UPDATE –   Deadline Extended for NFDC Film Bazaar’s Work-in-Progress Lab & Viewing Room. The New Deadline is October 17, 2012.

On popular demand from directors applying to the Work-In-Progress Lab, NFDC Film Bazaar has extended the deadline to October 17, 2012. This deadline extension is applicable to the Viewing Room as well.

NFDC Film Bazaar 2012 invites entries for the Work-in-Progress Lab and the Viewing Room.

Date & Venue :  The 6th Film Bazaar will be held from November 21-24, 2012 at the Goa Marriott Resort (India) alongside the International Film Festival of India 2012.

Deadline : The submission deadline is October 10th 2012.

Work-in-Progress: At the Work in Progress (WIP) Lab, 5 selected projects in their rough cut stage are presented to a panel of international film experts. The intention is to help the filmmaker achieve an accomplished final cut through expert insights.

– Celebrated film critic & historian, Derek Malcolm; Head of Israel Film Fund, Katriel Schory & Chris Paton from Fortissimo Films were the mentors for 2011 WIP Lab.

– The films from the 2011 Lab have gone on to have World premieres at prestigious international film festivals: Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely (World Premiere, Cannes Film Festival in official competition section-Un Certain Regard) Manjeet Singh’s Mumbai Cha Raja and Anand Gandhi’s Ship of Theseus (World Premiere, Toronto Film Festival 2012), Ajay Bahl’s BA Pass (World Premiere, 12th Osian’s Cinefan Film Festival).

CRITERIA : The lab is open only to feature length films and documentaries in the rough-cut.

Viewing Room : Previously known as Screening Room, it was successfully introduced in FB 2011 with the aim of presenting films seeking finishing funds, world sales, distribution partners & film festivals to investors, world sales agents and film festival programmers.

– The Films are viewed on individual computer terminals in private booths via a specially designed Viewing Room software, which allows the viewer to watch complete films, access details of the film as well as contact the director or producer.

CRITERIA : This section is open to films of all genres and lengths which are complete or in the rough cut stage. Films presented in this section last year have been selected by various film festivals.

Six scripts selected for NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab, 2012

The sixth edition of Film Bazaar in which the Screenwriters’ Lab is conducted for Indian writers with original screenplays, has announced its results. The Lab is held in partnership with the Venice International Film Festival and has selected six scripts this year.

The second working session will take place in Goa at the Film Bazaar.

PVR Director’s Rare to release National Award winning film “Anhey Ghorey De Daan”

Produced by NFDC and directed by debutant Gurvinder Singh, Punjabi film Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan (Alms for a Blind Horse) will be released by PVR Director’s Rare on August 10.

It will have theatrical release in Delhi, Mumbai, Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan was selected in the Orizzonti Section (which showcases ‘New Trends in World Cinema’) of Venice International Film festival, 2011. After this the film was showcased at the 55th British Film Institute, London Film Festival, and the Busan International Film Festival. The film won the Special Jury Mention and the Black Pearl Trophy at the 5th Abu Dhabi Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at the International Film Festival, Rotterdam for its lyrical and scenic narration.

It also bagged three National Awards – for Best Direction, Cinematography and for Best Feature Film in Punjabi.

And here’s the official synopsis…

On a foggy winter morning a family in a village in Punjab wakes up to the news of the demolition of a house on the outskirts of the village. The father, a silent sympathizer, joins the community in demand for justice for the affected family. The same day his son Melu, a cycle-rickshaw puller rickshaw puller in the city, is participating in a strike by his union. Injured and alienated, Melu spends the day quietly resting and hesitantly drinks with friends in the night as they debate the meaning of their existence.

Cycling through the city streets, Melu feels lost and wonders where to go and what to do. Back in the village, his mother feels humiliated at the treatment meted out by the landlords in whose fields she works. Gunshots are heard in the night and the village is tense. It’s the night of the lunar eclipse. A man wanders asking for the traditional alms while Father decides to visit the city with a friend, even as his daughter Dayalo walks through the village streets in the night.

Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan speaks about the margins where the socially repressed and exploited have been conveniently cast away. This is also a film about the signs of simmering fire and about cleft tongues that want to rise in unison, about the possibility of inchoate desire and the first cry of love.

And the Director’s comment…

The human face is a landscape. The lived reality of the face reflects time: endured, lived and suffered. Cinema unravels time through the movement in space. The visible evokes the invisible through relationships, contexts, gestures, and conflicts. There is the immediate invisible, off screen: the image confronting sound, space confronting space, time confronting time. Then there is the larger cosmic invisible, devoid of cause and effect paradigm, layered through centuries.

Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan tries to evoke the effect of years of subordination of the struggling classes reflected in the macrocosm of events spinning beyond their control. It’s about silent witnesses devoid of power to change or influence the course of destiny, about the invisible violence of power equation and simmering discontent reflected on their faces.

WHAT:  Screenwriter’s Lab 2012, a 2-part workshop is designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking market place. It aims at improving a completed screenplay in its final stages and to increase the international marketability of the same.

The Lab is organised in partnership with Binger Filmlab, Netherlands, and the Venice International Film Festival, Italy.

LAB : The 1st Session will be held during the Venice International Film Festival in Venice (31st August- 4th September, 2012) where participants will get first-hand experience of the workings of the international film community and get to train with their screenplay mentors.

The 2nd session at Film Bazaar, Goa from 24–27 November, 2011 is where participants will apply their training and pitch their revised screenplays to participants at the film market. (dates are subjected to change)

MENTORS : The workshop will be conducted by Marten Rabarts, Artistic Director, Binger Filmlab, aided by experienced international guest mentors. It is organized in association with Binger Filmlab, Netherlands and Venice International Film Festival.

DATES : Last date for submitting complete application forms : 31st May 2012.  Results : August 2012

FEES : Application will not be considered complete without the Submission fee of Rs. Three Thousand Only [Rs. 3000/-]. The fee can be paid through cheque/demand draft/electronic transfer. For more details, click here.

Gurvinder Singh’s debut feature Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan (Alms For The Blind Horse) came into the limelight when it was selected for the prestigious Venice Film Festival last year. It premiered in the Orizzonti section of the festival which is presented as an exploration of the modes of contemporary cinema.

And now, almost after a year, two trailers of the film are finally out. Have a look.

The film has been produced by National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and is based on Gurdial Singh’s novel of the same name.

The Film Bazaar Screenwriters’ Lab 2011 held in partnership with Binger Filmlab, Netherlands and the Venice International Film Festival, Italy has announced six shortlisted projects. The first working session will be held at the Venice International Film Festival from September 1 – 3, 2011. The second working session will be held at Film Bazaar, Goa from November 23 – 27, 2011.

Projects selected for the Lab this year are –

The workshop ensures that the participants apply their training and pitch their improvised screenplays to industry professionals from around the globe. The workshop is aimed at preparing these screenwriters to position their screenplays internationally.

The lab advisors for the lab are Marten Rabarts (Artistic Head, Binger Filmlab), Bianca Taal (Industry Advisor, Binger Filmlab), Olivia Stewart (Producer, Writer & Script Advisor) and Urmi Juvekar (Screenwriter & Script Advisor).

Rules and Regulations

i. Two Sessions Compulsory

– The sessions in 2011 will run at the Venice International Film Festival, in September and from 24 – 27 November at Film Bazaar Goa, India. Participants must attend both sessions, must have a valid passport and visa and must be able to travel to Venice.

ii. Costs of the Lab

– The lab will provide accommodation for participants in Venice and Goa, as well as accreditation to the Venice International Film Festival and the Goa Film Bazaar.

– The lab will provide economy air tickets originating from either Mumbai or Delhi for travel to the workshop.

– Participants will have to apply, secure and pay for their own visas as well as their travel insurance. The organizers will not be responsible for the above if additional charges are incurred.

Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots & Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat selected for Toronto International Film Festival 2010

We told you so! Though we are now bored of repeating it again and again but who doesn’t love some cheap thrills and ego massage. Much before the official announcement, we had put out this exclusive post confirming Dhobi Ghat’s selection for Toronto International Film Festival. The official list is finally out.  We knew that three Indian films have been selected for TIFF. So, one is still missing ? Will it be added later on or we got confused ? Someone please enlighten!

Kiran Rao’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat will have it world premiere at TIFF in the Special Presentations. And here is the official synopsis of the film…..

In the teeming metropolis of Mumbai, four people separated by class and language are drawn together in compelling relationships. Shai, an affluent investment banker on a sabbatical, strikes up an unusual friendship with Munna, a young and beautiful laundry boy with ambitions of being a Bollywood actor, and has a brief dalliance with Arun, a gifted painter. As they slip away from familiar moorings and drift closer together, the city finds its way into the crevices of their inner worlds.

The other film selected for TIFF2010 is Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl In Yellow Boots starring Kalki Koechlin. The film will have its North American Premiere under Special Presentations. And here is the official synopsis of the film…..

Ruth is searching for her father – a man she hardly knew but cannot forget. Desperation drives her to work without a permit, at a massage parlour, where she gives ‘happy endings’ to unfulfilled men. Torn between several schisms, Mumbai becomes the backdrop for Ruth’s quest as she struggles to find her independence and space even as she is sucked deeper into the labyrinthine politics of the city’s underbelly.

Lot of our friends and readers have been asking us about the NFDC Screenwriters Lab 2010, so here it is. One of us was part of the Lab last year and it was quite enriching experience. Now am more confused and have more questions to answers. BTW, did i tell that Locarno is gorgeous! So, if you are a screenwriter and want to apply for the Lab, read on.

What : NFDC is organising Screenwriters Lab 2010 for promising script writers. The 2-part workshop is designed to prepare screenwriters’ with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking market place. It aims at improving a completed screenplay in its final stages and to increase the international marketability of the same.

This is done  in association with Binger Filmlab, the Locarno International Film Festival and the Entertainment Society of Goa.

Workshop: The 1st Session will be held during the Locarno International Film Festival, Locarno, Switzerland from 7th – 9th August, 2010 where participants will get first-hand experience of the workings of the international film community and get to train with their screenplay mentors.

The 2nd session will be at Film Bazaar, Goa from 23th – 26th November 2010 where participants will apply their training and pitch their revised screenplays to participants at the film market.

Who : The workshop will be conducted by Marten Rabarts, Artistic Director, Binger Filmlab alongwith other guest mentors.

Eligibility : To participate in the workshop the participants need to submit entry form along with screenplay in classic format, Log-line, one page synopsis along with screenwriters’ CV in English. A letter of intent and a DVD of previous work (if existing).

Applications: The applications are available online at www.filmbazaarindia.com or email writers@nfdcindia.com for the application form.

Last Date : The application must be sent to NFDC before 17th May, 2010.
