Will Udaan survive ? Will it manage to fly ? Cannes is great, and that too after so many years, but,  can We, The (Dumb) People, give the film its due ?  Will the bitch called box office be on our side for a change ? And how many bums does it require to get that elusive “hit” tag ?  Do we count ? And if we do, how much ? Since the time we saw the film, all of us had the same questions and doubts but nobody knew the answers. Only one thing was common – we all LOVED the film.

By now, am sure lot many have seen Udaan.  Its easily one of the best rated films of the year so far. So, it seems some people out there are writing good scripts, making uncompromised films too, though far and few in between, but have we been able to crack the “budget” ? And  even after doing so, how will the film reach the theatre ? And if it does so, will it manage to get those valuable bums who turn “shit” into “hit” ? Aah life. Ooh cinema! So, here it is all……after the art & craft of cinema…the arithematics of Udaan….. by someone who has been there, done that and seen it all.  Anurag Kashyap. Am sure, he doesnt need any introduction. And if he does, you are on the wrong page. Read on….

Udaan has finally been declared a success. It was the only film amongst others in the week which garnered the same box-office on Monday to Thursday, as it did on the first weekend.

Faith, in the end, has won.

There was no-way a film like Udaan could have got this kind of a release. Amidst the speculations and accusations on Twitter and Facebook that the marketing of Udaan was bad, it has survived.

Well, Udaan was not an easy film to sell. We racked our brains on it, Shikha and her team at UTV, Vikram, all of us tried coming up with every idea we could to sell it. Most of them had nothing to do with the film, so were rejected. The pressure on the team was so much, because of what they did with Dev.D. But the idea was not to do anything that would give the wrong perception of Udaan.

We also wanted to release the film the way it was cut. For once we had a film that everyone thought was poetic and had its own pace. All those decisions became a big no no for exhibitors. No one wanted to give many shows to Udaan, because the film smelled strange.

Hard negotiations followed. Gaurav from UTV armed with biggies like “Thank You” and “Tees Maar Khan” negotiated with theatre owners, got us two to three shows.

UTV similarily negotiated the TV rights. Who knew the fate of Udaan, but we had faith on good old word of mouth. In the second week, our number of shows have reduced to one or two shows but on Friday night in some theatres, it  was packed yesterday.

Here is hoping it continues its silent march through the theatres. For all the people screaming bad marketing, the truth is we just did’nt have the budget, we had to make do with what we had.

The fact is Udaan could very well have been “Firaaq“. A good film that got lost. But it isn’t. Today we sold our TV rights for 3.5 crores, film is released on Warner’s VOD , which has access to 20 million homes in the US. The same site where most of the indies and international arthouse films are releasing in the US today. Disney has got the homevideo rights for around 75lakhs (Plus T-Series has the music rights). And our first week net is 2.5 cr. It makes us profitable by around 25% of the investment and makes a film like Udaan a viability in the future.

If the film continues like this and just the box office starts to show us that so far elusive ‘Profit Margin”.. we are here to stay.

Today, I can say, after seeing him struggle with the industry, the market, himself and fate.. that Vikramaditya Motwane has truly arrived, and thank you Sanjay Singh and UTV for that.

PS – If you can read hindi, click here and read the post by Mihir Pandya…a different perspective and one of the best pieces on Udaan.

UPDATE – The tvc is out too.

Wow..what a deadly combo! Get ready to see the plastic and the pristine. The actor and the mannequin! And that rhymes too! Aha Kate, Wah Kate!

The third one in the pic along with Kate Winslet and Aishwarya Rai is Taiwanese model Chi-ling Lin. The commercial is being shot in Rome and its for Longines Watches DolceVita collection. The buzz in the blogosphere is that its based on the film La Dolce Vita. Hum dekhenge!

And the names are – Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Russian actor Alexander Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor and Vivaan Shah (Naseeruddin Shah’s son). We were sure about the other five, but had no clue about Annu Kapoor and the name of the Russian Actor. Hindustan Times finally got the list. Aha, relieved!

And our Twitter Khabri Svetlana Naudiyal passed on some exclusive dope too, though we are not sure about it. It seems Ruskin Bond is also doing a cameo in the film. Wooho! The name is Bond, Ruskin Bond! And here is her tweet..

as told so by his (Ruskin Bond) bookshop owner friend in mussorie.. a shop that Ruskin Bond visits every saturday.. he said that Ruskin Bond didn’t come for last two saturdays since he is busy with Saat Khoon Maaf and that he’s doing a small role too in it.. probably of a father or something.. though i don’t remember any such character in the story..

There is more to her (Svetlana’s) story. She even met Mr Bond after her khabri dope but admits that she was too starstruck to ask him anything. Aha, Svetlana…..Kuch Kuch Hota Hai…hum samajhte hai!

Back to Saat Khoon Maaf – its based on a short story by Ruskin Bond titled Susanna’s Seven Husbands. To know more about the story/plot/synopsis, click here to read our previous post on the film.

BTW, Jahan Bakshi has got a damn cool idea to trend Saat Khaan Maaf on Twitter. How about #7KM ? Is anyone listening ?

His last film blew our mind and how! Diving Bell and The Butterfly. And what a coincidence – As Christopher Nolan’s Inception has now become the “last film to blew our mind”, Schnabel is back with a new film titled Miral. And the trailer of Miral is out. Check it out.

It stars Freida Pinto in lead role along with Willem Dafoe, Hiam Abbass and Vanessa Redgrave. Its been shot by Eric Gautier. And here is the synopsis of the film…

Based on the novel by Rula Jebreal, the movie revolves around a real-life orphanage established by a Palestinian woman (Abbass) following the 1948 creation of the Israeli state. (Pinto) was sent to the orphanage in 1978. When, later in life, she goes to teach at a refugee camp and falls for an activist, Miral is torn between resistance and education as separate paths to political change.

A few days back, Cameron Bailey, the Co-director of Toronto International Film Festival was in Mumbai scouting for films. And we have been trying desperately to read between his tweets, for any possible hint about any Indian film which gets selected for the fest. And our eyes popped out when he tweeted….

Found a film in Bombay. If it hits you like it hit me, it will leave you drenched with emotions you can’t quite name.

Woohoo! Quite strong words to describe a film! Which film it could be ? We started the “Aao Guess Karein” game on twitter soon. Many of us thought it might be some Marathi film, because of the way the industry is currently producing some of the best films. And what can you expect from Bollylalalalnd of Jackasses! Seems like the hint was in his previous tweet….

Rains, cows, spit, donkeys, gold, silk, oil, mustaches and lunch with a supremely gracious superstar: Day 2 in Bombay.

Hmmm. Gracious superstar, who would be interested in Film Festival! It cant be any Jackass Superstar! We knew that Aamir and Kiran have been trying to push Dhobi Ghat into the fest circuit for quite sometime. They have been meeting all those who can lead to the right contacts at the right places. Even getting the Academy Award winning music director Gustavo Santaolalla on board to compose the music of the film was a move in perfectly right direction. Cameron’s third tweet made our life lil’ simpler. He tweeted…

Also met a talented new filmmaker you’ll be seeing at #TIFF10

We just had to join the dots. But before we could guess it, a friend (Aseem Chhabra) confirmed that its indeed Dhobi Ghat. And later on, we also confirmed it through our sources. So, big congrats to Kiran Rao! Making a mark with your debut feature is any filmmaker’s dream come true!

Though we dont have much clue about the film’s plot yet but it seems the film is set in Mumbai and revolves around the lives of four characters, whose paths criss-cross at Dhobi Ghat and Aamir plays a painter in the film. Prateik Babbar plays the other lead. Its shot in real locations, with Mohammed Ali Road, Marine Drive and Dhobi Ghat being its famous backdrops.

And this year clearly seems to belong to debutants. First Anusha Rizvi went to Sundance Festival with Peepli Live, then Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan got selected for Cannes Film Festival and now Kiran Rao. Welcome the new kids on the block. Cheers!

And the irony is veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam  is also getting honoured at the Venice Film Festival this year, the year when he made the worst film of his career. Post-Raavan, the joke is “woh kaun sa muh lekar Venice jaayega ? Arre, dus saar hai na. He can pick any one”. Sad indeed, but so true!

We had no clue about this film. Who made it, when, where, why and how! Found this promo while surfing the blogosphere. And it looks damn interesting. Starring Vinay Pathak, Mahie Gill, Sourabh Shukla and Mona Singh, its directed by Srikant Velagaleti. Shot on a budget of 4 crore….its the indie gang!

Though Vidhu Vinod Chopra is busy with his s0 called hollywood film Broken Horses, work on his other productions is going on in full swing. One of them, Ferrari Ki Sawaari will be directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, associate of RajKumar Hirani. According to official release, its a heartwarming tale of how the pursuit of an Indian cricket legend’s Ferrari makes a young boy’s dreams of playing cricket at Lords a reality.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajesh Mapuskar have co-written the script and dialogues are by Rajkumar Hirani. Accoring to this news piece, Ranbir Kapoor is going to star in the film and the makers are now looking for a child actor to play the young lead.

We are scouting for our next film. Looking out for a boy in the age group of 8 to 10 years. All those who know of kids who would be interested, please email their profile and pictures to us on fks360@gmail.com

So, if you have a kid who wants to act, try your luck or if you know someone who might be interested, just pass it around.

Madam Mahalingam has been missing in action since some time in Bollywood.  Why ? Because she is busy in Hollywood. Or what she believes is Hollywood. She keeps on tweeting every possible pic that she clicks when she meets any lil’ known face in Hollywood. And there is no news of her so called Hollywood debut Hisss yet!

Anyway, the first teaser trailer of her new film Politics Of Love ( or Love, Barack ) is out. Take a look and yawwwwn!

BTW, it seems the only thing she has gained so far is a fake accent. Click here and enjoy!

The world’s hottest election just got much hotter… Politics has never been this sexy… She was swift-boated by sex-tape! – Politics makes strange bedfellows, but never stranger than when, a month before the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, Kyle Franklin, a sexy, savvy, African American conservative falls for his Democrat counterpart, Aretha Gupta, a beautiful, idealistic local Obama volunteer coordinator. Sparks fly, tempers flares, heads turn, and romance blossoms for this mismatched pair of campaigners in the frantic and intoxicating days leading up to Election Day. Can the politics of love conquer all?

Starring Loretta Devine (Crash, Dreamgirls), legendary Oscar nominee Ruby Dee, Brian White (Stomp the Yard, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad…), Gerry Bednob (40 Yr Old Virgin) and Bollywood star Mallika Sherawat (Hisss, Murder).

The theatrical trailer of Pradeep Sarkar’s new film Lafangey Parindey is out. It stars Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone. Produced by Aditya Chopra (Yashraj Films), its written by Gopi Puthran, has music by R Anandh (the limca jingle is also by him) and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

He was born to fight…she was born to fly….where are we heading, Dada ? They will fly & fight together!  Deepika delivering tapori dialogues sounds incredibly funny! A Bambaiyya blind babe ??!! And somehow, it doesn’t feel, look or sound like a Pradeep Sarkar film. May be he is trying to do something new. Anyway, Check it out.
