If not, read on. Its one of our favourite Ray films starring Uttam Kumar. If you haven’t seen it yet, do watch. BTW, what are you doing till now if you haven’t seen Nayak!

So, its easy to connect Satyajit Ray and Nayak. But Shah Rukh Khan ? Well, courtesy some Pillai who thinks “its screaming to be remade into a film with Shah Rukh Khan”. There comes BLASPHEMY! BLASPHEMY! Aren’t there better ways to suck up to the stars ? Here’s what he tweeted after watching the film..

But what else can you expect from the editor of the most expensive and glossy toilet paper roll! Well, there are better ways to connect the two. Click here to read a post by Gobbledyspook who connects the Nayak with the superstar!

And now back to bengali cinema. There is more to the Nayak story! Click on the play button to catch the promo of a new Bengali film called Autograph directed by Srijit Mukherjee. It completes the circle and looks interesting. The film stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Nandana Sen and Indraneil Sengupta.

And here is the official synopsis of the film…

Calcutta , 1966.

An iconic Director collaborated with the greatest Superstar of Bengal … And a Classic was born.

43 years later, the film changed three lives forever.

Arun Chatterjee, the reigning matinee idol of the Bengali Film Industry.

Shubhobroto Mitra, an aspiring director who wants to remake Satyajit Ray’s Nayak with Arun as the lead.

Srinandita Sen, an idealistic theatre actress and Shubho’s live-in partner who gets cast as the journalist in the film.

“ Autograph ” charts the journeys of these three lives, as they bond and  separate through time and space, in two intertwining narratives.

That is…till their final tryst with destiny.

Autograph is about stories. Reel and real.

Autograph is about dreams. Converging and diverging.

Autograph is about ambition. That creates and destroys.

Fun, was it, Mr (stars ke) Pillaai? No wonder he went block, block, block! And where was the mention of Ms Balan before? Anyway some things are best left untouched… Like Nayak & Filmfare!

I guess Mr.Pillai is screaming to tell the world that he is SRK’s pet poodle, so he says that Nayak is screaming to be re made with SRK, but he does not realize that would have those who have seen Ray’s movies screaming at him.

Now Pillai realizes that his screaming will make others screaming, so in order to stop the screaming, he throws in another tweet, this time for Scent of a Woman, with Naseer, but it only makes people scream on him.

Oh man Pillai, what a Scream Fest you kicked off there.

My problem is why do we need to remake two classics in the first place. Do they need a fresh viewpoint? If the same material can be looked at freshly then only a remake is justified. One good example is The Departed vis-a-vis Infernal Affairs. Other than that I don’t see any reason for two very good films which are very much available on VCD/DVD to be remade. And I am sure if SRK stars in Nayak the film will end with he walking off with the journalist to a Sufi-rock soundtrack.

We already had one terrible remake of Devdas. And no need to mention what RGV did to Sholay.

But again i ask the same Question, are we so much out of stories that we need to remake older movies. Just look at you around- Bhopal, the Naxal issue, the Kashmir crisis, the CWG scandal, the Naga blockade, damn you have stories all around you waiting to be told, and all you can think of is remaking some older movies.

Nayak is the only Satyajit Ray movie that I could sit through. In fact, I loved it. And I believe ShahRukh fits into the bill perfectly in such a role. He may not be the best of actors, but he is definitely a good actor who chose to become a star. Not many get that kind of choices to make either. But I dont think that the directors that SRK choses to work with will be able to handle such a kind of movie. Someone like Zoya might be able to handle such a movie. But there is no point in remaking it. Nayak, even today looks a lot refreshing movie

The glass wall, Satyajit Ray’s Nayak, and meeting Shahrukh Khan!

He has written so much better than what the bollywood can ever attempt at remaking the classic.

IMHO, Shahrukh Khan & his fans should read it and better be satisfied with it, only!
