3 IdiotsIts one of the most anticipated films of the year! And finally here is the first look of the film! The trailer of Rajkumar Hirani’s Three Idiots starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi & Boman Irani. The film is produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

Earlier a 10 second teaser was leaked out. Now here is the full 90 seconds trailer. Enjoy!

And if you missed it earlier, here is the story/plot/synopsis of the film…..

Two friends embark on a request for a lost buddy. On this journey they encounter a long forgotten bet, a wedding they must crash and a funeral that goes impossibly out of control.

As they make their way through the perilous landscape, another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend–the irrepressible free- thinker Rancho[Aamir Khan], who in his unique way, touches and changes their lives.

It is a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho college romance with the spirited Pia [Kareena], and his clash with an oppressive mentor[Boman Irani].

Finally, in misty mountains of unparalleled beauty, the friends[R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] find the key to the secret that they seek.

3 Idiots is a comedy of ideas that is as provocative as it is funny, as wildly entertaining as it is insightful. A laugh-riot that talks about the most important of human pursuits: self-actualization.

Fruit&Nut-1Funny man Kunal Vijayakar turns director with this week’s release Fruit and Nut. The film has Cyrus Broacha, Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar and Dia Mirza in the lead and is produced by Studio 18. Some early reviews…

Taran Adarsh (Indiafm)– Director Kunal Vijaykar tries hard to keep you entertained, but the writing is just not captivating. Sure, you do laugh at a few jokes/situations, but there are times when the jokes aren’t too funny and also tend to get repetitive. On the whole, FRUIT & NUT has some funny moments, that’s it! A film like this holds very limited appeal – 1.5 / 5

Anupama Chopra (NDTV) – Vijaykar and his actors are straining too hard to make you laugh at jokes that are simply too flimsy for film. It’s exhausting more than entertaining. See it if you must – 1.5 / 5

Sukanya Verma (Rediff) -My advice, skip the movie, buy the chocolate. It’s good. It’s fun – 1/ 5

Anand Vaishnav (Buzz 18) – Fruit & Nut would have been a brilliant two minute spoof on TV. But when stretched into a two hour film, it runs out of steam. This chocolate doesn’t have a sweet enough aftertaste – 2/ 5

Gaurav Malani (Indiatimes)Kunal Vijaykar’s 5-minute Fully Faltoo series on MTV was funnier than this entire excuse for a film. Teaming up with Cyrus, he makes a bakra (scapegoat) of the audience. Fruit and Nut is cheesy filmmaking. In a nutshell, this is fruitless entertainment – 1.5 / 5

Nikhat Azmi (TOI) – Neither fruity nor nutty, this film ends up as a total squish. After an unfruitful watch, you feel completely let down since the film boasts of a Still from Fruit and star cast that includes most of the contemporary funsters of the entertainment industry – 1.5 / 5

Kaveree Bamzai (India Today) – Unfortunately, the writers seem to have exhausted themselves thinking of the funny names and the interesting premise. There is nothing beyond it, except for two senseless item songs, one each for Irani and Mirza to stretch their legs – 1 / 5

Rajeev Masand (CNN IBN) – Despite juvenile jokes like peeing on open electric wires, Fruit & Nut is mercifully not the sort of vulgar comedy we’ve got used to seeing at the cinemas these days. It’s best suited for those who don’t have a problem with silly, childish humour – 1.5 / 5

Well, this friday Cyrus & Kunal dont have to look out for bakras. They need to look in  the mirror!

The first look of Shyam Benegal’s new film Well Done Abba is out. The film stars Boman Irani, Minissha Lamba and Samir Dattani. The film was recently screened at Montreal Film Festival and will have its next screening at London film festival. Its written by Ashok Mishra and is based on two short stories – ‘Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi’ by Jeelani Bano and ‘Phulwa Ka Pul’ by Sanjeev.

And here is the synopsis of the film….

Armaan Ali, played by comic hero Boman Irani, is a middle aged driver for a city executive. He takes a month’s leave and, when he arrives back at work three months later, his boss, understandably, threatens to sack him. To save his job, charming Armaan spins a fabulous story of why he was delayed in getting his daughter married.

Fable or truth, the boss isn’t quite sure, but the story revolves around a central question – how a well, once dug, can be stolen? Unearthed in Benegal’s part comedy, part political satire, is a hilarious and poignant depiction of the double dealing and corrupt middle men intrinsic to Indian rural politics. Meanwhile, at the heart of the story is a delightful romance between Armaan’s daughter and a young, honest mechanic who saves the day.

Kunal VijaykarGot some exclusive dope on directorial debut of Kunal Vijaykar. Read on to know more.

Kunal Vijaykar, the funny foodie man is not so happy these days. His directorial debut Fruit and Nut is ready for release since quite some time but the producers ( Studio 18) of the film are not at all happy with it. They can’t make out head or tail out of it. So Kunal has been asked to re-edit the film to make some sense out of it. Also, its release has been postponed to next year. No date has been fixed.

Fruit and Nut stars Cyrus Broacha, Boman Irani & Dia Mirza. Its written by Sharat Kataria, dialogue writer of Bheja Fry.

fruit n nutStory/plot/synopsis : Its a madcap comedy with a central character named Jolly Maker (Cyrus Broacha), who is a simple, hard working middle class struggling bachelor in search of love, money, friends and success. Jolly Maker works as a clerk in office of a greedy and corrupt builder named Khandar. He is typically nerdy, un-stylish, accident-prone and leaves a trail of disaster behind him.

One fine day in broad daylight, Jolly Maker’s beautiful, sexy, smart and snobbish colleague, Monica (Dia Mirza), gets mysteriously kidnapped. Through a roller coaster ride and series of comical mishaps, Jolly Maker finds himself in the middle of plot that has been hatched by an insane Ex- Maharaja (Boman Irani) to destroy Mumbai!! Whether the poor, adorable, accident-prone Jolly Maker finally falls in love or not, gets his girl or not and above all is able to save Mumbai or not, makes for rest of the film.

Ashutosh GowarikerAccording to reports in today’s Mid-day, director Ashutosh Gowariker was damn pissed off at the IIFA Awards (Macau) because Boman Irani and Ritesh Deshmukh took dig at many actors and films while hosting the awards.  On stage, he also questioned how Priyanka Chopra can win the Best Actress Award for Fashion.  The links to the stories are here and here. And we are ROFL since we read these two reports. Why ? Read on, a letter to Mr Gowariker.

Dear Ashu,

Hope you dont mind it. Calling you Ashu. For us and many others, this whole award business is a big farce. Only three kind of people attend the awards – 1) Those who are going to win 2) Those are going to make money by performing some naach gaana 3) Those who don’t have any kind of work.

Mr Gowariker, is this something new to you ? Something that you don’t know ? Itsn’t it all a big joke and simply money making business ? Otherwise why would an award function will have a brand ambassador ? And that too Amitabh Bachchan.

Who handles IIFA Awards ? Its made to sound like some heavy film body  ( India International Film Academy or some shit like that)but at the end of the day its Wizcraft. Just an event management company! With just a single aim – Make money and more money! Indian cinema it isn’t. Its not even hindi cinema. Its just the popular hindi cinema. Films that are all about the stars. Nothing beyond that.

Dear Mr Gowariker, what are you cribbing about ? When you participate in such a farty show, you are part of the joke and when you are part of the joke, just shut up and laugh at the joke. You don’t have a choice.

And talking about wrong choices, did it bother you because Aishwarya Rai didn’t get it ? Or was it because Aishwarya Rai was the main lead in your film Jodha Akbar ? If you are so holier-than-thou, why not raise voice against all the wrong choices ? Why not boycott all the awards show ? Thats much better! The shows which still don’t bother to respect the talents but just the stars.

Its just a TV show, Mr Gowariker! Get it in your head. Or if its already there, stop pretending!

The more stars they get, more money they will make from tv rights. They have to do naach gaana and crack jokes to make it entertaining. That’s it. So WTF are you talking!

99 - film99 Film Review

There are films where you dont feel like entering the theatre post-interval. Not even with the caramel flavoured popcorn and coke. And this week’s release 99, directed by Krishna D K & Raj Nidimoru, is one such film. But in this case, the reverse is true. Its all about the second half.

After sitting through the boring first half, where actually nothing happens, its difficult to enter the theatre again for the 2nd half. (NOTHING means absolutely nothing ) Its all about set up in the first half.  Setting up the characters, their traits, locations and the back stories.  Its almost a never-ending loop. The same events again and again.

If you manage to sit through the 1st half, please make sure that you enter the theatre for the second half. Because the story moves in this half.

The year is 19-99. Two guys ( Kunal Khemu & Cyrus Broacha) with bad luck, who always get stuck at the crucial point before hitting the century, get into the messy business of cricket, betting and mobile rings. Its a con job with loads of fun, atleast for them.

And thats why the year ( 19-99) is significant. The year when mobile rings and betting scandals made the headlines. There is a great story idea there but the execution is so bad that everything seems dry and half-baked. Kunal and Cyrus, who end up working for the local don ( Mahesh Manjrekar) because of their bad luck, lands up in Delhi for some paisa vasooli. But its not what it seems, things go wrong, they meet the wrong guys and desperately look out for ways to get it all right. Enters Boman Irani and Vinod Khanna, the cricket maniac and the betting king!

Kunal-Khemu’s interaction with  Soha Ali(as hotel executive) is so amateurish that you will cringe at their every interaction. Its the same story with Boman Irani and his wife, who are trying to sort out their marriage issues, it again goes in circles, scene after scene, they talk the same shit.

Mahesh Manjrekar as the local don, Cyrus Broacha as Khemu’s partner in crime, and Amit Mistry as Kuber steal the show.

Watch it, because there is nothing else in the theatres. And dont worry even if you enter post-interval. Infact, you should pay half the ticket price and enter post-interval only. And yah, the delhi destiny song is the best thing about the film.

Rating – 2/5.

Btw, Rediff’s film critic Raja Sen makes his filmy debut with this one. He is credited with the dialogues alongwith two other writers. We wonder what happened to Raja’s great cinematic insights on film writing. And here is Raja Sen trying his best to sell 99. And Here is how he came onboard. Sencity is sin city now!

After Welcome To Sajjanpur ( WTS), Shyam Benegal is ready with his next film, a satire titled Well Done Abba. Its produced by Big Pictures and shooting of the film is complete.

It was earlier titled Abba Ka Kuan. But seems Big is following in UTV’s footsetps. Shyam’s last film was titled Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur and was later changed to Welcome To Sajjanapur for popular appeal.

Well Done Abba has Boman Irani in double role along with Minissha Lamba and Sammir Dattani.

The story revolves around Armaan Ali, a driver working in Mumbai. He takes leave for a month to find a husband for his teenage daughter, who lives in a small locality close to Hyderabad. Armaan Ali returns to work  after three months.  His young employer wants to sack him but is persuaded to listen to the reason why Armaan got so delayed.

The film is inspired by two short stories – ‘Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi’ by Jeelani Bano and ‘Phulwa Ka Pul’ by Sanjeev.  And Its WTS team again…screenplay is by Ashok Mishra, music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Ashok Mishra, Swanand Kirkire & Ila Arun.
