Rima Das’ Village Rockstars Slated for Nationwide Release

Filmmaker Rima Das’ National Award winning film Village Rockstars is slated for a Pan-India theatrical release on 28th September, 2018.

The film will be released through VKAAO, a joint venture of PVR Pictures and Bookmyshow in metros cities of India and in more than 30 screens in Assam through Kamakhya Films.

Village Rockstars is the story of Dhunu, a girl who grows up in poverty and learns to fend for herself. However, that does not prevent her from following her dream of forming a rock band and owning a guitar someday. Most of the cast members of the film are non-actors including Rima Das’ niece Bhanita who plays Dhunu and the other kids who hail from Das’ native village in Assam.

The film which had its World Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and India Premiere at Mumbai Film Festival 2018 has screened in more than 70 prestigious international and national film festivals and won 44 awards including 4 National Awards (Best Feature, Best Editing, Audiography and Child Artist)

It was an official selection at Film Bazaar Recommends (at NFDC Film Bazaar 2016), 2017 Marche du Film (Cannes) Work-In-Progress, San Sebastian International Film Festival 2017

Rima Das’ debut film as a writer-director-producer, Man with Binoculars (Antardrishti) premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2016. Village Rockstars, her second feature, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2017 under Discovery Section. Bulbul Can Sing made its World Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2018 and will make its South Asia Premiere at the prestigious 23rd Busan International Film Festival 2018.

After having its premiere at Cannes Film Festival, doing the international fest rounds, and bagging the National Award for Best Punjabi Film, Gurvinder Singh’s Chauthi Koot has finally released in India.

Official synopsis : Punjab. The mid 1980s. A train journey to Amritsar. A dog that barks. Unwelcome guests late in the night and early morning. Dilemmas and fears.

‘Chauthi Koot‘ is Singh’s second feature after ‘Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan‘. Based on the short stories of Waryam Singh Sandhu, it’s a reflection on the undercurrents of the 1980s in a fear ridden Punjab post the Bluestar.

Thithi’s Limited Release Expands To Four More Cities This Friday

Raam Reddy’s much acclaimed debut feature, Thithi had its initial run in Bengaluru and few more cities in Karnataka. And this friday (3rd June, 2016), the film expands to four more cities – Mumbai, Delhi/NCR, Pune and Chennai. The film will play with English subtitles.

The film bagged the National Award for Best Film in Kannada this year. Last year, it also won two Golden Leopards at the Locarno Film Festival.

According to official release, Thithi is a realistic, light-hearted Kannada-language film about how three generations of sons react to the death of their patriarch, Century Gowda: a locally renowned, highly cranky 101-year-old man.

After doing the festival rounds and bagging a bunch of awards, Raam Reddy’s Thithi has released in the country. Though it’s a limited release in Bengaluru, Mysore, Hubli, Mandya as of now. Check the enclosed pic for show timings.

The film has released with English subtitles. If it gets a good response in limited release, hopefully we will be able to see the film in other cities too.

Kamal Swaroop’s cult classic Om Dar B Dar has been restored and will have a release on 17th January, 2014. PVR Director’s Rare in association with NFDC is doing the release. Don’t miss this film. A new trailer of the film is just out.

As Om rides a bicycle, scissor-legged, the landscape (Pushkar-Ajmer) resounds with distinctive voices: his father’s rebellions against the world, his ‘bold’ sister, her gentle suitor, the searching eyes of the runaway actress, the local businessman trying to protect the diamonds he has shat…the rebellion of the tadpoles. The filmmaker takes on the frightening, beautiful energy of adolescence – to joyfully shake open the landscapes of his own childhood, unearthing, and mixing politics with mythology and techno music with biology for Alchemy.

Director’s statement:

I was assistant on Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. The scale of production had made extras of large sections of the population of Delhi: the whole exercise had become an army operation, and we the big general’s lieutenants, the ring master’s sidekicks, arranging those masses on the sides of the roads so that the story of Gandhi could walk and blossom forth. The tear in the upholstery of my hotel room chair became a glad reminder of human life as I knew it. Inspired by the missing piece of cloth, I began spinning a parallel story about a town I grew up in and an adolescent who rode his bicycle scissor legged. The story grew and wanted to take on the larger production within which it was incubated. The boy therefore had to be called Om.

Ashim Ahluwalia’s film Miss Lovely is finally all set to release on 17th January, 2014. For its domestic run, the makers have released a new trailer of the film.

The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain regard section and it stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Niharika Singh and Anil George.

Set in the lower depths of Bombay’s “C” grade film industry, MISS LOVELY follows the devastating story of two brothers who produce sex horror films in the mid-1980s.

A sordid tale of betrayal and doomed love, the film dives into the lower depths of the Bollywood underground, an audacious cinema with baroque cinemascope compositions, lurid art direction, wild background soundtracks, and gut-wrenching melodrama.

UTV to release Hansal Mehta’s Shahid

Aha, finally the good news. Hansal Mehta’s Shahid has been acquired by UTV and they will soon announce the release date. Hopefully the film should be out in theatres in next few months. The film marks Hansal’s terrific comeback after a long time and Raj Kumar Yadav is so effortlessly good that he makes you believe that he is the real “Shahid Azmi”. The film has been doing the fest rounds for quite sometime now. Do watch it when it releases.

UTV really seems to be going in right direction with the perfect balance of masala and non-mainstream films. First, Ship Of Theseus, then The Lunchbox and now, Shahid. I would say i wouldn’t mind the assault of the big budget braindead star vehicles as long as they keep on balancing it with some sold small and good films. And hopefully other production houses will follow them.

Pairon Talle, written & directed by Sidharth Srinivasan, will finally have a theatrical release in India on 5th October. The film is released via PVR Director’s Rare.

To quote from the official release, it tells the story of a simple watchman, who is so devoted to protecting his master’s property, that he has lost the very ability to safeguard himself. When realization of his enslavement finally dawns on him, it does so at a bloody price. Will the watchman take destiny into his own hands or will justice be denied him forever?

The stark contrasts of the rapidly urbanizing NCR (National Capital Region) provide the violent backdrop to the film – this is a Delhi you’ve never been shown before.

– It stars Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Saba Joshi, Avtar Sahni and Geeta Bisht in lead roles.

– The film received the prestigious Hubert Bals Fund from Rotterdam Fest and it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.

Finally! It’s been a long wait for Ashvin Kumar’s film, The Forest. It stars Jaaved Jaffery, Nandana Sen and Ankur Vikal and is all set to release on 4th May under PVR Directors’ Rare. The makers have just released a new poster for the film which is quite striking.

Kanchivaram will have a pan India release, finally!

KanchivaramWho says National Awards don’t matter! It does, atleast to few. And things do change accordingly.

After bagging two national awards (best actor & best film) for Kanchivaran, the makers of the film Percept Picture Company are now ready to have an all India release of the film on 30th October. Almost 2 years after its completion. If am not wrong, earlier the film had it release in Chennai only.

Directed by Priyadarshan, the film is a must watch! If for nothing else, watch it only because of Prakash Raj. What a powerful and moving performance. Saw such acting after a long time. And he looks so so differnt in real life!

Priyadarshan wanted to make the film nine years ago but had no takers that time. Mohanlal was suppose to star in it. But when Priyan got producers for the film, Mohanlal was busy with other films. And so Prakashraj came onboard!

All you who crib about not getting to see regional films, dont miss it this time. And here is a trailer of the film…
