: Rajdeep Paul and Sarmishtha Maiti are National Film Award winning filmmakers and alumni of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute. They have worked with Doordarshan, PSBT and Ministry of External Affairs, India, and PBS, US. Their debut fiction feature script The Biryani Seller was part of the Mumbai Mantra Cinerise Screenwriters Lab. The duo’s short fictions include 3 on a Bed, The Woman and the Man, Itvar. Their documentary At the Crossroads, Nondon Bagchi Life and Living won a National Award.

Mahesh Mathai founded Highlight Films in 1987 which became one of the most successful advertis- ing commercial companies in India. In 2000, he made the acclaimed feature film, Bhopal Express that opened the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival and won seven International Awards. In 2005, Mahesh directed the British film, Broken Thread. Highlight Films’ has also produced Mystic India in 2005, Outsourced in 2006, Aapa Akka and Manali Cream 2009 among others.

Director: Aboozar Amini’s graduation film Kabul Tehran Kabul (2010) won the Wildcard Award of the Dutch Film Fund. His film Angelus Novus (2015) premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and won various awards worldwide. His latest film Where is Kurdistan (2016) was commis- sioned by IFFR. His Afghan origin plays an important role in his work.

Jia Zhao is the founder/producer at Muyi Film (cultural/artistic documentary) and Silk Road Film Salon. Her recent works include projects with Frank Scheffer (The Perception, IFFR 2016, KNF award; Inner Landscape Holland Festival 2015), Yan Ting Yuen (Mr Hu and the Temple, in competition at IDFA 2015 and at NFF 2016), Aboozar Amini (Where is Kurdistan? IFFR 2016; Angelus Novus, IFFR 2015), Yang Yang (Steel Rose, 2016) and Laetitia Schoofs (Unbinding Feet).

Director: Leena Manimekalai is a Tamil poet and filmmaker who has made films like My Mirror is the Door, Goddesses, Sengadal (The Dead Sea) and White Van. Stories about Eco-feminism, Dalit women lives, plight of refugees and fishermen in the Palk Strait, and enforced disappearances in the back- ground of Tamil ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka form the core of her work.

Dream Warrior Pictures (DWP) was co-founded by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu in 2010. Saguni, their debut film, was a successful Tamil feature starring Karthi Sivakumar. As partner and co-producer at Studiogreen from 2006 to 2015, Prakash Babu and Prabhu have successfully produced 14 Tamil feature films. Recently, they produced the fiction feature Maya, which went on to become one of the most successful commercial releases in 2015.

Producer: Charlotte Most, Mostfilm AB

Charlotte Most set up her company Mostfilm in 2000. Attending EAVE 2010, established Charlotte as a producer in Europe. Her films have been screened at various festivals and venues throughout the world. Her productions have been acquired by Swedish National Television (SVT). Her Filmography (2012-2016) includes – Eggg, Swoon and The Girl King among others.

  • Tribhanga (Three Curve Bent) | English, Marathi | India


Director: Renuka Shahane has been an Indian actress for the last 29 years. She won the Best Director award for her debut directorial Marathi film Rita at the Star Screen Awards 2010 and the best screenplay award for Marathi films at the 8th Pune International Film Festival. Tribhanga was part of the Mumbai Mantra Sundance Screenwriter’s workshop in 2013.

Producer: Padachinnha Production

Renuka Shahane started Padachinnha Production in September 2015. Two Marathi short films – Saath- van (Mementos) & Aathvan (Memory) have been produced under this banner. Saathvan was officially selected for the Trinity International Film Festival in Detroit this year.

  • Wapsi (The Return) | Hindi | India


Director: Asad Hussain was one of the writers on Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He has also co-written Children of War, a film about Bangladesh’s war for independence. Asad has collaborated with internationally acclaimed directors Siddiq Barmak (Afghanistan) and Murali Nair (India). He has been awarded the prestigious MacDowell Fellowship for his writing. His screenplay, Wapsi was part of the NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab 2015.

Producer: Abbas Khan, Paandan Pictures

Paandan Pictures has been co-founded by Asad Hussain and Abbas Khan. Abbas has worked on Indian and international films, TVCs and Studio Projects since 2008. He has collaborated with directors like Ashim Ahluwalia, Murali Nair, Rob Cohen, Paula Van Der Oest and Sharat Katariya.

– Film Bazaar is a platform exclusively created to encourage collaboration between the international and South Asian film fraternities. The market aims at facilitating the sales of world cinema in the region. The 2015 market saw an attendance of 1102 delegates from 38 countries with a country delegation from Canada.

– The 10th Edition of Film Bazaar will be held from 20-24 November 2016 at the Marriott Resort in Goa, India.

NFDC Screenwriter's Lab

NFDC Film Bazaar 2016 is calling for entries for the Viewing Room and the Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab.

– Film Bazaar will be held from November 20-24, 2016 at the Goa Marriott Resort alongside the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2016.

– The Early Bird Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2016, which will offer a discount on the submission fees. The regular deadline is September 30th 2016.

WIP Lab

– Submissions are invited for the two WIP Labs – WIP Fiction and WIP Documentary.

– In each WIP Lab, up to five projects in their rough-cut stage will be selected to be presented to a panel of international film experts for their feedback.

– The WIP Documentary Lab will only consider creative feature length documentaries in the rough cut stage which are aimed at a theatrical release.

– Feature-length films of any genre in the rough-cut stage are invited to apply to the WIP lab.

Viewing Room

The Viewing Room will present films seeking finishing funds, world sales, distribution partners and film festivals to investors, world sales agents and film festival programmers attending the film bazaar. Here, films are viewed on individual computer terminals in private booths via a specially designed software which allows the users to contact the director or producer of the film via email.

– Films of all genres and lengths in rough or final cut are invited to apply to the Viewing Room.

– Feature length films in the rough cut are eligible to apply to both WIP lab and Viewing Room.

– The films that were a part of the previous Work-in-Progress Labs at Film Bazaar have had their world premieres at leading international film festivals and some have even gone on to enjoy a successful theatrical run. Six Scripts Selected For NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab 2016

writingNFDC India has selected six projects for the 10th Edition of NFDC Film Bazaar Screenwriters’ Lab.

The Screenwriters’ Lab is part of NFDC Labs’ ongoing initiative to develop original voices and stories from India. The selected participants work with mentors to explore their stories in one-on-one as well as group sessions and master classes. Aimed at domestic as well as international markets, the projects will be pitched to producers and investors in a specially designed session during Film Bazaar 2016. Like the last two years, this edition of the lab will continue its collaboration with Sarajevo International Film Festival.

– The selected projects include scripts in various regional languages, a Tamil script, Heart and Soul; two Malayalam scripts – Spirogyra and The Ward; a Bengali script, The Gift; a Punjabi script, Unresolved; and Hindi script, Time To Go.

Details of the scripts and writers –

1.  Heart and Soul (Tamil)

Hari Hara Sudhan is a Direction & Screenwriting student of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute. Before joining film school, Hari trained under Balu Mahendra in Chennai.

2.  Spirogyra (Malayalam)

Abhilash Vijayan is an emerging filmmaker whose short film Dwand (The Dual) and short documentary That Elephant From the Bridge have won several national and international awards, apart from travelling to several international festivals. Abhilash holds a post-graduate Diploma in Direction and Screenplay Writing from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

3.  The Gift (Bengali)

Tamal Sen studied Direction and Screenplay writing from the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata. His graduation film, Still Voices won the Special Prize at the 58th Columbus International Film & Video Festival USA, and won an Honourable Mention at the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival 2010, among many others.

4.  The Ward (Malayalam)

Kris Rajan has worked as an editor on two-time academy award nominee John Sayles’ latest feature, Go For Sisters. His short films have screened at numerous international film festivals. Kris has been a researcher, writer, and editor on numerous commissioned and independent feature documentaries. He studied Film Directing at New York University’s Film program, where he was awarded the sole “Technisphere Award” for outstanding creative achievement.

5.  Time To Go (Hindi)

Mansi Jain is a writer – director who has recently co-written and associate directed Moh Maya Money, a crime drama. Her short film Lunch Lady was in official selection at many major film festivals. 42nd and Bombay, her short film screenplay, was awarded the prestigious $10,000 grant by Panavision at Columbia University Film Festival 2015. Mansi has also assisted Rajat Kapoor on Ankhon Dekhi (Before My Eyes, 2013). Currently she is a thesis year MFA screenwriting-directing candidate at Columbia University.

6.  Unresolved (Punjabi)

Vikram Singh is a writer – director who has recently written and director a comedy feature for children.He has worked with India’s largest advertising agencies, producing and directing commercials for some of India’s biggest brands. In 2001 Vikram moved to Mumbai and joined UTV in their ADs division as a director of commercials and corporate videos. Since then he has written several scripts on spec.

The mentors of the script labs are…

  1. Antoine Le Bos

Antoine Le Bos is a French screenwriter and script-consultant, with more than 25 feature scripts delivered under contract as a writer or co-writer, and the experience of over a hundred feature projects followed as a consultant. He has worked as a consultant for the Moulin d’Andé (CECI, France), tutoring their 2005, 2006 and 2007 rewriting sessions, as well as European Short Pitch 2007 to 2010 sessions, and taught screenwriting at Brest University. He won the Gan Foundation Prize as a writer in 2005 for a feature film project called La Vague Noire.

Antoine has been a tutor and consultant for Script&Pitch Workshops and Torino Film Lab since 2007, as well as for Interchange in 2009, 2010, 2011. In 2007, Antoine Le Bos became Artistic Director of Le Groupe Ouest, European centre for film creation in Brittany (France), and recently co-created the Cross-Channel Film Lab between France and Great Britain.

2. Urmi Juvekar

Urmi Juvekar was actively involved in theatre since her early years. She then moved on to working in a television production house to make non-fiction programmes while writing her first feature film, Darmiyaan, which released in 1998. Since then, she has written seven films including Oye Lucky, Lucky Oyeand I AM – both winners of the National Award for Best Film – and has made three documentaries, of which Shillong Chamber Choir and the Little Home School was shown in IDFA, Amsterdam in 2008.

After working as a creative producer with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film, Love, Sex Aur Dhokha, Urmi adapted the famous Greek novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos for her next film, Shanghai. Her latest film is Detective Byomkesh Bakshi. An alumnus of the Binger Film Lab, Urmi has also been involved with NFDC since 2011 as a consultant for Film Bazaar and script labs.

3. Romain Compingt

Romain Compingt is the youngest graduate of CEEA – the Conservatoire Européen d’écriture Audiovisuelle, where he is now a teacher. Populaire(directed by Régis Roinsard), his first feature film as screenwriter, has been released worldwide and has been nominated for five César awards.

Romain has co-written Divines, directed by Houda Benyamina, which won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2016. Known for bringing sensibility to a wide range of characters and for his strength in structure, Romain has also worked as a script doctor in the film La Fille De Brest, by Emmanuelle Bercot, which is set for release at the end of 2016.

NFDC Screenwriter's Lab

NFDC Film Bazaar 2016 officially announces Call for Entries for the 10th Co-Production Market from filmmakers with compelling South Asian stories seeking co-production, financial and artistic support.

Date : The applications will be accepted from May 23 until July 11, and with late fee until July 25, 2016. The final selection would be announced in September 2016.

The Co-production Market, which is one of the main segments of the NFDC Film Bazaar, is held between 20 – 24 November in Goa.

Selection : 20 remarkable South Asian stories will be selected this year. Projects get to pitch their film to the Indian and international film community that attends Film Bazaar with a focus on fiction features.

The pre-requisite of submission states that the project can be from any country dealing with a South Asian theme, must have a producer and director attached with 25% of the finance in place. In addition to the above the project must have scope for international co-production, distribution and sales.

Film Bazaar : Open Pitch, a unique platform, was created last year to increase the visibility of projects. During the Open Pitch, selected participants have a chance to present projects including mood books, trailers or any other visual reference.

Last year 384 meetings were scheduled for 19 projects over four days of the market. The duration of each meeting was 20 minutes. The CPM team provided individual support and set up meetings based on requests received from delegates and the availability of the two parties. (Pre-FB and during FB).

Nineteen projects were selected to participate in the Co-production Market 2015, including films such as Bombay Rose directed by Gitanjali Rao, Manto directed by Nandita Das, Agra directed by Kanu Behl, Pirates by directed Ritesh Raj More and produced by Ritesh Batra, A Goat’s Life directed by Fahad Mustafa (of Katiyabaaz fame),Newton directed by Amit V Masurkar (of Sulemani Keeda fame) and produced by Manish Mundra, Drishyam Films, Memories and My Mother (Bengali) directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta (Labour of Love fame)

Past success stories: A few notable films that were represented at the Co-Production Market over the years are Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court, Aushim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely, Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni’s Deool and Highway, Mostofa Farooki’s Television.

NFDC Film Bazaar 2015 has announces the final selected projects for its main segment – the Co-production Market which will be held between 20 – 24 November in Goa.

– This year, 19 projects have been selected to participate in the Market, including one invited project from IFP (Independent  Filmmaker Project).

– The Market has gained added leverage in 2015 with the introduction of Open Pitch where selected filmmakers will be pitching their projects to a curated audience of national and international producers, financiers and sales agents.

The selected projects for 2015 are:

  •  Bombay Rose (Hindi)

Directed by Gitanjali Rao (her short animation film Printed Rainbow won three prizes for the best short film in Cannes Critic’s Week 2006 and was short-listed for the Oscars in 2008) and produced by Clara Mahieu, Les Films D’ici

  • Pirates (Hindi)

Directed by Raj Rishi More (An associate and assistant director on films like  The Lunchbox) Pirates, his first feature, was part of Sundance ScreenWriters’ Lab, India 2015 and produced by Lunchbox director Ritesh Batra’s Poetic License Motion Pictures. It is his maiden production.

Directed by Amit V Masurkar (of Sulemani Keeda fame) and produced by Manish Mundhra, Drishyam Films
