And with this POTD we close the year and come to the end of “Best of 2011” posts. This sketch and the note that follows is by Sumit Purohit.

Every cinema buff loves to look back at the year that went by and comes up with his or her pick of best/worst films of the year. So here is mine. I haven’t watched all the films that released this year (and hence some might be missing from the list) but from all that I did, these are, for me, the fifteen important films from 2011 – the films I enjoyed, the films that I think did something new and different.

I resumed sketching this year with sketches inspired from films. And therefore what better way to share my favourite films from 2011 than visually.

Enjoy figuring out the films. I hope you can 🙂 And just in case you need help, you can check this link.

This has to be the height of cheap thrill. Hong-jin Na, director of the Korean film Chaser, is in Mumbai for the Mumbai Film Festival. And since he has no clue about our Bhatt Factory, which specialises in importing films from across the world to give it a desi makeover, our good friends Mihir Fadnavis and Sudhish Kamath decided to burst the bubble.

Murder 2 was copied from Chaser and so Hong-jin Na was gifted an “original” dvd of the “plagiarised” film.

Sumit Purohit, who has been doing some interesting sketch work based on films, also gifted him a sketch based on Chaser.

Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life is soon going to get a theatrical release in India. All thanks to PVR. And so, here’s something that you must know and remember if you are clueless about the film. If you know about the film, am sure you are all set to book your tickets.

This was put oustide an arthouse theater in Stamford.

(PS – We should have something like this for No Smoking. Right? Bipasha Basu’s item number has got nothing to do with the film. You can enjoy it on your tv too 😉

A thank you note – from Aron Ralston to A R Rahman.

Danny Boyle’s new film 127 Hours is based on the real life story of moutain climber Aron Raltson, who had to amputate his arm to save his life. And A R Rahman has composed the music for the film. Click here to hear the story of Aron Raltson in his own words.

POTD : When Dev D met Gulaal’s Dileep Singh

This one is strictly for the fanboys. And is posted by one such fanboy on Facebook.  Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap tweeted the pic today. So, here it is…we aren’t surprised because we knew about it. The scene is in both the films – Dev D and Gulaal. Have you noticed it ? If not, time to watch both the films again. For some cheap thrills atleast.

Not sure if we can call it POTD but since we dont have something called Letter Of The Day, so here it goes. And like million times before, thanks to our bolly-pedia Pavan Jha again for the tip. made our day!

It’s a letter from Sai Paranjpye to Ravi Baswani. And though it mentions the title of the film as Dhuan Dhuan, seems it was re-named later as Chashme Buddoor. Can anyone confirm? Read on.

Our heart skipped few beats. Sar pe wig aur haath me sitaar, kaisa hai yeh tera emosanal atyachaar! Wah wah! And it rhymes too.

Amar Singh goes for a complete makeover and is playing the role of a hindustani classical singer in a Malyalam film titled Bombay Mittayi (Or has it been changed to Mumbai Mittayi? Whatever) And sitting next to him is Dimple Kapadia who plays his wife in the film. What a jugalbandi!

Jaya Bachchan, Jaya Prada, and now Dimple Kapadia! Surely bald & pot-bellied men can also have some charm. BTW, we have one more query – are they gonna just sit like that and fake it all, or dance too? Imagine Amar Singh doing the Rishi Kapoor act in the song Jaane Do Na. Bet we will book our tickets now!

And its all for a good cause! Check it out.

It feels great to know that its not for the movie’s promotion. He is protesting against the construction of a massive dam in the middle of Amazon rainforest. Click here to read the full story.

In Bollywood, every cause comes with a new film release. Post-RDB, we know nothing about Aamir Khan’s take on Narmada Bachao Andolan. And bet with Peepli Live, we will be back to give us gyaan on farmers’ suicide. As the master wrote…Aife aife kaife kaife!

Trust Mid-day to spot what others dont! Here is the Pic Of The Day (POTD), Aamir Khan with his butt chair and his fingers doing the tricks. One up in the nose, the other down the base. Clicked during one of the promotional events of 3 Idiots.
