Because its not Agyaat!

And look at the irony! The man who went out to expose the media, got himself exposed! Courtesy writer Sonal Mehta.

First, lets kill the rumours. Sonal Mehta is no journalist. Was never a journalist. All you journos get you facts right! She comes from advertising background and has experience of more than ten years. She met Ramu and assisted him on James.

What we know – Here is the way Ram Gopal Varma works. He gets an idea and tells the same idea to 3-4-5-6 writers and ask them to write story/treatment. None of the two writers get to know that they are writing the same. It doesnt happen at one go. First one writer, then second, third and so on. Sometimes they get paid, sometimes they dont. Nobody knows the reason. May be he gets bored soon. He changes writers faster than his girlfriends!

Based on the treatment notes, Ramu decides which way to go. And he would suddenly call up the 7th writer and tell him the same one line and some more ideas from one of the treatments without telling the 7th writer about other six and their notes. This is not new.

We have been following Sonal Mehta’s case quite closely and here is all the dope that we got from our journalist and writer friends.

– After James, Ramu asked Sonal to work on his one line idea of media expose and all that holier than thou gyaan. She wrote the script. Ramu liked it.

– Sonal was told that she will direct it as well.

– Sonal’s script/film was titled Break ke Baad.

– She was even working from Ramu’s office.

– When she got to know about Rann, Ramu denied it first saying that its a completely new script. She was kept in the dark.

– When she confronted him again, he offered her to direct a new film. And that was the end.

Sonal Mehta went to FWA ( Film Writers’ Association). When the matter wasn’t solved there, she went to the court. And click here to know how the case was settled. Though our sources confirm that its not 55 Lakhs but the case was settled for 20 lakhs. Thats not bad too! And coming from Ramu, who is known to pay peanuts to his writers.

But Ramu is not happy with the way the producers have settled the matter. According to the official press release, Ramu states….

I hereby want to state that the Producers – Sheetal Talwar and Madhu Mantena have taken a decision to settle the dispute with that Mehta girl without my consent. The Honorable High Court has not passed any judgement or granted any injunction in the said dispute in any parties favour. As delaying the matter could cause irreparable loss to them they have taken this step to end the matter so that they can concentrate on release issues.

This settlement should not amount to any misconception that I was involved in the discussion regarding the same. I hereby by want to make it clear that Absolutely NO Credit will be given to her with regard to the story, screenplay or whatever of RANN.

I am hereby stating that I am just the Director of the film and the script has been written solely and wholly by Rohit G. Banawlikar and that Mehta girl is nothing but a fraud and a scamster and an opportunist. I will proceed with action on her to teach her and the likes of her a strong lesson as soon as I get free from my work.

Ramu ki dhamki!! Hmm. So why did the producers went ahead and settled the case out of court ? Well, simply because her case was stronger. Here is what she had with her…

– All documents proving every kind of official communication. Sms and mail exchanges between her and Ramu/his secretary/company.

– Comparative notes showing similarities between Rann & Break ke Baad.

– Letters from actors stating that she had narrated her Break Ke Baad script to them.

– No, she had NOT signed any contract and it worked her in favor. Beacuse mostly all the contracts state that in case of any conflict, all rights belong to the producer/director. So, even without the contract, she had much stronger evidences to prove her claim.

This is surely a landmark case. And when the other party is so strong. Not everyone manages to get their dues. Any knows what happened to Sajit Warrier’s case ? That was again Ramu!

So, all you writers, make sure that you don’t fool yourself. And if you are working with Ramu, make sure that save all possible evidences. Hope it never happens to you, but you never know! And if it happens, pray that you manage to get 20 lakhs!

Indiafm discovered this scoop. The poster of Phoonk 2 seems to be direct lift from the Korean film The Chaser. Have a look.

The film is directed by Milind Gadagakar, the writer of Phoonk. And here is the trailer of the film if you are still interested.

(PS – Do watch The Chaser. Its KILLER!)

We were feeling bit sad because it seems the copycats species was fast becoming extinct. Blame it on the new rules, hollywood studios coming to India, Rakesh Roshan-Ram Sampath case and many other reasons. Even Pritam has said no more copying. Anu Malik is long dead. But it seems all is still not well.

It was recently reported on www.itwofs.com and Mumbai Mirror that Lalit Pandit (of Jatin-Lalit duo) has lifted the tune of Pakistani singer  Fakhr-e-Alam’s song Husnwaalon se poocho, that was part of his 2001 album Falam Connection. Husanwaalon becomes dilrubaoon ke jalwe in Dulha Mil Gaya. And here are the two songs…

acid-factory-cut2Its not Unknown anymore! In this era of social networking, how do you expect to steal and run away. Acid Factory is directed by Suparn Verma and produced by Sanjay Gupta. Earlier we wrote about the Acid-Factory-Unknown plagiarism issue here. They set a new benchmark by even copying the trailer of the film!

Dear Guptaji and Vermaji,

Havent you heard “kanoon ke haath bahut lambe hote hain”. Its time to shut the dvd shop! Cntrl C + Cntrl V is getting too risky. Learn the other commands soon!

According to reports in international press, Simon Brand, the director of Unknown has got to know about the film Acid Factory, has seen the trailer and now is planning to take the matter to court and sue the makers of the film. You can read the reports here and here.

The reports are in French/Spanish, and if you are too lazy to do the translation, we have done it. But since its google translation, you might have to jumble few words here and there.

Director desolate with the copy that Indian industry has its ‘Unknown’, ‘Acid Factory’ is bet of the year.

You can change the actors, the title – by Unknown (Hollywood, 2006) for Acid Factory (Bollywood, 2009) – are still shots and sequences and a slight film draws up another success. The director of Strangers (in Portugal) is inconsolado with a new episode of shameless plagiarism of the Indian industry.

I was in shock,” said the Colombian director Simon Brand. “It took me a while to assimilate it, especially after seeing the trailer on the Indian tape. I found a copy that is identical to the point of stealing plans and entire sequences,” he said, desolate, the filmmaker. In 2006, in a discreet, left the film that told the story of five men who are in a factory without knowing who they are. This thriller is starring, among others, James Caviezel, Joe Pantoliano and Greg Kinnear.

Three years later, the streets of major cities in India are filled with posters for a big Bollywood production – a budget five times that of Unkown. Five men are in a factory without knowing who they are … The movie is signed by Sanjay Gupta, who perhaps should think three times before going through Hollywood – accuse him of, among the 13 films he has done, have made plagiarism by 95%.

The story is not new and even classics (Godfather, etc. ..) have been “adopted” by Bollywood, who does not pay a penny for the rights. “After the initial run, it is difficult to prosecute them,” says Brand. Acid Factory debuted there 15 days.

The other report has more details, including the director’s plan to sue the makers of Acid Factory….

In the United States has struggled to get into theaters, but in India is the big bombshell of the season. The streets of large cities have been papered indas for weeks with the announcement of the release of the film, while Hollywood was just one more. The American version is called ‘Unknown’ (2006). The Indian, ‘Acid Factory’. But this is not the story of a comparison, nor a remake, but of a plagiarism by any measure.

Simon Brand, director of the Colombian original version released in Spain under the title ‘blank mind’ with James Caviezel, Joe Pantoliano and Greg Kinnear as protagonistas’-heard the case a few weeks ago in Los Angeles, where he lives five years. It was told by her producer or his agent, but an Indian journalist who called him to interview him about it.

‘I was shocked,’ admits Brand. ‘It took me a while to assimilate, especially after seeing the trailer for the film in India. I found that is an identical copy to the point that they have stolen entire flat and take ‘.

And do not lie. It is true that the plot is the same-five men wake up locked in a factory, and none of them remember how they got there or who they are-but with Indian actors, produced by one of the directors of the highest reputation in his country, Sanjay Gupta, and the title changed to make it more attractive.

Then, according to criticism from several local media, the thriller is a chain of sequences copied frame by frame, of the Colombian film director. Some go further, asserting that the 13 films directed, written or produced by Gupta, 95 percent are exact copies of Hollywood titles or Korean films.

It seems that not alone and that plagiarism in Bollywood is already part of the culture of the industry. Crushing machine by the intellectual property rights have come films like ‘The Godfather’, ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’, ‘My friend the ghost’, ‘Sabrina’, ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’, ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ‘,’ The Fugitive ‘and’ Sleeping with the enemy ‘, to name a few of an endless list of titles of current and classic cinema.

But nobody could stop them. Even 20th Century Fox, which in May this year filed a lawsuit against the film by BR Films ‘Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai’, arguing that it is an exact copy of ‘My Cousin Vinny’, starring Danny de Vito and Marisa Tomei.

‘Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors’
Even Harry Potter has been victim of Indian intellectual property theft. ‘Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors’ is the Indian version of the character of JK Rowling, but so far have escaped any sanction despite the demand for Warner.

Now, two weeks after the release in India of ‘Acid Factory’, Simon Brand is expecting that the lawyers for the distributor of ‘Unknown’ in Asia to take action on the matter, while acknowledging that it will be difficult.

‘I talked to industry insiders familiar with the matter and tell me that when the film has already opened in the United States sue for plagiarism is complicated because it is a common practice in India’, says Brand, who claims to feel a ‘huge powerlessness and frustration “to see how he copied their work without receiving any reward for it. And that the Indian film was shot with four or five times more than his budget.

It has a director with his second film, ‘Paraiso Travel’, managed to beat all box office brands in Colombia last year and be compared with ‘Amores Perros’ and ‘City of God’. “The problem is that piracy was and is unstoppable, has Brand, who, despite everything, he dreams of making films of high power in India someday.

As Dhoni says in the Aircel tvc “Aur bolo” !

PaaOk, make that “almost” here! Because someone decided to have some fun by editing out just the last few seconds. Though the audio is very much there. Anyway, if you have been following Amitabh Bachchan’s blog and the wah-wahs that everyone is saying after watching the trailer, then you know why we are so curious! We might have to wait for one more day till we get to see the full trailer, till then have a look.

Paa is directed by R Balki and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan & Paresh Rawal. Music is by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

UPADTED – The full trailer of PAA is out today. Have a look.

Here’s one more tariler. Slightly different version of the first one.

And when Amitabh said Paa!

And as a friend said, Balki’s fascination with age factor continues. In Cheeni Kum, it was father-daughter-son-in-law mess with age. Here its father-son-son! Paresh Rawal is back again as the father!

In the film Paa, Amitabh Bachchan (Auro) suffers from a disease called Progeria, a rare genetic disorder in which a person ages three times faster than a normal person. Its a family drama in which Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan are parents to Amitabh Bachchan, their 13 year old son who looks 39, and its all about how they try to deal with it. The look has been designed after much research and the make up used to take almost 4-5 hours everyday. Strangely, the basic premise of Paa sounds similar to Francis Ford Coppola’s film Jack starring Robin Williams. Inspiration, plagiarism or just coincidence ?

Amitabh Bachchan starrer new film Paa is ready for release on Dec 4th. Its directed by R Balki and also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan & Paresh Rawal. Music is by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire. The first trailer of the film will be out on 6th November 2009. Till then its all covered up! Here is the first official poster of Paa!

Paa

Btw, click here for the official website address of the film. So far not much there but just a bit of Ilaiyaraaja’s music.

And if you are too curious to remove the carton from the pic and see how Bachchan looks as a 13 year old in 39 years body, click here.

JackThe movie is about a boy with a unique aging disorder: one that makes him age 4 times faster than normal. Movie picks up when Jack (Robin Williams) is 10 years old, but looks 40. He tries to go to public school for the first time, and tries to become friends with kids his own age. His physical appearance causes him lots of problems, however.

So, is Paa really Jack ? Inspiration, plagiarism or just coincidence ? Few more days and we will have the answer.

Lil late on this. Ok, quite late! Its been a while since the film released. A reader of our blog MM mailed us this pic, poster of Ram Gopal Varma’s Agyaat and of The Unborn. And he wrote that the only originality on the RGV poster seems to be a strategically placed text. As Asha-tai would say….Aur kya kahein, jaanam samjha karo!

Have a look.

Agyaat Unborn

UNKNOWN ??

acid-factory-cut2Acid Factory is the new film by journalist turned filmmaker Suparn Verma (Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena). In an interview to Hindustan Times, when asked about the story of Acid Factory, Suparn had to say this…

Sanjay Gupta is known to look towards foreign films for inspiration. So which one was the muse for Acid Factory?

Sanjay (Gupta) had this amazing story given to him by a writer about seven people trapped inside an acid factory. They’ve lost their memories and in the terrifying present have just realised that there’s a killer amongst them and two others are his intended victims. We wove the screenplay around it. The challenge was in shooting the film in sequence and extracting performances from the group as a whole and not simply from individual actors. Before shooting, I made my cast read out their parts in front of each other and that created a bond between them.

You can read the full interview here. For us, the most interesting part of the interview was the first line – Sanjay had this amazing story given to him by a writer. We would like to know who is the writer ? And why is the poor writer not given credit in the interview ? Strangely, even in the IMDB full credit list of Acid Factory, there is no mention of the writer, though it tells you who is the stunt double and even has 2nd AD’s name.

Coming from Sanjay Gupta’s factory, most probably the writer doesnt exist! Or its all UNKNOWN! Read Dvd, copy, plagiarism! Unknown ? Yes, thats the name of the film. We havent seen it but to quote from IMDB, here is the plot of Unknown.

UnknownFive men wake up in a locked-down warehouse with no memory of who they are. They are forced to figure out who is good and who is bad to stay alive.

OR

How would you feel if: You were tied to a chair, In a locked-down warehouse, In the middle-of-nowhere, With no recollection what-so-ever of what happened, or what didn’t. To add to it, you’re not alone. There’s 4 others in the exact same state of mind. Some responsible for putting the others there BUT no one knows who’s who. Thats how this movie starts, getting grittier with every passing minute.

Now, scroll up and read the plot in Suparn’s answer. It sounds suspiciouly similar to Unknown. And coming from sanjay Gupta, dil hai ki manta nahi!

The film stars Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajapi, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Diya Mirza, and Danny Denzongpa.

If you still have some doubts, check out the trailer of Unknown..

Gawd, even the trailer looks the same! And here is the Acid Factory trailer..

Are we jumping the gun again ? With Sanjay Gupta, who loves guns and bikes and babes, its justified! What say ? Or lets wait till this friday.

If Pritam is here, can plagiarism be far behind! Or may be, its just his bad luck. Some sound somewhere always sounds similar! Check out this song.

Vodpod videos no longer available.  more about “deewane tere naam ke – eSnips, share …“, posted with vodpod

Sounds familiar ? Saudagar. Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anupam Kher. Tring tring. Deewane tere naam ke!

Now, check out Love Aaj Kal’s Aahun Aahun, the intial hook.

The good news. In the CD, the credit reads  kadi te hass bol ve. Lyrics & melody – traditional.

And after lil youtubing, we discovered this one – one of the traditional punjabi folk version.

Finally, some sanity in Pritam’s world!

NDTV IndiaBecause he/she surely doesn’t understand any shit about entertainment news. Saw the Monday bulletin (13th July- 23:00) of Mumbai Central on NDTV India. The central theme – We copy reality show formats like we plagiarise hollywood films. Its the same story on big and small screen. Dude, its not! One is with proper license and the other is just copy-paste.

The big mistake – 90% reality shows on Indian television are NOT plagiarised. The format is owned by some foreign production house and its shot here with proper license. Its NOT copy-paste job as the scene is with our films and as NDTV India made it to be. Someone needs to tell this to the editor of Mumbai Central. Because the anchor Mayuri Dongre repeated the same lines some two hundred times in just 15 minutes. Yeh bhi churaya hua hai…isme bhi desi tadka laga hai bus…..hamara show kab aayega….kab hamara sar uncha hoga ?

Can someone explain it to me what and how is the logic of having sar ooncha ? These reality shows are popular in many countries across the world and its the same process everywhere. Someone designs the show, owns it, gives license to other parties and makes money. From Kaun Banega Crorepati ( Who wants to be millionaire) to Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao ( I’m a Celebrity…Get me out of here), every show is done after paying the license fees. Many times even the production house which owns the rights to the show are also involved in producing the show in other countries. So whatever NDTV India showed today at 23:00 pm on Mumbai Central, it was factually all wrong.

When it comes to entertainment news, they suck big time. The other day, a voiceover said Anurag Basu is the director of Black Friday! Anurag Basu ??!! Can’t they make out the difference between Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap ? And how it gets passed ? One person writes it, someone checks it, third person does the voiceover and finally a fourth one approves it. How come no one notices it ? Huh!

Hope the moron of Mumbai Central is listening! Otherwise, at this rate, NDTV India will soon become INDIA TV.
