Call For Entries – Swachh Bharat Short Film Festival

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is organising a short-film festival on the concept on “Swachh Bharat”. And it’s inviting shorts for the same. The contest is open to everyone

Here are the basic rules and regulations that you need to know

Festival Regulations

1. The Festival shall be a competition of short films & shall be held on 2nd October 2016 in Siri Fort Auditorium.
2. The applicant is duly authorized, on his/her behalf and on the behalf of any person or entity that has ownership rights in the work, to submit to the Festival and the applicant declares that this submission is not in violation of any law nor violates any right of said person or entity or that of any third party in any manner whatsoever.
3. The Swachh Bharat short film festival, its officers, as well as any of its fiscal sponsors and affiliated entities is not responsible, for any damage to, or loss of, any materials submitted by the applicant, whether that damage occurs en route to or from the Festival or during the course of the Festival’s possession, any loss caused to the film material or otherwise, in or during the Festival or of said materials.

Submission Guidelines

1.Entries open only for short film with duration of not more than 3 min (180 secs). To be shot in HD format.

2. The films can be made in any of the listed official languages of India and must be subtitled in English.
3. The film must be produced in the last 1 year preceding the Festival, i.e. with effect from 1 October 2015.

Deadline

Submission deadline Sept 10, 2016.

Fees

There is no entry fee for submissions.

Awards

Best film – shall carry a cash prize of INR Ten (10) Lakhs and a certificate.
Three (3) films falling in Second Best Category – each shall be awarded a cash prize INR Five (5) Lakhs.
Six films (6) falling in Third Best Category – each shall be awarded a cash prize of INR Two (2) Lakhs.

Lights Out

David Sandberg’s horror feature, Lights Out, has released in theatres this week. And if you are not aware, it was actually a short film by Sandberg and his wife, Lotta Losten, that led to this feature.

Sunday Short : Devashish Makhija’s Taandav

Its been a while since we have posted a new film in our Sunday Shorts segment. But this week, we got a new short by writer and filmmaker Devashish Makhija. This film has Manoj Bajpayee in the lead, and he is in terrific form here, even if it is just a glance here, and a reaction there. Music is by Nucleya. Watch it.

TaandavHead constable Tambe isn’t having the best of days.

His wife slams doors in his face.

His little daughter won’t speak to him.

His only friends, havaldaars Sawant and Shilwant, feel cheated by him.

And to make matters worse, he’s been given nightlong Ganpati visarjan bandobast duty.

The lights are blinding.
The drums are deafening.
Explosions.
Clanging.
Flashing.
Thrashing.
His senses are being attacked from every which way.
Every screaming face seems to be mocking him tonight.

His blood…
slowly…
rises…
to a…
boil…
Until he snaps, plunges into the crowd, pulls his gun out, and as jaws drop around him…
he unleashes a TAANDAV!

 

VOTD : Bikas Mishra’s Short Film ‘Naach Ganesh’

Bikas Mishra’s debut feature Chauranga is all set to release this friday. The film bagged the top award in the section of Indian films at last year’s Mumbai Film Festival. And it seemed like a good time to look back at his earlier film – short titled Naach Ganesh (Dance Of Ganesha).

The film was screened at Busan, Rotterdam,  Clermont-Ferrand and few other international film festival.

About the film

An Indian folk dancer is caught in his daily struggle of survival in an automobile factory. The burden to earn a living for his family and preserve his family tradition of ritual Ganesha dancing is humongous. His two roles – the sole bread winner of the family and the magnificent elephant god Ganesha, are so diverse that his journey from factory to village looks like time travel and his existence schizophrenic! Ganesha, the dancer lives in the fear of the day when he will have to choose between livelihood and art/tradition

Sunday Shorts : Jaydeep Sarkar’s “Nayantara’s Necklace”

We are back to our ‘Sunday Shorts’ feature after a long time. Hopefully we will be able to do it more regularly. This sunday, we are featuring a new short titled Nayanatara’s Necklace, directed by Jaydeep Sarkar. It stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Tilottama Shome, two of the finest actors we have. And it’s great fun to see how the two of them together can add magic to even mundane conversation.

The is produced by Royal Stag, as part of their ‘Large Short Films’ initiative, which earlier produced Sujoy Ghosh’s short Ahalya. One suggestion – why no subtitles? That is so strange, especially in an era of internet and when that’s your platform.

 

VOTD : Ashvin Kumar’s short “Little Terrorist”

Little Terrorist, a short film directed by Ashvin Kumar was nominated for Academy Award for Live Action Short Film in 2005. And if you haven’t seen the film yet, here’s the good news – the filmmaker has put the film online.

Here’s his note with the film –

The Gurdaspur Attack, the arrest of Mohameed Naved and escalation of hostilities on the LOC raise troubling questions about freedom and independence. Real people live real lives on either side of these fences. Barbed wire cuts the landscape of humanity, culture, civilisation; dividing children from their history. They stymie that very human touch that could resolve such a conflict. I don’t know which film-maker would say this, but I am almost dismayed that this film has aged so well. Its message of hope, my wide-eyed idealism for an even handed resolution feel a bit naive, given the hawkish, illiberal, imperialist impulses that have come to characterise public life today. Sigh. Anyway, suspend disbelief for fifteen minutes on the fifteenth of August and feel good.

Since his commercial and critical hit Kahaani in 2012, Sujoy Ghosh has been missing in action. But here’s a pleasant surprise – he has directed a 14-minute short as part of Large Short Films.

Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Radhika Apte, this one is a smart spin on the story of Ahalya. Do watch.
