NFDC Screenwriter's Lab

NFDC Film Bazaar 2016 officially announces Call for Entries for the 10th Co-Production Market from filmmakers with compelling South Asian stories seeking co-production, financial and artistic support.

Date : The applications will be accepted from May 23 until July 11, and with late fee until July 25, 2016. The final selection would be announced in September 2016.

The Co-production Market, which is one of the main segments of the NFDC Film Bazaar, is held between 20 – 24 November in Goa.

Selection : 20 remarkable South Asian stories will be selected this year. Projects get to pitch their film to the Indian and international film community that attends Film Bazaar with a focus on fiction features.

The pre-requisite of submission states that the project can be from any country dealing with a South Asian theme, must have a producer and director attached with 25% of the finance in place. In addition to the above the project must have scope for international co-production, distribution and sales.

Film Bazaar : Open Pitch, a unique platform, was created last year to increase the visibility of projects. During the Open Pitch, selected participants have a chance to present projects including mood books, trailers or any other visual reference.

Last year 384 meetings were scheduled for 19 projects over four days of the market. The duration of each meeting was 20 minutes. The CPM team provided individual support and set up meetings based on requests received from delegates and the availability of the two parties. (Pre-FB and during FB).

Nineteen projects were selected to participate in the Co-production Market 2015, including films such as Bombay Rose directed by Gitanjali Rao, Manto directed by Nandita Das, Agra directed by Kanu Behl, Pirates by directed Ritesh Raj More and produced by Ritesh Batra, A Goat’s Life directed by Fahad Mustafa (of Katiyabaaz fame),Newton directed by Amit V Masurkar (of Sulemani Keeda fame) and produced by Manish Mundra, Drishyam Films, Memories and My Mother (Bengali) directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta (Labour of Love fame)

Past success stories: A few notable films that were represented at the Co-Production Market over the years are Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court, Aushim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely, Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni’s Deool and Highway, Mostofa Farooki’s Television.

The 18th edition of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is open for entries now. The biggest film festival in the country, MAMI is looking for Indian as well as International films in the competitive and non-competitive section.

1Aza9iZzThe festival also has a new logo this year. The 18th edition of the fest will run from 20th to 27th October 2016.

There are 3 categories in the competitive section.

  • International Competition

    The section is a prestigious platform that shines a spotlight on new cinematic voices. It is open to debut filmmakers from all over the world who have films made within one calendar year of the festival.

  • India Gold

    India Gold is a competition section for the Indian feature films. Through this section, the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival With Star showcases breakthrough contemporary Indian films produced in India this year and provides them a platform for promotion internationally.

  • Dimensions Mumbai

    Dimensions Mumbai is a short film section that focuses on the young filmmakers of Mumbai. The section screens short films from local filmmakers under the age of 25.

For Indian Entries – For a film to be eligible as an Indian entry, the director or one of the directors must be an Indian citizen, AND at least one of the producers of the film must be an Indian citizen. Please note that both criteria need to be met for eligibility.

WHAT : NFDC Film Bazaar 2015 is calling for entries for the third edition of Producer’s Lab, a training platform introduced in 2013 to help emerging producers cultivate a sense of vision and learn the art of balancing the creative and financial aspects of filmmaking.

WHEN/WHERE : This year, the NFDC Film Bazaar will be held from November 20-24, 2015 at the Goa Marriott Resort alongside the International Film Festival of India 2015.

DEADLINE : The deadline for submission of application is 30th September 2015.

LAB : Multiple sessions on the different facets of producing films are conducted by key industry experts and professionals at the lab which is aimed at providing training and networking opportunities to upcoming Independent Producers from across the world.

FEES : The application fee for the Producers’ Lab is INR 25,000 (Rupees Fifty Thousand). Only applicants who have been shortlisted to participate at the Lab will need to pay the fees (which excludes cost of travel and accommodation, but includes the registration fees for Film Bazaar). NFDC will intimate the shortlisted applicants via email by the end of October 2015.

QUALIFICATION : Applicants should have worked as Producers or Line/Supervising/Executive producers in either one of the following and completed the same: Feature-length film | Short film | Documentary film | Television Commercial | Television Serial. The Lab is open to applicants from across the world but they should be proficient in English.

HIGHLIGHTS :

The highlights of Producer’s Lab 2014:

In 2014, Kirsten Niehuus, Managing Director, Film Funding, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Isabel Davis, Head of International, British Film Institute discussed the dynamics of public funding in and co-production with Germany and the United Kindgom, respectively. Viola Fugen, Head of Co-Productions at The Match Factory conducted a session on working with international co-producers and brought in her perspective of what an international co-producer looks for in a project creatively. Also present at the Lab was Marco Muller, the Artistic Director of Rome Film Festival who conducted a session on the importance of film festivals and how they can shape the journey of a film.

Another session, focusing on newer modes of engaging audiences through non-conventional platforms, was conducted by Aanchal Bahadur, Youtube Partner-Manager at Google India and Manan Singhi, Head of Music Partnerships, Youtube — India & South Asia. Pratiksha Rao, Head of TV & Entertainment, Twitter was present to speak about newer, more creative ways of reaching audiences through Twitter and the power of storytelling that transcends duration and medium of exhibition.

The 2014 edition of Producers’ Lab also witnessed sessions on film marketing by Rudrarup Datta, Head of Marketing and Operations, Viacom 18 India and on content creation for youth audiences by Ashish Patil, Business and Creative Head, Youth Films, Brand Partnerships, Talent Management, Yash Raj Films.

NFDC Film Bazaar

NFDC Film Bazaar, 2015, is calling for entries for the Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab and the Viewing Room (VR). This year, the Film Bazaar will be held from November 20-24, 2015 at the Goa Marriott Resort, alongside the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2015.

Films previously in the Work-in-Progress Labs at Film Bazaar have had their world premieres at leading international films festivals, often winning awards as well as enjoying successful theatrical runs.

WIP Labs

– Submissions are invited for the two WIP Labs: WIP Fiction and WIP Documentary.

– In each WIP Lab, upto five projects in their rough-cut stage will be selected for mentoring and presentation to a panel of international film experts.

– The WIP Documentary Lab is only accepting feature-length creative documentaries in the rough-cut stage, aiming for a theatrical release.

– Feature-length films of any genre in the rough-cut stage are invited to apply to the WIP lab.

Viewing Room

– Films of all genres and lengths, in rough or final cut, are invited to apply to the Viewing Room where films seeking finishing funds, world sales, distribution partners and film festival exhibition are presented.

– The Viewing Room hosts individual computer terminals in private booths, where investors, world sales agents and film festival programmers attending the Film Bazaar can watch submitted films via specially designed software. This allows them to contact the director or the producer directly through email.

– Feature length films in the rough cut stage are eligible to apply to both WIP Lab and Viewing Room.

– This year, NFDC Film Bazaar has introduced an Early Bird Deadline of 10th September 2015 for application to the WIP Lab and Viewing Room, which offers a discount on application fees.

DATES : Entries will be accepted from 19 June, 2015, and submissions close on 31 July, 2015.

HOW : 20 remarkable South Asian stories will be selected this year. Projects get to pitch their film to the Indian and international film community that attends Film Bazaar with a focus on fiction features.

– The pre-requisite of submission states that a film project must be an original story with a South Asian connect and must have a producer attached with 25% of the finance in place.

– In addition to the above the project must have scope for international co-production, distribution and sales.

-The ninth edition of Film Bazaar organised by National Film Development Corporation will continue to provide intensive individual support to selected projects in a creative and informal setting at Goa Marriot Resort in Goa (India) from 20-24 November, 2015.

– Film Bazaar is organised to discover, support and showcase South Asian talent and content. The aim is to boost collaboration in the realms of filmmaking, production and distribution between the South Asian and film fraternities of the world.

– The forum will be organised a day prior to the start of the Co-production Market and will allow selected participants to pitch their projects to noted industry professionals attending the market. This enables participants to effectively use their time during the one-on-one meetings for more in-depth discussions focused on project specific needs and negotiations.

Call For Entries

We all know that Mumbai Film Festival struggled with sponsorship last year. But it also managed to get the best desi films in recent years – with Court winning the International Competition, and Chauranga and Killa making mark in Indian categories. The International Competitive section for debut features always attract good films because of the big prize money it has.

New Board

The festival has a new board in place now. Film critic and author Anupama Chopra is the new Festival Director and filmmaker Kiran Rao is the new chairperson. Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapoor, Ajay Bijli, Manish Mundra are on board too and were present during the unveiling of the new logo. Anurag Kashyap, Farhan Akhtar, Vikramaditya Motwane, Riteish Deshmukh, Deepika Padukone and Anand Mahindra are also associated with the fest.

The fest will run from 29th October to 5th November this year.

WHAT : Experimenta – the International festival of moving image art in India seeks artists’ films and videos that challenge popular and conventional modes of cinema. Abstract to obscure compositions that extend the parameters of the mediums of film are welcome.

Preview copies must be submitted for selection purposes.

DURATION : All lengths of film are considered. Please submit entries as soon as possible. 
 
DEADLINE : The deadline for receipt of submissions is 1st August 2015

screenwriting-215x300WHAT : Manish Mundra’s film production company, Drishyam, in partnership with Sundance Institute, is organising Drishyam – Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2015 to be held in Goa April 12-16.

The Drishyam Sundance Screenwriters Lab will provide an opportunity for writers to develop their work under the guidance of accomplished international advisors in an environment that encourages storytelling at the highest level. Srinivasan Narayanan, the former Festival Director of Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) will be heading this initiative in India.

The Lab is inviting applications as part of its Open Submission Process.

LAST DATE :

The deadline for submission of scripts is March 5, 2015.

ELIGIBILITY :

– The Lab is for filmmakers making their first or second narrative feature;

– Co-writers, writer/directors, or writer/director teams will be considered, and the scripts should be independent in terms of story and spirit, and also in terms of budget.

LANGUAGE :

The film can be in any Indian language. However, for the lab, the screenplay should be submitted in English only.

APPLICATION:

– In order to apply, filmmakers must submit a complete draft of a screenplay as well as supporting materials (cover letter, artistic statement, bio, synopsis, and directing sample if applicable).

– There is no word limit or format requirements.

– Directing sample, if any, should be submitted as an online link
