Film Heritage Foundation has announced its first major initiative to save India’s cinematic heritage – Film Preservation & Restoration School India – to be held from February 22nd -28th, 2015 at Films Division, Mumbai.

Film Heritage Foundation is a not for profit organization set up by filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur in 2014. Recognizing the urgent need to preserve India’s cinematic heritage, the foundation is dedicated to supporting the conservation, preservation and restoration of the moving image and to develop interdisciplinary educational programs that will use film as an educational tool and create awareness about the language of cinema.

This is a pioneering initiative of Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, Cineteca di Bologna and L’Immagine Ritrovata.

Film Preservation & Restoration School, India

– The school is set up in collaboration with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, Cineteca di Bologna, L’Immagine Ritrovata and FIAF.

– Date : It will take place from February 22nd – 28th, 2015 in Mumbai. This is a unique project that is being done in India for the first time.

– The purpose of the school is to address current issues surrounding film preservation and restoration including practical training of current restoration and archival best practices by a faculty that includes some of the leading international experts in the field.

– The week-long course itself will consist of lectures/presentations followed by interactive sessions with experts on film archiving and preservation from the foremost archives and studios around the world, screenings of restored classics and ten modules on film restoration including hands-on training in the latest techniques that will be conducted by a technical team from L’Immagine Ritrovata, a state-of-the-art film restoration lab that has restored landmark films of Chaplin, Fellini, Ozu and Ritwik Ghatak amongst others.

– Participation Fees : Rs. 50,000/- plus applicable service tax for Indian students. 1000 USD plus applicable taxes for overseas student. (The fee includes lunch and two tea/coffee breaks with snacks every day from February 23rd – 28th, 2015. The fee also includes a closing dinner at the end of the school)

– Scholarship : A few scholarships will be available for deserving students. Selected canditates will be notified.

– Selected applicants will have to start with online preparatory material that will be made available to them from January 14th – February 18th, 2015.

Given the colossal loss of India’s cinematic heritage and the fact that we continue to lose more of our cinematic history every day, this school is an important first step in our foundation’s long-term goal to create an indigenous resource of film archivists and restorers that will work towards preserving India’s cinematic heritage.

FILM PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION SCHOOL INDIA

– An intensive course including hands-on training in the latest techniques of film preservation and restoration by some of the leading international experts in the field

Indian Cinema – A Lost Heritage

– For a country that currently produces the largest number of films in the world — over 1700 films a year in 32 languages, our record of film archiving and preservation is abysmal.
– India made 1700 silent films of which only 5 – 6 complete films survive today.
– By 1950 we had lost 70 – 80% of our films including India’s first talkie Alam Ara
– No full-fledged film restorations have been done in India
– The school is the first step in the Film Heritage Foundation’s long-term goal to create an indigenous resource of film archivists and restorers that will work

PROGRAMME DETAILS

– The purpose of the school is to address current issues surrounding film preservation and restoration including practical training of current restoration and archival best practices.
– 40 students from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan will be selected on merit.
– The programme will comprise daily sessions from 9 am – 9 pm over 7 days including screenings, lectures and practical hands-on lessons.
– Course content will include modules on film comparing, film repair, film scanning, digital restoration, colour correction, sound restoration and film mastering.
– The faculty will comprise experts from Cineteca di Bologna, L’Immagine Ritrovata,  and the Film Foundation and filmmakers and guest lecturers from around the world.

– Applications are open to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Nepal.

CERTIFICATION

On completion of the course, participants will be awarded with a certification as the school is internationally recognized and under the patronage of FIAF (The International Federation of Film Archives).

FIAF brinsg together the world’s leading institution in the field of moving picture heritage, comprising more than 150 institutions in over 77 countries. FIAF members are dedicated to the rescue, collection, preservation and screening of moving images.

Viewing Room & WiP 2014

NFDC Film Bazaar 2014 is calling for entries for the Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab and the Viewing Room.

– For the first time at NFDC Film Bazaar, there will be two WIP Labs: WIP Fiction and first WIP Documentary. In each WIP Lab, four projects in their rough-cut stage will be selected to be presented to a panel of international film experts for their feedback. The newly introduced WIP Documentary will only consider creative feature length documentaries in the rough cut stage which are aimed at a theatrical release.

Submission deadline : September 30th 2014.

Film Bazaar Dates/Venue : November 20-24, 2014 at the Goa Marriott Resort alongside the International Film Festival of India 2014.

– Feature-length films of any genre in the rough-cut stage are invited to apply to the WIP lab.

The Viewing Room : will present films seeking finishing funds, world sales, distribution partners and film festivals to investors, world sales agents and film festival programmers attending the film bazaar. Here, films are viewed on individual computer terminals in private booths via a specially designed software which allows the users to contact the director or producer of the film via email. Films of all genres and lengths in rough or final cut are invited to apply to the Viewing Room.

Calls for Entries in all categories for 2014.

DATE : The 9th Rome Film Festival will be held from October 16-25, 2014.

SECTIONS :

Artistic Director, Marco Müller has announced the following sections for the 9th edition of the festival:

1) New International Cinema | Cinema for Today
A selection of a maximum of 14 feature films of young or already successful directors. The Festival will give priority to feature films that are world premieres.

2) Gala
A selection of some of the year’s most important films, for a maximum of 11 titles. Only feature films that are world premieres, international or European premieres will be considered for selection.

3) Mondo Genere
A selection of 7 films belonging to different film genres. Only feature films that are world, international or European premieres will be considered for selection. The Festival will give priority to feature films that are world premieres.

4) Prospettive Italia
This section aims to highlight the new trends in the Italian cinema. It will present a selection of maximum 8 feature films. Only films presented as world premieres will be considered for selection.

AWARDS :

– Each of the sections carries a People’s Choice Award based on the majority of the audience’s preferences, along with 4 Lifetime Achievement Awards assigned by the President and the Board of Directors.

– In addition to this, TAODUE International Jury will assign the TAODUE Award for first or second film, whereas DOC.IT Association will give out the Prospettive Italia Award for the Best Italian Documentary.

– Films will also be offered the possibility to participate in The Business Street (October, 17-21), Rome Film Festival program dedicated to the circulation, acquisition and sale of audiovisual products

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA :

– Rome Film Festival will only consider feature length films as submissions.

– All submitted films must be recent productions completed not prior to Monday 1st December 2013.

– They must not have been presented in any other format or length, not even as works-in-progress, for submission to previous editions of the Festival.

– With the exception of Out of Competition films, under no circumstances may films that have had prior public screenings, have participated in other international festivals or are available on the Internet, be presented at Rome Film Festival

SUBMISSION

To submit a film to the selection, one has to fill out a pre-selection entry form on the official festival website after which the preview DVDs should be sent to Deepti DCunha, the India Consultant to Artistic Director, Marco Müller.

– The DVDs should reach her before 10th August 2014 as the Artistic Director will be visiting India for selections.

– Filmmakers with films in post-production are requested to contact Deepti.

– In 2013, ‘Rangabhoomi’ by Kamal Swaroop had its World Premiere at the 8th Rome Film Festival and Amit Dutta’s ‘The Seventh Walk’ was the closing film of the CinemaXXI Section. There was a Special screening of ‘Om Dar B Dar’ by Kamal Swaroop on the occasion of 100 years of Indian Cinema. Prantik Basu’s ‘Makara’ was in CinemaXXI competition.

NFDC Labs has announced mentors for their Romance Screenwriters Lab.

Habib Faisal (writer/ director) and Bhavani Iyer (writer) are going to mentor the participants of the recently announced Romance Screenwriters’ Lab, and Ashok Banker and Shoma Narayanan will mentor the parallely scheduled Harlequin lab for screen to novel adaptations.

SCREENWRITERS LAB

NFDC, in association with Harlequin, is organising the first-ever Romance Screenwriters’ Lab, which will focus on developing scripts based on romance and women-centric plots.

– The Lab will be held in three stages and the participants will be mentored by three eminent people from the Indian film industry.

– The last stage of the Lab will culminate at Film Bazaar, Goa, where the participants will be given the opportunity to pitch the projects to prospective producers.

– Harlequin will also offer book deals to some of the selected projects, and organize independent workshops with mentors from the publishing industry.

– The Lab is open only to adult Indian passport holders

SELECTION

– The selection process is in two parts. This is the first part of the selection procedure where participants will be shortlisted based on the selected synopsis

– Participants shortlisted for the second stage will be given a scheduled duration to submit completed scripts. Submissions should be made via email only as a single pdf/doc file. Do not send material as separate attachments. No hard copy of submissions are to be sent.

DEADLINE

– All Applications must be received on or before 31st May 2014 by 6 pm.

FEES

– Application fee for the lab is INR 5,000/- only. It is payable by Demand draft made in favour of National Film Development Corporation Ltd., payable at Mumbai, or by Wire Transfer.

humaramovie-pvr-short-film-competitionWHAT: HumaraMovie, in association with PVR Cinemas, announces the first ever, Pan India Short Film Festival. The participants will get a chance to showcase their work not only on Humaramovie platforms but also in a PVR theatre.

HOW: 

The highlights of the competition are as follows –

– Open to filmmakers/ creative artists all across India
– Filmmakers will be guided through every step. They will have access to a script consultant,  as well as guides for production and editing
– Participants will have access to acclaimed filmmakers as mentors. The mentors are Vikas Bahl, Vikramaditya Motwane, Anand Gandhi, Imtiaz Ali
– The selected participants will have their films screened in PVR as well as on HumaraMovie platforms

PRIZE MONEY
– The winner will get prize money of Rs. 1,00,000.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Filmmakers should submit an already existing film, along with a short 150 word bio about themselves.
  • On the basis of the bio and the submitted film a preliminary shortlist will be made
  • The shortlisted candidates will be given a topic on which they have to submit screenplays.
  • Based on the screenplays we will further shortlist candidates who will then have to make the feature film.
  • There is no restriction on the genre of the film.
  • The duration of the short film should not exceed 15 minutes inclusive of opening and end credits
  • The contestants will be guided at every stage and will have access to script analysts as well as a mentor
  • The final films that the contestants submit will be screened in PVR (post going through a DCP and censor)
  • The screenings will be open for all and the winners will be decided by audience vote.

What’s the Global Dialogues contest all about?
Global Dialogues invites you to come up with an original idea for a short film about HIV/AIDS, sexuality, violence against women, or alcohol, drugs & sex. The best ideas will be turned into films by some of world’s greatest directors and young cinema talents. The Global Dialogues films, each proudly displaying the young authors’ names, are viewed by millions of people every year on TV and on the Internet. You can see the films they’ve produced so far at http://www.youtube.com/globaldialogues

Who can participate?
The Global Dialogues contest is open to all young people worldwide who will be under the age of 25 on 31 March 2014. (If you are older than that, you may participate by working in a team led by someone who is under 25.)

When’s the deadline?
All entries must be submitted by midnight GMT on 31 March 2014.

What are the contest prizes?
The contest entries will be examined by a series of juries. There will be 20 winners of the international contest. Each of these winners or winning teams will receive a cash prize of US$125, as well as the possibility of having a film based on their idea made and shown on TV and the Web. In addition, the top 3 winners or winning teams will receive special cash prizes:

Grand Prize: US$2,500
Second Place: US$1,250
Third Place: US$625

Winners of the international contest will receive their prizes on or before 31 July 2014 at the address they give on their Participant Questionnaire. Only one prize will be given to each winning team.

How to participate?

Topics: Your idea can be about any topic related to HIV/AIDS, sexuality, violence against women, or alcohol, drugs & sex. On the next page, you’ll find a list of suggested topics that you can use if you wish.

Story form and language: It’s up to you to decide what form your idea will take. Most participants in Global Dialogues contests write short stories, but you can also send in a video, a theatre play, a comic strip, a song, a poem.… Anything is possible as long as the text is in one of the official Global Dialogues languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Bahasa Indonesia, Kiswahili, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish. Length. If you write a story, it may be up to 10 pages long (maximum). Recorded songs or videos may not be longer than 10 minutes.

Resources: As you create your idea, please talk to organisations or individuals in your community who can provide you with good information on the contest issues, or visit credible sources of information online. You can take part alone or in a team.

i2F2 – Announcing Call for Entries and Online Submissions

The Chicago South Asian Arts Council (CSAAC), organizer of the four year running Chicago South Asian Film Festival, has announced the 2014 launch of i2F2, a path breaking Film Festival.

– The event will take place May 29 to June 5; in the vibrant, burgeoning, arts and cultural hub of downtown Evanston. The inaugural festival will showcase the best of world cinema in the heart of America with a special focus on films from three key regions: South Asia, Middle East, and Israel.

– The film festival will be organized in conjunction with the City of Evanston and act as a platform to discover, introduce, and propel new talent into the global spotlight.

– The festival is divided into five categories: Feature, Documentary, and Shorts where established and rising film makers will display their films while Student Shorts, and First-time Filmmaker Feature endeavors is there to encourage and celebrate emerging talent.

– The programming committee at i2F2 is now inviting all filmmakers to submit their films starting February 1, 2014 thru March 30, 2014.
