25th December (Friday) – This is how it started (see the pic). Chetan Bhagat and his book is not mentioned in the opening credits of the film 3 Idiots. In the closing credit, it comes quite late.

1st January (Friday) – Vidhu Vinod Chopra started the year with a bang. Shut Up! Today at a presser in Delhi, Vidhu Vinod Chopra lost his cool and went insane when asked about Chetan Bhagat’s claims. Check out the video.

And here is more….

September 9, 2009Here is the link to an interview where RajKumar Hirani said that the film is only 5 percent similar to the book.

How true are you keeping 3 Idiots to the book by Chetan Bhagat Five Point Someone?

3 Idiots is inspired from the book but it is completely different. I would say just five per cent of it is the same. Books and films are different. So the moment you decide to pick up a book and make a film as it is, it will be a disaster. It’s a nice book, but it’s anecdotal and films can’t be anecdotal. It has to have a story. The reason I mention this is because people should not go to the theatre thinking, we are going to watch Five Point Someone and later find out that it’s a completely different film.

Chetan Bhagat is also not exactly holier-than-thou. He said that he never read the script or may be, just the first draft. But check out this video (thnx for the tip Mohammad Moizuddin), at 5:30, Chetan saying that Raju narrated the full script to him, 2-3 times.

We havent read the book. But those who have, said its easily more than 5-10 percent. And if thats the case, then Chetan surely deserves better place in the credit. Watch any film which is based on any book, its always mentioned in the opening credits. And if the similarity is beyond the set up and the one liner pitch, Chetan also deserves a story credit.

Whats surprising is that in the centre of it is Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The man who doesnt leave any small credit. Remember the song bande me tha dum in Munnabhai MBBS. If we are not wrong, Vidhu Vinod Chopra suggested one or two lines of the song, to be exact, just the phrase bande me that dum! Rest was all written by Swanand Kirkire. But check out anywhere, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is credited everywhere for those few words. He made sure that he is credited.

At the Apsara Awards that year, when the song was nominated and only Swanand’s name was mentioned in the nomination list, VVC was shouting from rooftop for getting his name in the credit list. Yeh to poori kahani hai Sirji!

We love the filmmaker because he is insanely passionate about films and has discovered some great talent. He is the only producer who shares profit with his cast and crew. Abhijaat Joshi was paid Rs 1 crore after the sucess of Lage Raho Munnabhai. A writer getting a crore in this country ?? Thats Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. But thats VVC!

But the man is equally pompous and loud and loves talking about only his films. Its difficult to say why he did this to Chetan Bhagat, whose PR guys are always on overdrive to the point of irritation. But sadly this time, the man seems to be on the right side. And isnt it a great irony! The film which told us that ranks, grades and marks are not everything, their makers are fighting over the credit! Wow! Strange are the ways of bollywood. And you, Mr RajKumar Hirani, where do you stand ?

  2. Yashpal says:

Why is Dia Mirza credited there (See pic)??

  3. Harish S Ram says:

VVC even backed out from the contract that Rajneethi movie’s teaser shouldn’t come with 3 idiots as people who saw both at the end of the film were speaking nly about rajneethi!

  4. bksingh2009 says:

And do you know that Chetan was paid 1 lakh as initial remuneration and a bonus of 10 lakh if the film becomes a hit. However shitty the book might be, it still is one of bestsellers by an Indian writer writing in english. So little valuation!!Add to it he was denied proper credit too.

Looks like VVC didn’t find CB of any use in future. Whereas he needs people like Abhijat and Hirani.

As Vir Sanghvi had stated in this tweet – Contrast how Danny Boyle treated Vikas Swarup even though Slumdog was quite different from the book with how Bhagat is being treated. Things like acknowledging contribution dont come to us(Indians) naturally.

  5. Jean says:

Well Chetan should get his due, bollywood has always acted with writers in this manner. and this is really sad.

  6. Clyvin says:

Chetan deserves better and Idiots gang are true to their title!.
Aamir and Hirani should be ashamed for this episode and I’m 100% certain that they both read the book, because without reading it they cannot change it!!

  7. @pvijay says:

While agreeing Chetan Bhagat shuda mentiond in th opening credit, i repeat tht he doesnt deserve much of it: http://bit.ly/7f04YV If he claims the film is 75% of his buk,he’s doin injustice to himself.A buk is not merely made of characters/incidents.What givs it life is th philosophy at th core, whch is diffrnt frm tht of th film.FPS said what not to do & 3 idiots wht ideally to. If Chetan Bhagat wants credit for chars/incidents,so does originators of th fwd mails frm which othr situations r blatantly copied. STRONGLY AGREEING 2 his blog post abt givng credit 2 writer. They com 1st;w/o them, nuthng exists in a film. But 3 idiots is NOT FPS! Remembrd what Malayalam author Thakazhi said abt a film based on 2 of his chars”Am not a fathr who peeps into daugtr’s nuptial nite 2see hw groom’s handln her” #3idiots

    • Arjun says:

But my dear friend with due respect to your opinion and the great Thakazhi, i just need to ask this – did the Malayalam movie reap in 100 crore in the first week. I would have flipped if I was in Chetan’s position. Chetan might have got his money but don’t take away the credit. The idiots are lying. And for once I agree with Chetan. For me, the book was pepsi and the film was the same pepsi in a coke bottle. Btw your post on this issue is the best I’ve read.

  8. Fatema says:

It’s like we got to go and ask the makers of Maggie sweet and hot chilli sauce-its different what the meaning of ‘different’ means!

    What rubbish!

  9. mogambo says:

Excuse me while i differ on this balderdash

Why is everyone being brainwashed by the media? This is the message being crammed down your throats – “CB didnt get enough credit because his name was mentioned so far down the credit roll”

CB says earlier that Hirani did show him the script, and now he blogs saying he never saw it. Isn’t it ridiculous to moan about not being credited AFTER the movie releases (or should i say when the movie releases)?

Why don’t you see the bigger picture here – wouldn’t CB ASK where is name would be credited BEFORE letting the filmmakers begin production? If you were a best selling author, and some big shot comes to you and asks you if he could make a movie based on your book, wouldn’t the first question be this – “What about my credit? Where would my name be mentioned? Whats in it for me?”

Wake the fuck up. It looks like a publicity stunt. Or CB is a very foolish man for signing contracts without reading them. Or agreeing to terms without listening to them.

  10. […] their story has more twists and turns than the film. If you are still interested, you can click here to know more. Lets see what we got to […]

  11. Director of the film 3 Idiots, Mr Chopra stated that the film contains around 5 % of the original content of the Chetan Bhagats novel Five Point Some One and accordingly he was paid around 9.9 lakh, director also stated that he has shown the film to Mr. Bhagat. But the reality is that copying of the novel is more than 5 % and which version of the … See Morefilm was shown to Mr.Bhagat is also not clearly mentioned by Mr. Chopra. Mr. Bhagat was also not properly recognised by the film 3 Idiots. That is the violation of Moral right of Mr. Bhagat as per Sec. 57 of the Copyright Act 1957 of India. Mr. Bhagat may approach to the Court for infringement of moral rights. But it seems that there is some understanding among the producer, director, actors of the film and Mr. Bhagat to create controversies for publicity.

  12. striker says:

    saw this right?

  13. moifightclub says:

@striker – yeah and makes me dislike him more. look at the way the video has been edited with all the possible footage/bite to prove their point. but how can hirani defend that contract which is anyway so unfair. this is the real issue…read this…
