It’s been a good year for Hindi films so far. Good films making good money and getting critical acclaim too. Just what should happen in an ideal world. And it seems like Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s debut feature Nil Battey Sannata will carry the baton forward.

Do check out its recently released trailer.

12799155_10153278624992676_2398086390787374748_nThe film stars Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Pathak, Pankaj Tripathi & Ria. It’s produced by Aanand L. Rai, Ajay G. Rai, Alan McAlex, Sanjay Shetty & Nitesh Tiwari. Eros is presenting the film.

In an industry where most actress shy away from any mature roles, and even the actresses from previous generation doesn’t want to play any mother/sister role, it’s quite brave of Swara to take up the challenge. Some of us have seen the film. An assured debut by Ashwiny, it’s a heartwarming film backed by good writing and sincere performances.

Nil Battey Sannata releases on 22nd April, 2016.

Brahman Naman

Q’s new film is soon going to have its world premiere at the ongoing Sundance Film Festival in World Cinema Dramatic Competition segment. It will compete with 11 other films in that segment.. And just before its screening, the makers have released the teaser of the film. Check it out.

And here’s the official synopsis –

It’s the 1980s and Naman (Shashank Arora, star of Cannes hit TITLI) is a know-it-all nerd driven by the whims of his raging hormones. Heading up Bangalore University’s team of bespectacled misfits (best friends Ajay and Ramu), the trio of lusty intellectuals spend the majority of their time on the quizzing circuit, using their winnings to buy nudie magazines, whiskey, and beer, fantasizing about the buxom neighborhood beauty all the while. When the boys qualify for the National Quiz Championships, they make a booze-fuelled train trip across the country determined to defeat their rivals in Calcutta and desperate to lose their virginities along the way.

Unfolding to the tune of the iconic anthem, “Whiskey Bar,” as Naman and his friends run amok against the colorful backdrop of the Indian landscape, his quest for sex and glory is complicated when he finds his intellectual superior in a stunning female quizzer. Directed by Indian filmmaker Q. (known for his controversial cult hit Gandu) Brahman Naman is a smart, raucous sex comedy that’s raunchy and endearing in equal measure— replete with innovative masturbation methods that put even Philip Roth’s Alexander Portnoy to shame.

11221886_10154045180829863_6005978746482162900_nAcclaimed production designer Samir Chanda made his directorial debut with a Bengali film titled Ek Nadir Golpo (Tale Of A River). The film stars Mithun Chakrabaorty, Shweta Prasad and Jisshu Sengupta. It’s an adaptation of a short story by well known Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhay.

Unfortunately, because of his untimely death in 2011, he could not see the release of the film.

Now, his son Sandeepan Chanda shared the good news about its release on a FB post.

So here is a little story for those who might not know about it.

Back in 2006, my father decided to take a break from being a production designer and make his directorial debut. He chose to adapt a small Bengali story he had read and was deeply moved by when he was in his college days. After borrowing money from his friends and also putting in all his savings, he jumped head first into the project. We all became involved in it, all his family members, most of his friends and then by his sheer enthusiasm and passion, we finished the film a year later. It went on to be screened at various prestigious film festivals and was critically lauded by all. He now only needed to share his labor of love with the audience.

But unfortunately he struggled to find a distributor/exhibitor who would buy the film and release it in theaters. A struggle that went on for the next four years before his untimely death in 2011. His wish remained unfulfilled.

My mother then took on the responsibility to shop the film to various production companies and distributors. And now because of her persistence and having the patience to endure smaller setbacks, the film, 8 years after being filmed, is all set to release in theaters on 14th of August, this year. A dream which started with my father, soon became ours and is now on its way to become a reality.
