NFDC (National Film Development Corporation Ltd) today announced the six finalists of the Screenwriters’ Lab 2014.

In its eighth edition, the first stage of the Lab this year will be held in Sarajevo Film Festival (15 – 23 August 2014) culminating in the second stage prior to and during Film Bazaar (20- 24 November 2014). The market, like every year, will be held along side IFFI (International Film Festival), in Goa.

 The six scripts / screenwriters selected are:

  1.  The Boyfriend – Vidur Nauriyal and Ashim Ahluwalia
  2. Winter– Aamir Bashir
  3. Char Log Kya Kahenge – Hitesh Bhatia
  4. Flow – Vandana Kohli
  5. All about Her – Ruchi Joshi
  6. The Sunset Club – Karan Tejpal

Details about the scripts/writers

– Vidur Nauriyal and Ashim Ahluwalia – The Boyfriend will be the second feature from the team behind Miss Lovely, directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, which was screened at Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival 2013. Ashim recently received the Hubert Bals Fund for script and project development (a Rotterdam festival initiative) for The Boyfriend. Miss Lovely was one of the five projects at Film Bazaar’s Co-production Market 2008 and Work-In-Progress Lab 2011.

– Aamir Bashir – Winter, is the second feature to follow Harud (Autumn), Aamir’s debut film, which premiered in Toronto Film Festival 2010. As an actor he has also appeared in some of the highlights of the new independent cinema including A Wednesday, Peepli Live and Frozen (TIFF 2007)

– Hitesh Bhatia – Comes to the Lab with a wealth of experience in commercials and directing commercial TV shows and has moved his focus to feature films as he embarks on this new phase in his career with his project Char Log Kya Kahenge

– Vandana Kohli – Has scripted, directed and edited projects for clients including The National Geographic Channel, The History Channel, and India’s national broadcaster Doordarshan. Also a photographer and musician, Flow is Vandana’s first feature film project.

– Ruchi Joshi – Followed her film studies in Melbourne Australia with work in music videos, commercials and independent feature films in Mumbai. All about Her is her second project as a screenwriter.

– Karan Tejpal – Has worked for several years in the film industry making commercials for global brands and working as assistant director on mainstream feature films including the mega-hit 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munnabhai and Ferrari Ki Sawari. His first feature will be The Sunset Club, adapted from Khushwant Singh’s novel of the same name.

– The mentors of the Lab include noted experts from the industry, namely, Marten Rabarts, Senior Consultant – Training and Development, NFDC Labs; Olivia Stewart, Script Developer; Urmi Juvekar, Script Developer; Bianca Taal, International Industry Advisor.

– NFDC’s Screenwriters’ Lab was introduced in the year 2007 with the Co-production Market in the inception year of Film Bazaar. The Lab gives an opportunity to six independent screenwriters to develop their skill under the guidance of a variety of industry experts from across the globe. Through one-on-one sessions with their mentors, the Screenwriter fellows are advised on tools and techniques required to improve their scripts and methods to pitch the same in the international domain. The previous editions of the Lab were held in Locarno, Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals.

– The Screenwriters’ Lab is specially re-designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking market.

– The Screenwriters’ Lab 2013 finalists at Film Bazaar included: Rajesh Jala’s Chingari (The Spark), Nikhil Mahajan’s Dainik (Daily), Bela Negi’s Kaalapani (Dark Waters), Varun Grover’s Maa Bhagwatiya IIT Coaching Class (Mother Goddess Coaching Class), Shanker Raman’s My Brother the Salesman and I, and Ashish Aryan’s T Se Taj Mahal (T for Taj Mahal). While Rajesh Jala won the Incredible India award for Chingari and also got Cedomir Kolar’s France based ASAP Films board as the co-producer of the film, Nikhil Mahajan’s Blue Drop boarded Varun Grover’s Maa Bhagwatiya IIT Coaching Class as the producer of the film.

NFDC Labs has announced mentors for their Romance Screenwriters Lab.

Habib Faisal (writer/ director) and Bhavani Iyer (writer) are going to mentor the participants of the recently announced Romance Screenwriters’ Lab, and Ashok Banker and Shoma Narayanan will mentor the parallely scheduled Harlequin lab for screen to novel adaptations.

SCREENWRITERS LAB

NFDC, in association with Harlequin, is organising the first-ever Romance Screenwriters’ Lab, which will focus on developing scripts based on romance and women-centric plots.

– The Lab will be held in three stages and the participants will be mentored by three eminent people from the Indian film industry.

– The last stage of the Lab will culminate at Film Bazaar, Goa, where the participants will be given the opportunity to pitch the projects to prospective producers.

– Harlequin will also offer book deals to some of the selected projects, and organize independent workshops with mentors from the publishing industry.

– The Lab is open only to adult Indian passport holders

SELECTION

– The selection process is in two parts. This is the first part of the selection procedure where participants will be shortlisted based on the selected synopsis

– Participants shortlisted for the second stage will be given a scheduled duration to submit completed scripts. Submissions should be made via email only as a single pdf/doc file. Do not send material as separate attachments. No hard copy of submissions are to be sent.

DEADLINE

– All Applications must be received on or before 31st May 2014 by 6 pm.

FEES

– Application fee for the lab is INR 5,000/- only. It is payable by Demand draft made in favour of National Film Development Corporation Ltd., payable at Mumbai, or by Wire Transfer.

VBSundance Institute has announced the 13 projects which have been selected for Screenwriters and Directors Lab. Set at the Sundance Resort in Utah, the Directors Lab will run from May 26 to June 19 and the Screenwriters’ Lab will run from June 21-26. Vasan Bala’s new script Side Hero has been selected for the Screenwriters Lab.

Vasan Bala (writer/director) / Side Hero (India): A teenager who lives by the codes of his beloved kung fu movies must find his own way when he discovers that he may never get to be the hero.

Vasan Bala was born and raised in Mumbai. Both his father and grandfather were film buffs whose love of film inspired his own. Bala has collaborated in various capacities with filmmakers including Anurag Kashyap, Michael Winterbottom, and Danis Tanvoic. His debut feature as a writer/director, Peddlers, screened in Critics Week at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

The Workshop:

IIT Madras is presenting Imaging Cinema 2014, a Screenwriting-cum-Filmmaking Workshop from 7-14 June. The focus is on various aspects of screenwriting. Experienced resource persons will conduct Sessions on screenwriting. Special sessions on aspects of direction and screenwriting will be conducted by established names from Mumbai and South Indian cine industries (including directors, screenwriters, and actors). About IITM Film Workshops:

IIT Madras has become a well-known centre for highly popular film workshops. In May 2009 the institute hosted the Chennai International Screenwriting Workshop which was organized under the auspices of Padma Bhushan Dr Kamal Haasan’s Rajkamal Studio. This 5 day Workshop included sessions by Shri K Balachander, Shekhar Kapoor, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Sriram Raghavan, Atul Tiwari, and Anjum Rajabali.

This was followed by a spate of successful events including a 6 day screenwriting cum conclave on filmmaking in 2010 , which had Dibakar Banerjee, K Balachander, RBalki, Santosh Sivan, PC Sreeram, Jaideep Sahni, Shimit Amin, Nagesh Kukunoor, Saurabh Shukla, editor Sreekar Prasad, and Tamil film directors Vishnuvardhan and CS Amudhan.

In 2012, a 10 day filmmaking workshop was organized where faculty members from FTII, Pune and LV Prasad Institute, Chennai conducted sessions on various aspects of filmmaking such as screenwriting, direction, cinematography, editing, sound and set designing. Participants produced a 3- 5 minute feature at the end of the workshop. Speakers included Rohan Sippy, Anurag Kashyap, Sriram & Sridhar Raghavan, Habib Faisel, Ravi K Chandran, Tamil directors Vetrimaaran and Kumarrajan Thiagarajan and writers Subha and Bala.

The uniqueness of these workshops lie in their outreach where candidates from a cross section of society interact with established names from the Indian film industry. Many of our previous attendees have gone on to make a mark for them in film and media industry, and are currently in the process of making and screenwriting for films or assisting filmmakers of repute.

humaramovie-pvr-short-film-competitionWHAT: HumaraMovie, in association with PVR Cinemas, announces the first ever, Pan India Short Film Festival. The participants will get a chance to showcase their work not only on Humaramovie platforms but also in a PVR theatre.

HOW: 

The highlights of the competition are as follows –

– Open to filmmakers/ creative artists all across India
– Filmmakers will be guided through every step. They will have access to a script consultant,  as well as guides for production and editing
– Participants will have access to acclaimed filmmakers as mentors. The mentors are Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane, Anand Gandhi, Imtiaz Ali
– The selected participants will have their films screened in PVR as well as on HumaraMovie platforms

PRIZE MONEY
– The winner will get prize money of Rs. 1,00,000.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Filmmakers should submit an already existing film, along with a short 150 word bio about themselves.
  • On the basis of the bio and the submitted film a preliminary shortlist will be made
  • The shortlisted candidates will be given a topic on which they have to submit screenplays.
  • Based on the screenplays we will further shortlist candidates who will then have to make the feature film.
  • There is no restriction on the genre of the film.
  • The duration of the short film should not exceed 15 minutes inclusive of opening and end credits
  • The contestants will be guided at every stage and will have access to script analysts as well as a mentor
  • The final films that the contestants submit will be screened in PVR (post going through a DCP and censor)
  • The screenings will be open for all and the winners will be decided by audience vote.

As we have done in the past, this year too we are trying to source the scripts of some of the best films of the year. As most of you know, the scripts of Hollywood films are easily available online, even the unreleased ones. But we don’t have any such database for Hindi or Indian films. So that has been the primary reason for this initiative. And it has been possible because some of the filmmakers have been very supportive about it. It’s only for educational purpose and much like the spirit of the blog, is a complete non-profitable exercise. Thanks to Abhishek Kapoor, Hansal Mehta, Vikramaditya Motwane and Nikhil Advani, we have been able to post the script of Kai Po Che!, Shahid, Lootera, D Day – hereherehere and here respectively.

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox has been one of the most critically acclaimaed and successful film of the year. It’s still running in US and few other territories. It’s been a long time since an Indian film manage to go beyond the diaspora crowd and The Lunhcbox set a new benchmark in that regard.

Thanks to Ritesh Batra, we are posting the script of The Lunchbox. Since its US release was due, we could not post it earlier.

Mumbai Mantra Sundance Institute Screewriters LabMumbai Mantra, the media and entertainment division of the Mahindra Group, in collaboration with Sundance Institute, has selected eight Indian Screenwriters and their feature film projects for the third annual Mumbai Mantra | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab, to be held from March 16-21 at the Club Mahindra Resort in Tungi.

– This year’s Screenwriting Fellows, selected from submissions from India and the Indian diaspora around the world, are: Navneet Behal (Experiments with Truth); Ashvin Kumar (Noor); Bornila Chatterjee (Nuclear Hearts); Gaurav Madan (Shaktipur Crude); Deepanjali B Sarkar (Svadharma); Dylan Mohan Gray (The Last Day of Winter); Sanjay Talreja (The River Murder); and Neeraj Ghaywan and Varun Grover (Ud Jayega / Fly Away Solo).

EXPERIMENTS WITH TRUTH

LOGLINE: Following three children over the course of eighteen years, Experiments With Truth explores a recent history of state-sponsored violence.

Writer/director: Navneet Behal

While pursuing his Masters in Film at the New York Institute of Technology, Navneet Behal started work in New York as a camera operator. Upon his return to India, Navneet worked as Associate Director on a Hindi feature film, produced by Wild Elephant Motion Pictures. He is currently directing his first feature film, produced by M.A.S Universal Fin & Intra, due for release in 2015.

NOOR

LOGLINE: A six year-old girl sets out to find her missing father and stumbles upon mass graves, implicating the Indian army and putting herself in danger.

Writer/director: Ashvin Kumar

Ashvin Kumar is the youngest Indian filmmaker to be nominated for an Academy Award, for Little Terrorist, which played at 130 film festivals, winning 25 awards, including Honourable Mention at BAFTA/LA and a nomination by the European Film Academy. In 2012, his documentary Inshallah Football was awarded the National Award, India’s highest honor for cinema. Its sequel Inshallah, Kashmir won the National Award for best investigative film in 2013. His other work includes Dazed in Doon and The Forest.

NUCLEAR HEARTS

LOGLINE: A Bengali lounge singer who becomes involved with two French expats living in Calcutta, India.

Writer/director: Bornila Chatterjee

Bornila Chatterjee graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Film and TV in 2008. Her debut feature film, Let’s Be Out, The Sun Is Shining, premiered at the 2012 New York Indian Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and received a Best Actress nomination for lead Lipica Shah. Bornila was previously Managing Director of Stone Street Studios, a screen acting school and advanced conservatory in the Department of Drama at Tisch. Bornila is a curator and essayist for Vyer Films, a Brooklyn-based film streaming service, and a writer for Overdose Art Pvt. Ltd, a progressive art platform and production company in Calcutta, India.

SHAKTIPUR CRUDE

LOGLINE: When oil is discovered, a small village at Indo-China border suddenly becomes the most important place in the country and changes the lives of its people forever.

Writer/director: Gaurav Madan

Gaurav Madan grew up in a small town in Haryana. He received his Masters in Communications from University of Pune. He has won several awards for his commercial work, and owns an advertising production company based in Mumbai. His first screenplay was 3 nights 4 days, which was completed in 2009.

SVADHARMA

LOGLINE: The true story of an army officer who is betrayed by his government and sentenced to eight years of solitary confinement.

Writer/director: Deepanjali B Sarkar

Deepanjali B Sarkar is a digital media content specialist with experience ranging from internet and telecom content to corporate communications. She has worked with ITC, Indiatimes.com and Mobifusion. An alumnus of Presidency College Kolkata and Jadavpur University, she blogs regularly at http://filmandbookclub.blogspot.com/.

THE LAST DAY OF WINTER

LOGLINE: Condemned by a thuggish political regime as the son of a traitor, a 15-year-old boy faces a torturous set of choices as he reluctantly leaves childhood behind.

Writer/director: Dylan Mohan Gray

Dylan Mohan Gray is an award-winning producer, writer and director. His documentary Fire in the Blood was presented at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and set a record for the longest theatrical run by a non-fiction feature film in Indian history. Fire in the Blood has won major awards in Washington, Hamburg and Vancouver and also received the award for Best Debut Film at the 2014 Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). Trained as a historian, Dylan founded the production company Sparkwater India in 2005 and has worked in various capacities on feature films, including collaborations with directors Fatih Akin, Peter Greenaway, Paul Greengrass, Deepa Mehta and Mira Nair.

THE RIVER MURDER

LOGLINE: A small town cop investigates whether a body found floating on the river is one of four missing local men.

Writer/director: Sanjay Talreja

Sanjay Talreja is an award-winning writer, director and editor of narrative features and documentaries, whose work has appeared on television and at film festivals. He most recently wrote and directed the feature film Surkhaab, which won Best Director, Foreign Language Feature at the 2013 London International Film Festival. Sanjay also teaches at various colleges and universities in Canada, the US and India. He has a MFA in Film.

UD JAYEGA (FLY AWAY SOLO)

LOGLINE: Four lives intersect along the Ganges river, each yearning to escape the constrictions of a small town.

Writers-director: Neeraj Ghaywan / Varun Grover (co-writer)

Neeraj Ghaywan worked with Anurag Kashyap on the veteran director’s two-part opus Gangs of Wasseypur and as second unit director on Ugly. His short films as writer-director include Shor and The Epiphany. Shor won the grand jury prize at three International film festivals.

Varun Grover grew up in Dehradun and Lucknow. He has written stand-up comedy for various TV shows and currently performs stand-up comedy at the biggest venues in India, writes fiction and graphic series for children in Chakmak (published from Bhopal, by Eklavya), and has written lyrics for Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Vasan Bala’s Peddlers (2012), Rajat Kapoor’s Aankhon Dekhi (2013), and Fahad Mustafa/Deepti Kakkar’s Katiyabaaz (2013).

Nikhil Advani burst into the scene with a terrific debut, Kal Ho Na Ho. Rarely someone gets everything so pitch perfect in a debut film, and that too when done in mainstream space. But since then he has not been able to repeat its success. This year he found his mojo back with D Day, but by going out of the space in which he has been making films so far. Unlike any of his previous films, this one was a taut edge of the seat thriller, specially the flawless first half. And when every damn song looks the same in every damn film these days, he gave us one of the best set pieces in Alvida. Who says we don’t need songs in a thriller?

Lootera has been a subject of much debate and discussion on this blog. And if you are regular reader of this blog, you probably know that unlike other filmmakers Vikramaditya Motwane has always been gracious enough to take it in the right spirit. He has also been much supportive of this endeavor to share scripts publicly and helped us by sharing the script of his film Udaan earlier. If you haven’t read the script, it’s here.
