A in IIFA is NOT for Amitabh anymore!

It was film industry’s inside joke. IIFA – The International India Film Academy, yeah, it’s made to sound too pompous, but actually the A in IIFA is all about Amitabh (Bachchan and family). Nobody knows what actually the Academy does or how it’s even an Academy ? Just to make it sound authentic like the Oscars, an event management company decided to do yet another Bollywood awards and formed the Academy.

It roped in Amitabh Bachchan as its Brand Ambassador. Yes, an awards ceremony with an actor as the brand ambassador. Is that first of sorts ? Will someone please care to enlighten us ?

Not very long ago Vikram Bhatt wrote a cover story on HT Cafe asking about IIFA’s aim “to promote Indian cinema globally”. What has it done in the last ten years ?  And how it was promoted “Indian cinema” ? It goes to those countries where NRIs would pay obscene amount of money to see their favourite stars do chiggy-wiggy and it’s all strictly Bollywood.  There is nothing “Indian cinema” about it.

Like every other awards in this country, stars go, dance, get awards, get money and come back. Last year it was in Sri Lanka. Amitabh Bachchan went there to announce it but skipped the main event. And not only him, the entire Bachchan family skipped the IIFA for the first time. It was all about Raavan factor. Many groups were against Bachchan’s participation in the Sri Lanka IIFA and there was a fear that Raavan might face more backlash. Click here to read all about “Raavan” factor.

And today, in reply to a fan’s query, Bachchan posted the following tweet about this year’s IIFA at Canada..

And the worst part, he re-tweeted another tweet posted by some Praveen Kumar –

@SrBachchan WAT? u not at IIFA?? wats iifa without u???where can i contact those IDIOTS(iifa organisers) please

Well, that’s an old trick. Instead of expressing your concerns directly, express it through someone else. You are endorsing it but indirectly. In reply, IIFA has also issued a clarification from their side..

Due to unexplainable reasons, after announcing the event Brand Ambassador, Mr. Bachchan couldn’t participate in the IIFA Weekend Sri Lanka last year. Following this, IIFA aborted the concept of a Brand Ambassador. Keeping in mind the huge respect that Wizcraft and IIFA have for Mr. Bachchan and the deep relationship that we’ve always shared, we are not having anyone replace Mr. Bachchan. The Bachchan family has been an intrinsic part of IIFA every year, and in this regard we have already shared with them a proposal about their participation this year too. Mr Bachchan’s reason for non-participation is best known to him. IIFA and Mr. Bachchan are inseparable. We will continue to pursue his participation for this year too.

You don’t need to be too smart to read between the lines. Abhishek’s career is going nowhere. Aishwarya doesn’t have much films in hand and if they entertain only the Bachchans, they cut out the rest of the industry. The scenario might have been different if Raavan, KHJJS, Guzaarish and Action Replayy had turned out to be hit. But when you can get Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan to dance and make some more money, why would you settle for just the A or the B.

One more film awards ? NO! But we are different. SO ? Everyone says so! Am sure that must be the initial reaction after you read the header of the post. But just give me few minutes and let me try to explain it once. If you like it, great. And if not, that’s ok.

Ask yourself –

Q. Do you have any respect for any of the current hindi film awards ?

Q. Do you even know how they are selected ? Who votes for whom and who is selected how ?

Q. Do you remember who won what awards in which year ?

If answers to all the questions are in negative, and if you are branded as a cynic for wondering why we don’t have a single credible film awards in the country, then let’s join hands and try to do something.

Honestly, we all know that the film awards in our country are just “tv shows”. The tv shows needs TRPs and so they need stars.  Event companies get involved, they are asked to get the stars, and its all about the negotiation power of the star. Every year new categories are added to suit the need of the “star”. Debutant, Best comic role, Best villain , Best Jodi of the year, Best Jodi of the decade,  Hottest couple, Best Child Artist, Power List Topper and blah blah blah. You name it and they have it.

There are awards by film magazines, production houses, movie channels, event management companies and some more. Scratch the surface and you get to know everything. Every year they come out with their nominations, we read and crib, they host the awards, we see and crib some more and then forget it completely.

It started in the same manner this year. Nomination lists of awards came out and we started cribbing about it. Only difference, the platform was new – Twitter. Nikhil Taneja suggested that we should try to do something. Enough of cribbing! Is it possible ? Yes, let’s give it a try.

Some of us came on board and we started discussing the Do’s and Don’ts. It all emerged from Tweet-discussions A twitter handle ( @twi_fi_awards) was created and more debates and discussions followed. Someone suggested the name TwiFi Awards and others loved it. TwiFi ? Twitter Film Awards. The idea is use to the vast and unique platform of Twitter and get everyone involved to spot the best of the cinema talent.

And everyone agreed that let’s keep it free, fair, independent and most importantly, Transparent. Whatever we do, should be visible to everyone….who is voting for whom and who is getting how many votes.

But who will decide ?

A. To filter out the best from the rest, a Jury consisting of country’s top critics and bloggers will vote to select the nominations.  Critics because they see almost every film and you may agree or not, but their opinion matters. And bloggers because they do it just for the love of it. So if we get the best of the both, we might be heading in right direction. Also, the jury for music nominations is different.

To read the full list of critics who are on jury, click here. You name them and they are there! Bet you won’t be disappointed.

Once they submit their nominations, we will compile it all and put it out for voting. And everyone can vote. All you need is a twitter account.

Q. Who will decide which blogger will vote ?

A. Everyone. We asked people to nominate their favourite bloggers by just tweeting his/her name to the official account (@twi_fi_awards). Believe it or not, we got names of 70 bloggers to be part of the jury. Pavan Jha designed an application where people can cast their vote to select their favourite blogger. Voting is still open. Click here and access it through your twitter account. And to keep it transparent, your vote will appear on your Timeline too. ( We are not storing any data. Its used only for the purpose of voting)

And if you have any more doubts, click here to know all about the TwiFi Awards.

We are not sure where and how far we will reach, we are not even sure if we are heading in the right direction. But one thing is for sure – we are trying to make a change. And the intention is entirely honest. Only because we are sick, bored and tired of “tv shows” masquerading as film awards.

About 1500 people on Twitter, more than 500 on FB, about 30 critics, 70 bloggers and some 800 voters have already joined us. Will you contribute too ?

Let’s give cinema a chance.

Or you can go back and cheer for Golmaal. Or may be you can try and crack this puzzle – Omkar Das Manikpuri ( Peepli Live) is nominated for Best Performance In A Comic Role.

Since the trailer of 7 Khoon Maaf came out yesterday, we have been playing it in loop. All for Darrling – the killer combo of  Rekha Bhardwaj and Usha Uthup’s voice. The song is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and it seems there is more to the Darrling story.

It might be little too early to predict anything because we haven’t heard the full song yet.  But from whatever is there in the promo, it sounds similar to a popular Russian song called Kalinka.  And since there is a Russian actor (Alexander Dyachenko) in the film too, its easy to connect the dots. Or may be its part of the narrative and comes along with the character (Vronsky – Oh yes! Its a Russian name) he plays. The visuals in the trailer also suggests the same.

Click on the play button to hear Kalinka…from 4:00 onwards its almost the same tune.

And here is the 7 Khoon Maaf tariler…

To know more about the Kalinka song, click here.

Also, if its in public domain (folk songs) and has been reproduced many times in different versions, then there is no issue in using the tune. But if the case is different, then it might be plagiarism. According to wikipedia, it was composed in 1860, and so  most probably its in public domain and can be used. Or may be they have taken the rights. We are desperately waiting for the full song and the story behind it.

Tip – Sahil Rizwan.

If only Ashutosh Gowariker stops taking himself so seriously, the world would have been a better place to live. Ok, thats called exaggeration. But yes, he might get his mojo back. Last night Ashutosh Gowariker was online, through the twitter account of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. One of us tweeted and asked him for Refund. And this is what he replied…

You are asking for a refund?? It is like asking for a refund from the revolutionaries who gave their lives for you!!

Woohoo! As if Gowariker is going to donate all the collections from the film to the families of freedom fighters. And dear Gowariker, if you think there is nothing wrong with KHJJS, then all the best.

On his Facebook wall, Anurag posted this message yesterday –

See Chittagong, a far superior film made on the same subject as KHJJS.. At 1/8 th the cost, far superior actors and immense passion.. Producers decided to sit on it, because of a phone call from someone, Because that someone was trying desperately to save his son’s career..welcome to bollywood, where whose son you are… outshines all the hardwork and passion and potential and talent. KHJJS came and went, now what.

And if its true, then its not the first time. Remember how AB Sr. put out all the congratulatory smses that people smsed him for Abhishek, in full page advertisements after the release of Guru. And for Raavan, he put the blame on editing.

Mumbai Mirror picked the info from Anurag’s FB wall and carried this news today. And according to Mirror, Amitabh Bachchan reacted to it saying its incorrect and baseless.  Click here to read the report that The Telegraph carried in 2007 about Shonali Bose’s film. It seems Naseeruddin Shah and Jaya Bachchan were interested in it. One more Bachchan ? Wah, what an irony!

Shonali’s film Chittagong is directed by her husband Bedabrata Pain. It stars Manoj Bajapayee and Raj Kumar Yadav ( LSD).

Two news items from Vidhu Vinod Chopra Productions. First, his much ambitious Hollywood debut Broken Horses is NOT happening.

He set up an office in LA, did recce for the film and even put out a video of it on his official website. But now it has been shelved. The main reason seems to be the problem in getting the cast onboard. Because in Hollywood, the rules aren’t the same. Though there was some buzz about Mickey Rourke and Nicholas Cage doing the film but it seems it all just buzz.

But an official release from Vidhu Vinod Chopra Productions states that Broken Horses is very much alive, and presently in its pre-production stages.

And the second news – Sharman Joshi has finally bagged a big film. The next production of Vidhu Vinod Chopra – Ferrari Ki Sawaari in which Joshi will play the lead actor. The film will be directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, a long time associate of RajKumar Hirani. According to official release, its a heartwarming tale of how the pursuit of an Indian cricket legend’s Ferrari makes a young boy’s dreams of playing cricket at Lords a reality.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajesh Mapuskar have co-written the script and dialogues are by Rajkumar Hirani. The shooting will start in February and it will release next year.

Because we surely are trying our luck.

And you just have to write 140 characters. Ok, its even less than that. Its Tim Burton’s Cadavre Exquis ( or Exquisite Corpse) – a technique used to collectively tell a story. Each contributor adds to the story in sequence, building on the last line revealed. This is part of Tim Burton’s movie celebration at Toronto International Film Festival.

All you need is a twitter account. And you have to contribute just 127 characters. Because #BurtonStory = 13 characters, is a must with every tweet.

And here are the basic details –

  • This story telling experiment runs November 22 – December 6, 2010
  • Tweet as often as you like
  • The best Tweets of the day will be selected to build the story
  • All selected Tweets can be viewed under “All Submissions”
  • Follow the story as it unfolds on the “Read the Story” tab
  • Inappropriate submissions will be blocked

And the opening line of the story is – Part 1 “Stainboy, using his obvious expertise, was called in to investigate mysterious glowing goo on the gallery floor #BurtonStory”.

So, what are you waiting for ? Click here and start writing.

WHAT : This initiative, focusing on a different region every year, operates in two modes. On the one hand, Open Doors co-production lab brings professionals from the chosen region together with potential partners, mostly from Europe, to foster support for projects that would otherwise be difficult to make. Every year, following a call for submission, the Festival selects new projects from the chosen region, which will be presented during the Open Doors co-production lab.

At the end of the workshop, the winning project will receive either development or production support.

On the other hand, especially for the public audience, the Open Doors Screenings: a non-competitive section of films particularly representative of the cinematographic and cultural universe of the chosen region. This year the Open Doors section is dedicated India.

HOW : Open Doors 2011 is the result of a two-year collaboration with the Film Bazaar India/Goa Festival’s Screenwriters’ Lab, instigated with support from Nina Lath Gupta, managing director of the Indian national film promotion office (NFDC). During the last two editions of the Locarno Festival, a total of 12 Indian screenwriters have participated, and been able to present their work-in-progress to a range of film professionals from all over the world, all under the aegis of the Binger Filmlab.

WHO : Three Indian experts will work with the Festival on the Open Doors 2011 program: Sunil Doshi, Meenakshi Shedde and Uma Da Cunha (consultant).

The final short-listed applicants (a dozen in all) will be invited to participate in the co-production lab to take place during the 64th edition of the Festival del film Locarno (3-13 August 2011).

WHERE : Indian projects can be submitted to Open Doors 2011 via the Festival website: www.pardo.ch.

DATES : The 64th Festival del film Locarno will take place from August 3rd to 13th, 2011. The days dedicated to the Open Doors co-production lab will be from the 6th to 8th August, 2011. The deadline for the submission of projects is set on March 13th, 2011.
