The first trailer of Raju Kumar Santoshi’s Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani is out. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. From the promo, we could not make out anything “Ajab” or “Ghajab”. Looks usual run of the mill romantic comedy with all the bolly masala.

She came, she conquered and she went back! She came back, a forgettable film Sorry Bhai, and has been since missing. As they say, every actor and director got atleast one classic film in their lifetime. And the worst is if it turns out to be your first film or if it comes early in your career. We hope its not true for her, and for Hazaroon Khwashein Aisi!

So where is she and is she upto these days ? A new film titled 2 Days 2 Nights  and a morning by Sudhir Mishra. Check out this interview by CNN IBN’s Rohit Khilnani.

The first song of Sujoy Ghosh’s film Aladin is out. Its called the Genie Rap. Music is by Vishal Shekhar. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Ritesh Deshmukh and debutant Jacqueline Fernandes. The film’s release has been postponed from 23rd October to 30th october. Check out the song.

DD@50 : Those were the days!

doordarshanNow it seems impossible. At a time when we have more than 100 channels, to imagine a world with only one channel and that too in B&W! Transmission would start only by 7 am and then the Doordarshan logo will slowly unfold in its own lazy pace. The only pause button was “Rukawat ke liye khed hai” We all loved the line, but hated it whenever it would appear on screen. Am still not sure who wrote the copy.

Chitrahar, Chanakya, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Buniyaad, Circus, Intezaar, Vikram Betaal, Faster Fene, Nukkad, Fauji, Flop Show, Ramayan, Mahabhaat, Alif Laila, Spiderman, Discovery Of India (Bharat Ek Khoj), Karamchand, Surabhi, Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne, Mirza Ghalib, Rangoli…the list is too long! The faces are still fresh. Growing up was so much fun!

We were a generation DD-addict! Saw everything that was shown on DD except late night “vyaskoon ke liye” movies. That wasnt allowed at home. Managed to catch it few times at a friends place when his family members were out on vacation. I even used to watch “muk-badheroon ke liye samachar” on sunday afternoons, with an excuse to learn sign language. The obsession was so much that at a point I used to remember the day of the week by the name of the show/soap. If last night Chitrahar was on air, then it must be thursday today. Rangoli used to be the only reason to wake up early on sundays. Still remains the best show on musical countdown. One topic, and songs from almost every era!

And then one day, the Raj Kapoor’s hit song came on air…pyaar hua ikraar hua, pyaar se phir kyun darta hai dil! Liziye Deluxe Nirodh! The word wasnt in our dictionary then. What was it ? The ever curious mind fuelled by the raging hormones tried hard to figure that out and finally it did. The song never remained the same. Doordarshan wasnt just a channel then, it was a way of life. A member of family, almost every family. Too many stories, nostalgia never ends.

The money is here, techonology all around but where is Mirza Ghalib ? Will we ever get another Naseeruddin Shah on tv ? The Big B’s and the Small D’s would come and go, get the eye balls and make bank balance. Thats it. But there is some hope, thank god for  youtube! Everything is not lost.

BTW, if you are wondering why this rewind button all of a sudden, here is the info that triggered it…

On September 15,1959, the Delhi Television Centre went on air for half an hour, three days a week and inaugurated by Sh. Rajendra Prasad, President of India from Vigyan Bhawan. It’s 50 years of Doordarshan!

Saw Salma Sultan (without the rose though) on CNN IBN and NDTV today at prime time bulletin. Aha…pure magic! Remember DD news ? She still has that calmness on her face. And that charm! No shouting, no barking like today’s news anchors!

Here are the two of my all time favourite songs from good old DD days.

Road, MovieFinally, here comes Desi Cinema Paradiso. No, make that Cinema Para-desi!

The first trailer of Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie is out. The film stars Abhay Deol, Tannistha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik. The screenplay was selected for the L’Atelier section at the Cannes Film Festival 2006. Its having its world premiere at the ongoing Toronto Film Festival. Deol plays a truck driver who makes a life changing journey across India as he hits the road with  a travelling cinema.

And here is the 2min trailer..

And the synopsis of the film..

A young man’s journey into the unknown becomes the odyssey of a lifetime.

Vishnu, a restless young man, comes up with a plan to save his father’s faltering hair-oil business. It’s madness: an excursion into the unknown, driving an old, decrepit lorry across a harsh but stunning terrain.

His personal journey becomes an odyssey across the mythical Indian landscape as he discovers he’s transporting not just a battered vehicle, but an old touring cinema.

The expedition takes on carnivalesque proportions of endurance as Vishnu confronts a young runaway, a wandering, old entertainer with a bear, a beautiful gypsy woman, corrupt cops and a notorious water-lord.

The key to his freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two 40-year-old film projectors that lie inside the bowels of the lorry. Like “1001 Nights” if the films are good he gets to live and move on, otherwise he faces death in the isolated countryside.

The road trip is to change the life of each of the travellers, especially that of Vishnu, who discovers life, love and laughter along the Indian highway.

But why is the video so unimganitively done! And those words on screen, kabhi hai kabhi nahi!

And here is the best thing about the album. The music is by Shankar Ehsaan Loy but the song Iktara is composed by Amit Trivedi ( Aamir and Dev D). And with just one song, Amit kills it! If you havent heard the song, click the play button. Sung by Kavita Seth and Amitabh Bhattacharya. The second video has the full song.

Who said monologues are boring ? May be not, when its George Clooney! The first look of George Clooney’s new film Up In The Air is out. Check it out!

Also posting a clip from the film and an early review by popular blogging site slashfilm. The film is directed by Jason Reitman ( Juno & Thank You For Smoking).

And click here for review.

Unnaipol OruvanIts 50 years of Kamal Hassan, on screen! And these days he insists on playing atleast 50 roles in each film of his. They even say, to call him megalomaniac is an understatement! In an interview, when Naseerduddin Shah was asked about his reaction to Kamal Hasaan playing his part in the tamil remake of A Wednesday, he said – why my part ? He should play all the parts! 😉

Jokes apart, this one looks sane. The trailer of the tamil remake of A Wednesday is out. The film is titled Unnaipol Oruvan and stars Kamal Hassan ( In Naseeruddin Shah’s role) and Mohan Lal ( Anupam Kher’s role). We feel its looking better than the hindi one and hopefully they have cut out the dhoom-dhaam-dhadap camera, sound and edit pattern in this one.

BTW, Kamal’s daughters are also involved with the film. Shruti Hassan has composed the music for the film and Akshara has choreographed a promotional video. And Kamal has sung two songs in the film!

ChintujiRemember those days of IN & AS! When the opening credits of the film would roll with the lead actor’s name and it would come with the title of the film.

When I heard about the film Chintuji (yes, thats the title), I thought the same. Rishi Kapoor IN & AS Chintuji! And yeah, it stars Rishi Kapoor. Am sure there are not many actors who have the luck to have a film by their name or nickname and then get to star in it too!

We love nicknames, or as well call ghar ka naam or kaccha naam. Some of us even have more then one ghar ka naam! Bollywood is no different and the names sound all weird and funny. Bebo, Chi Chi, Lolo, Guddu, Duggu, Chinki, Bonny, Faffy! But then, whats the point of a nickname if it doesnt sound funny and if you dont want to hide it from others! Ghaar ka naam bus ghar ke liye!

My all time favourite nicknames are Chenta and Penta. Chenta was a friend in school and his brother was called Penta. Poor souls, we used to harass them a lot. Though he tried his best and kept on denying that his name was Chenta. He said it was Chintoo and his brother was Pintoo. But who would listen ? And where is the fun in Chintoo-Pintoo ? The false one became a real name and Chenta-Penta had no choice but to accept it!

Nicknames dont have reason or logic. But it seems Chintuji’s nickname has a story behind it. When Rishi Kapoor was born, his brother Randhir Kapoor used to recite a riddle.

Chote se chintu miyaan, lambi si poonch,

jahan jaye chintoo miyaan, wahan jaye poonch! Bujho to jaano ?

Its a needle and thread. And because of this riddle, Rishi Kapoor was nicknamed Chintu. What a prick! Is that the reason why Rishi Kapoor can be so rude and can fire you for ringing him on his mobile – How can you call on my mobile ? Huh!

The film Chintuji is about Rishi Kapoor, an actor who loves Legs & Pegs and has political ambitions. Its directed by Ranjit Kapoor, writer of films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (D), Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na (D), Bandit Queen (D), Mangal Pandey (D) and Halla Bol (D). ( D- Dialogues)

And here is the most interesting bit. If am not wrong, Ranjit Kapoor must be bollywood’s oldest debutant in recent times. We always joke about it, who will break the record! VBala, you listening ? The competition is getting tougher. First it was Pradeep Sarkar (Parineeta) at 52. Then Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial debut (Yun Hota To Kya Hota) at 56! And now its Ranjit Kapoor at 61!! Or may be as Dharam Paaji said, its not about age, its about mileage!

Click the play button to check out the theatrical trailer of Chintuji. Produced by Bobby Bedi, it releases this friday.

Whatever that means! Blue stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif. The film is positioned as India’s first big budget underwater film and has music by A R Rahman. The first song promo of the film is out and its by Kylie Minogue. Check it out.
