The original trailer of Shaitan is finally out. And it looks gorgeous! Check out.

The first trailer of Anurag Kashyap’s production Shaitan is out. Though Anurag  claims that this is not the final one, it’s been leaked out and even the font is different in the final trailer.

The film is directed by debutant Bijoy Nambiar and stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Kalki Koechlin in the lead.

The story is about Amy – Amrita Mathur. She is a 17 year old and has all the teenage angst and rebel attitude that go with that age. Amy makes some new friends in Bombay- the ultra rich KC and gang. One night of living on the edge ends up with them brushing against the law. A cop blackmails them to cover up the case. In order to pay up Amy stages her own kidnap with help from KC and gang. A simple plan which goes completely haywire forms the rest of the story. Intertwined with this we have a story of a cop – Tavde; who is put on the case to track Amy and the others. The cop is forced to deal with a personal crisis while he is on the case. How he manages to resolve it and simultaneously crack the case carries the story forward.

It’s been quite sometime since Tigmanshu Dhulia has been silently making movies but there is no news of the release dates. First Shagird, then Pan Singh Tomar and now he is busy with his next film. The first look of Dhulia’s Shagird has been released. It stars Nana Patekar, Mohil Ahlawat and kohl-eyed Anurag Kashyap.

The first trailer of Onir’s I Am is out. It stars Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Nandita Das, Rahul Bose, Sanjay Suri, Purab Kohli, Abhimanyu Singh, Arjun Mathur, Shernaz Patel, Radhika Apte, Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap.

I AM AFIA is the story of a single woman who feels her identity will be made whole through the singularly feminine experience of motherhood. I AM OMAR is a horrific tale of sexual discrimination; blackmail and prejudice is part of the torrid fabric. It reveals how the police use Article 377 (law under Indian Penal code which criminalizes homosexuality) to harass and blackmail gay men. In the current climate of media sensationalism, perhaps this story gains even more poignancy.

And having seen the film, we definitely recco this one. Our favourites – Afia and Megha. You don’t need a Lamhaa to know the Kashmir story, you can do it in a much simpler and better way, and without all the dhoom-dhaam-dhadaap. Megha proves that.

Afia is a story about unique friendship between two strangers. Nandita Das and Purab Kohli bring  such a natural charm to it, and bet you never knew that Anurag Basu can act too. Do watch.

Blame it on Ides Of March ? When we are wishing desperately that when we grow up just make us  Bhagnani, any Bhagnani, and Karan Johar goes for the reverse take!

Think about it – you can be a FALTU Bhagnani and still have everything you want. And we never expected that the one who are born with Khan, Chopra and Johar surnames in Bollywood would openly want to be Kashyap or Bhardwaj. They belong to the two extremes, their cinema and sensibility is different. My Name Is Johar And I am Not Kashyap or Bhardwaj ?

On a serious note, is Karan Johar serious about it ? As in, seriously serious ? One of the most powerful brands in Bollywood, if he is admitting that there is a shift in our cinema, you got to listen. To say the cliche, love or hate him but you can’t ignore K JO.

Or is it the effect of Ishqiya + LSD + Udaan + Peepli Live + Do Dooni Chaar + Band Baaja Baarat + Phans Gaye Re Obama + Tanu Weds Manu ?

Also, you may HATE his films, but there is no doubt he is easily one of the smartest guys around. May be, just next to Shah Rukh Khan. Just that their smartness doesn’t show in the choice of their films, whatever is the reason for that. Lack of talent, conviction, fear of failure or just opting for the easy route.

And here are some more priceless gems from him….( From Anupama Chopra’s show Picture This on NDTV. The topic of discussion was Bollywood discovers its roots. Vikramaditya Motwane and Habib Faisal were also part of the discussion.)

The english speaking critics were watching Dabang like they were watching a Tarantino film.

You have Kashyap as your last name so its all validated. If he was Abhinav Sharma, it was what he is making ? Oh he is Kashyap guy, so definitely he is intelligent. He is making fun of the genrae. He is having fun.

I want to change my last name. It will help a lot.

There is very strong credibility factor that people are aspiring to acheive as well. I have made so many films but none of them have got the credibility of say 3 crore net box office Udaan. I know that for a fact. And that credibility is paramount for a production house. While you want to make the money, you also want the respect. The combination of those two is 3 idiots.

You cant beat them, join them.

If only Ashutosh Gowariker stops taking himself so seriously, the world would have been a better place to live. Ok, thats called exaggeration. But yes, he might get his mojo back. Last night Ashutosh Gowariker was online, through the twitter account of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. One of us tweeted and asked him for Refund. And this is what he replied…

You are asking for a refund?? It is like asking for a refund from the revolutionaries who gave their lives for you!!

Woohoo! As if Gowariker is going to donate all the collections from the film to the families of freedom fighters. And dear Gowariker, if you think there is nothing wrong with KHJJS, then all the best.

On his Facebook wall, Anurag posted this message yesterday –

See Chittagong, a far superior film made on the same subject as KHJJS.. At 1/8 th the cost, far superior actors and immense passion.. Producers decided to sit on it, because of a phone call from someone, Because that someone was trying desperately to save his son’s career..welcome to bollywood, where whose son you are… outshines all the hardwork and passion and potential and talent. KHJJS came and went, now what.

And if its true, then its not the first time. Remember how AB Sr. put out all the congratulatory smses that people smsed him for Abhishek, in full page advertisements after the release of Guru. And for Raavan, he put the blame on editing.

Mumbai Mirror picked the info from Anurag’s FB wall and carried this news today. And according to Mirror, Amitabh Bachchan reacted to it saying its incorrect and baseless.  Click here to read the report that The Telegraph carried in 2007 about Shonali Bose’s film. It seems Naseeruddin Shah and Jaya Bachchan were interested in it. One more Bachchan ? Wah, what an irony!

Shonali’s film Chittagong is directed by her husband Bedabrata Pain. It stars Manoj Bajapayee and Raj Kumar Yadav ( LSD).

We posted this one earlier….Cameron Bailey on Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat. And then got to know that he has written about Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl In Yellow Booots too. For those who are still wondering who is Cameron, well, he is the Co-director of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

As India’s independent film movement surges, Anurag Kashyap is at the forefront of the action. His Dev D. stripped away Bollywood’s commercial sheen to reveal a generation of urban Indians as they are today: ambitious, exciting and international. That Girl in Yellow Boots takes a hard look at those South Asians who live in between worlds. A portrait of a biracial woman trying to find her place in Bombay, it is exactly the brand of urgent, passionate filmmaking that is transforming how we think about Indian cinema.

Ruth has spent enough time in India to know how to work the system, including how to manipulate the sleazy bureaucrat at the immigration office. With her visa extended, she returns to “studying massage,” which is really a soul-squandering job servicing men at a backroom parlour. Her boyfriend, Prashant, offers no rescue from the dangers of her work. In fact, his drug use, money problems and brushes with violent criminals put her in the way of ever-present harm. But Ruth puts on a tough face and braves the risks of her challenging, urban life for one deeply personal reason: her estranged father lives somewhere in the city. As she searches for her last remaining link with her family, she falls deeper into Bombay’s underworld. But a part of Ruth seems to embrace the danger. Kashyap shot the film in a mere thirteen days and it carries that anything-goes spirit. Finally here it is! The official trailer of Anurag Kashyap’s new film That Girl In Yellow Boots is out.

It stars Kalki Koechlin (as Ruth) alongwith Naseeruddin Shah, Prashant Prakash, Gulshan Devaiya, Shivkumar Subramaniam, Divya Jagdale, Kumud Mishra and Kartik Krishnan amongst others.

The film is going to have it world premiere at Venice Film Festival and then North American premiere at Toronto International Film Festival. Its written by  Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin. Music of the film is by Naren Chandavarkar and Benedict Taylor, and the cinematography is by Rajeev Ravi.  Check it out.

That Girl in Yellow Boots is a thriller tracing Ruth’s (Kalki Koechlin) search for her father – a man she hardly knew but cannot forget. 2009 – He scored a hattrick. Dev D. Gulaal. Paanch. Commercial success. Critical acclaim. And even his unreleased film Paanch found its way out.

2010 – He has done it again! Cannes. Toronto. Venice – A hattrick of different sorts !

Udaan @Cannes Film Festival – Vikramaditya Motwane’s debut film – a film which nobody was willing to back and was even rejected by UTV twice. Anurag decided to produce it himself and almost everyone branded it as a suicidal step. Na sex hai na star na Shah Rukh Khan! Well, the film still made it to the official selection of Cannes Film Festival and was one of the best rated films of the year.  Do watch it if you havent seen this gem yet! Whats more, it has even managed to recover its cost.

That girl In Yellow Boots @Venice/Toronto International Film Festival – It was the same story again. He was looking for 10 crore to produce three films (Udaan, That Girl In Yellow Boots and Tumbad) and the suited-booted MBA morons had the same answer – Its a suicide! Get a star and you can take 50 crore. Why only 10 crore ? When the marketing budget of the dud of the year Raavan is Rs 28 crore, what can you do in just 10 cr ? And so, Anurag decided to produce it himself again. Aah cinema. Ooh life! Being Uncompromised!

The film will have its world premiere at the Venice International film Festival. And will have the North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. To read more about the film and the fest, click here. Is this his career’s best year ? Seems so. We are not aware of any other such story.

For Udaan, UTV came onboard later on and it managed to reach the theatres and got the visibility it deserves. For That Girl In Yellow Boots, NFDC has come onboard. And if our sources are to be believed, his next production Tumhad has finally managed to get funding.

So, will the big boys of Bollylalaland finally sit up and look beyond the Kites & Raavans! Here is the so called cinema’s enfant terrible…give him few crore and some freedom, bet he will deliver more! As one of the popular campaign goes, we wonder, Next is what ?

And there is some more good news. Remember Amit Datta ? If you follow us on Twitter, we have been raving about his films for a long time. His new film Nainsukh has also been selected for the Venice Film Festival and will be shown in Orizzonti category. Cheers to good ol’ cinema!
