(FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DEL FILM DI ROMA)

Calls for Entries in all categories for 2014.

DATE : The 9th Rome Film Festival will be held from October 16-25, 2014.

SECTIONS :

Artistic Director, Marco Müller has announced the following sections for the 9th edition of the festival:

1) New International Cinema | Cinema for Today
A selection of a maximum of 14 feature films of young or already successful directors. The Festival will give priority to feature films that are world premieres.

2) Gala
A selection of some of the year’s most important films, for a maximum of 11 titles. Only feature films that are world premieres, international or European premieres will be considered for selection.

3) Mondo Genere
A selection of 7 films belonging to different film genres. Only feature films that are world, international or European premieres will be considered for selection. The Festival will give priority to feature films that are world premieres.

4) Prospettive Italia
This section aims to highlight the new trends in the Italian cinema. It will present a selection of maximum 8 feature films. Only films presented as world premieres will be considered for selection.

AWARDS :

– Each of the sections carries a People’s Choice Award based on the majority of the audience’s preferences, along with 4 Lifetime Achievement Awards assigned by the President and the Board of Directors.

– In addition to this, TAODUE International Jury will assign the TAODUE Award for first or second film, whereas DOC.IT Association will give out the Prospettive Italia Award for the Best Italian Documentary.

– Films will also be offered the possibility to participate in The Business Street (October, 17-21), Rome Film Festival program dedicated to the circulation, acquisition and sale of audiovisual products

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA :

– Rome Film Festival will only consider feature length films as submissions.

– All submitted films must be recent productions completed not prior to Monday 1st December 2013.

– They must not have been presented in any other format or length, not even as works-in-progress, for submission to previous editions of the Festival.

– With the exception of Out of Competition films, under no circumstances may films that have had prior public screenings, have participated in other international festivals or are available on the Internet, be presented at Rome Film Festival

SUBMISSION

To submit a film to the selection, one has to fill out a pre-selection entry form on the official festival website after which the preview DVDs should be sent to Deepti DCunha, the India Consultant to Artistic Director, Marco Müller.

– The DVDs should reach her before 10th August 2014 as the Artistic Director will be visiting India for selections.

– Filmmakers with films in post-production are requested to contact Deepti.

– In 2013, ‘Rangabhoomi’ by Kamal Swaroop had its World Premiere at the 8th Rome Film Festival and Amit Dutta’s ‘The Seventh Walk’ was the closing film of the CinemaXXI Section. There was a Special screening of ‘Om Dar B Dar’ by Kamal Swaroop on the occasion of 100 years of Indian Cinema. Prantik Basu’s ‘Makara’ was in CinemaXXI competition.

PVR to release Kamal Swaroop’s cult film Om-Dar-Ba-Dar

Kamal Swaroop’s Om-Dar-Ba-Dar can be called a cult film in its truest sense. And that too underground one. Because most people have heard about it but have not seen it. Finally, here’s the good news. The film has been digitally restored and PVR Directors Rare is going to release it on 17th January, 2014. So all of you who have so far only heard about it, here’s the chance to watch it on big screen. The film stars Anita Kanwar, Aditya Lakhia, Lalit Tiwari, and Gopi Desai.

The restored print was screened recently at Rome Film Festival. An avant-garde work, this is much more than a film. It’s like an installation collage art which uses various elements – from history to mythology, and politics to philosophy, to create a fascinating new world on screen. And he made brass band cool much before Anurag re-discovered it in Dev D.

The Seventh Walk (Saatvin Sair) by Amit Dutta will be the closing film of CinemaXXI, the programme section which the Rome Film Festival (November 8-17, 2013) dedicates to new trends in international cinema. The latest film will be screened Out of Competition.

Dutta, who graduated with a degree in film directing in 2004, captured the attention of international critics early on, winning important acknowledgments for his short films, starting with the FIPRESCI award which he won in 2007 in Oberhausen for To Be Continued (Kramasha). Several of his works have also been screened in the most important museums in the world, including the Tate Modern in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In Saatvin Sair, he continues to explore a theme that has distinguished his production since the very beginning, the relationship between film, painting and music. In the film, Dutta tells the story of a wandering painter who heads into a forest after noticing a strange footprint and hearing a strange melody. This walk into the depths of nature will lead him to face his most intimate self.

SYNOPSIS

THE SEVENTH WALK / SAATVIN SAIR by Amit Dutta, India, 2013, 70’

The extraordinary landscape of the Kangra valley, which Amit Dutta had already filmed in Nainsukh (2010), is the setting once again for the latest film. But whereas Nainsukh was based on the artistic history of an XVIIIth century painter whose work was figurative, Saatvin Sair is inspired by the works of a contemporary Indian artist who paints abstract landscapes, giving free rein to the imagination, as is customary in the modern Western tradition (oil on canvas).

In the film, wandering through a forest a painter sees a mysterious footprint and hears the strains of music, which lead him deeper into nature in pursuit of its source, hoping that it might lead to his innermost seeking. As he wanders, he rests under a tree; in his sleep he sees himself walking, painting, stones defying gravity, a small girl taking the sky-route to deliver his daily fruit and milk, seasons changing and years passing. He wakes up and walks into the landscape made-up of his own paintings where the object of his quest might await him.

Amit Dutta

Born in Jammu (India) in 1977, he graduated in 2004 with a degree in film directing from the Film & Television Institute of India. Since the earliest days of his career, his films – in which he associates the painterly image with the cinematic image – have been acclaimed by critics and won many awards: four national prizes, including a “Rajat Kamal” and the National “John Abraham” Prize (Federation of Film Societies of India), the FIPRESCI (International Film Critics Award) at the Oberhausen Film Festival, the Golden Mikaldi in Bilbao, the Golden Conch at the Mumbai Festival. His first feature-length film, composed of three episodes, The Man’s Woman and Other Stories (Aadmi Ki Aurat Aur Anya Kahaniya, 2009), won the Special Jury Mention at the 66th Venice International Film Festival. In 2010, he made his second feature-length film, Nainsukh (2010), and in 2011 he filmed The Golden Bird (Sonchidi), all presented in Venice in the Orizzonti section. Dutta teaches at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad and at the Film & Television Institute of India. The Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou have held screenings of several of his short films.

Rome Film Festival has announced its first list of selection for this year. It includes two interesting films from India.

Rangbhoomi by Kamal Swaroop and The Seventh Walk (Saatvin Sair) by Amit Dutta have been selected in the CinemaXXI section of the fest.

I have always believed that Amit Dutta is country’s best experimental filmmaker who has a distinct strong powerful visual style. Though you will hardly get to read about him or his films in mainstream media, it’s heartening to know that he quietly keeps on making films.

The CinemaXXI section is dedicated to new trends in world cinema and will feature 16 Feature films, 6 Medium-length films and 13 Short films.

Kamal Swaroop’s Rangbhoomi is in competition in the CinemaXXI section of the festival. The film is based on the autobiographical play written by Dadasaheb Phalke, considered as the father of Indian cinema.

Amit Dutta’s The Seventh Walk will be the the closing film of CinemaXXI Section and is not in competitive section.

The festival will run from November 8 to 17, 2013.

UPDATED (26th Oct, 2013) – Rome Film Festival has added two more Indian films in its list.

– MAKARA by Prantik Basu, India, 2013, 20’ (World Premiere) in the Medium Length and Short Film Competition

– OM DAR BA DAR / I AM DOOR BY DOOR by Kamal Swaroop, India, 1988, 101’. Special Screening of the World Premiere of the restored version, on the occasion of the 100 Years of Indian Cinema.

Apart from these two films, Indian filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia will also be at the fest as Jury member on the CineMAXXI.

Fest Dates – The 8th Rome Film Festival will run November 8 – 17, 2013.

Basic Criteria – Only films that will be world premieres at the festival will be considered for selection.

SECTIONS –  The Official Selection will present two competitive sections for International films

1) International Competition (16 films, presented as world premieres)

2) CinemaXXI (21st-century Cinema, a selection of films devoted to new trends in world cinema, which will welcome feature-length and short films presented as world premieres)

– Last year, ‘Tasher Desh’ by Q and ‘The Museum of Imagination’ by Amit Dutta were the films from India which had their world premieres in the CinemaXXI Competition Section.

AWARDS – The festival will give out more than 12 awards for World Cinema.

– Last year, more than 2500 members of the major press and media and more than 800 professionals from all over the world attended the event, which will take place in the screening venues of the renowned Auditorium Parco della Musica, the multi-functional public complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. CinemaXXI program will be hosted in the nearby MAXXI, the National Museum dedicated to contemporary creativity, designed as a multidisciplinary space by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid.

– Films will also be offered the possibility to participate in The Business Street (November 13-17), Rome Film Festival program dedicated to the circulation, acquisition and sale of audiovisual products, which will be hosted in the area of Via Veneto, the famous street of Rome that was portrayed in Fellini’s classic “La Dolce Vita” and it is known all over the world for its cafés, restaurants and shops. The Business Street offer includes screenings reserved for industry professionals, buyers and sellers.

They must not have been presented in any other format or length, not even as works-in-progress, for submission to previous editions of the Festival. – Rome Film Festival now has a new artistic director, Marco Mueller (who used to head the Venice fest) and they are introducing some new categories and going for a makeover.  Scroll down for all the details.

– DATES : The New redesigned 7th Rome Film Festival will take place from November 9 – 17, 2012 and will be a ‘World Premiere’ festival with a selection of around 60 world premieres. There will also be a focus on new trends in contemporary cinema in a New Competition section called Cinema XXI (21st-century cinema)

 – NEW SECTION : Cinema XXI (21st-century Cinema) focuses on works that “reflect the continuous reinvention of cinema on the contemporary visual scene,” and will host a competition showing feature films, medium-length features, and short films, for a maximum of fifteen films.

– The Official Selection is composed of an International Competition, a choice of films Out of Competition, and two additional competitive showcases: CinemaXXI (21st-century Cinema) and Perspectives Italy.

– The Rome Film festival will give out more than 12 awards for World Cinema.

 – The 7th Rome Film Festival is now open for Entries.

– Eligibility Criteria: All film submissions must be recent productions completed not prior to November 30th, 2011, and they must not have been presented in any other format or length, not even as works-in-progress, for submission to previous editions of the Festival. Exceptions may be made only for films presented exclusively in their own country of origin. Works previously presented in competition or out of competition at other international festivals or shown on the Internet will not be considered for selection.
