Bejoy Nambiar is ready with his new film, David. Interestingly, this film is in both Hindi and Tamil, and strangely, there’s a mismatch in the number of Davids in the two versions; while the Hindi one has three, Tamil version has only two Davids.

The hindi one has Vikram, Tabu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vinay Virmani, Lara Dutta, Isha Sharvani and Monica Dogra in the lead. The Tamil version has almost the same cast but has Jeeva instead of Vinay and Neil.

First, the hindi trailer

And now, the Tamil Trailer

The trailers look very interesting. And though they don’t tell you much about the story but the visual montage looks powerful. What we saw in Shaitan, seems Nambiar is going to deliver more of it in this film – those slo-mo action sequences drenched in blood, rain and bullets. Also, the romantic portions bear a clear stamp of Ratnam-ish playfulness, and more so in the Tamil version.

And here are the two posters…

David Tamil Davivd Hindi

And the official synopsis (Hindi version)….

The story revolves around the lives of 3 Davids in 3 different parts of the world in 3 different eras.

1975 London- 30 year old David works for Iqbal Ghani, a dreaded Mafia don who controls the entire Asian community. He is a protege who is poised to take over the empire until a revelation which changes the course of his future.

1999 Mumbai- 19 year old David is a musician born into a family of devout Christians. A happy go lucky teenager who loses all semblance of his peaceful existence when his family gets dragged into a political issue.

2010 Goa – 40 year old David is a fisherman living in the small fishing village of Betul in Goa. He falls in love with the deaf and mute Roma- the only hitch is that she is engaged to be married to his best friend Peter in 10 days!

All 3 Davids are about to take a step which is going to change their lives forever.
3 LIVES, 3 DESTINIES, CONNECTED BY 1 NAME – ‘DAVID’.

And like everyone else, if you are still wondering about this 3 and 2 Davids, the director clarified about it to Anurag Kashyap on Twitter..

@ankash1009 the 3rd one (neil’s) didn’t fit into the tamil mileu. Would have had to re imagine it completely which was not feasible.

Aha, quite a long header. Let’s tackle it one by one. And not sure if it deserves a SPOILER ALERT because its all in the official synopsis.

Synopsis – The romantic misadventures of Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, a beautiful lass who over the course of thirty-five odd years, gets married seven times due to the untimely and mysterious deaths of half a dozen of her hapless husbands. The strange circumstances of their deaths, makes Susanna a prime accused. Did the husbands deserve to die? Were the murders out of necessity or pure blood-lust? Does Susanna ever find her one true love?

Key Word – Half a dozen.

And check out the six new character posters. And 7th one is again missing!

Character Details :

Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes (Priyanka Chopra) –  She is a beautiful lass who over the course of thirty-five odd years, gets married seven times due to the untimely and mysterious deaths of half a dozen of her hapless husbands. The strange circumstances of their deaths make Susanna a prime suspect. Enigmatic and irresistibly charming in equal measure – Susanna is the kind of woman any man would die for! Literally!

Key word – Half a dozen.

Neil Nitin Mukesh (Edwin Rodriques) – A young and beautiful Susanna falls in love with The Major, who’s oh-so-dashing in his uniform. Yes, he’s a bit too old for her, and he likes giving orders. But love is blind.

John Abraham ( Jimmy Stetson) – Soon thereafter – very soon – Susanna decides to marry Jimmy, whose good looks and musical talent sweep her off her feet. She invests in him, but she has no idea what lies in store.

Irrfan Khan (Wasiullah Khan) – As a romantic soul. Susanna is susceptible to beautiful poetry. Hence it is that she discovers and marries Wasiullah Khan A.k.a Musafir, by day a gentle poet and by night… something else.

Aleksandr Dyachenko (Nicolai Vronsky) – Growing older but no wiser. Susanna next marries a Mr. Vronsky from Moscow and almost re-enacts her very own Anna Karenina love story.

Anu Kapoor (Keemat Lal) – All these dead husbands! The police take an interest, especially Officer Keemat Lal, who is helpful to the extreme. He not only persuades Susanna to marry him, he makes it impossible for her to say no.

Naseruddin Shah( Modhusudhon Tarafdar) –  By now our Susanna is suffering from melancholy, not to mention indigestion. Along comes her savior, Dr. Modhusudhon Tarafdar with a healthy answer to both problems: a strict mushroom diet.

The 7th Husband – It turns out that Dr. Mushroom isn’t Susanna’s last savior. She marries yet again, and finally it’s for good.

Hmm. The 7th Husband is played by Naseeruddin Shah’s son Vivan Shah. So is it just 6KM ? And is there more to the 7th one ? If you have seen the theatrical trailer of the film, you must have also noticed that the last few seconds of the trailer has Vivaan Shah in a contemplative mood with Priyanka Chopra in the other corner. Your thoughts ?

Woot! Darrrrling is the new Dhen Tedan!

The trailer of Vishal Bhardwaj’s new film 7 Khoon Maaf is out. Aha, the popular joke doing the rounds is that 7KM trailer is the only good reason to watch Tees Maar Khan. But now its online. So, here it is…

The film stars Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Russian actor Alexander Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor and Vivaan Shah.

Click here and here to read our previous posts on 7 Khoon Maaf.

PS – Ruskin Bond also has a cameo in the film.

And Dear Vishal Bhardwaj,

After Bard and Bond, why do you want to go to Bhagat ? Please. Can you explain ?  Or are you seriously looking for the B-factor! You, Shah Rukh Khan, Chetan Bhagat and Sajid Nadiawala – where is the common ground ? Or are we completely blind ? Ok, you and Shah Rukh will be a great combo to look forward to but now in that Bhagu Chaat’s trash called 2 States.

Absolutely NOT looking forward to it

VB-hakts

And the names are – Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Russian actor Alexander Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor and Vivaan Shah (Naseeruddin Shah’s son). We were sure about the other five, but had no clue about Annu Kapoor and the name of the Russian Actor. Hindustan Times finally got the list. Aha, relieved!

And our Twitter Khabri Svetlana Naudiyal passed on some exclusive dope too, though we are not sure about it. It seems Ruskin Bond is also doing a cameo in the film. Wooho! The name is Bond, Ruskin Bond! And here is her tweet..

as told so by his (Ruskin Bond) bookshop owner friend in mussorie.. a shop that Ruskin Bond visits every saturday.. he said that Ruskin Bond didn’t come for last two saturdays since he is busy with Saat Khoon Maaf and that he’s doing a small role too in it.. probably of a father or something.. though i don’t remember any such character in the story..

There is more to her (Svetlana’s) story. She even met Mr Bond after her khabri dope but admits that she was too starstruck to ask him anything. Aha, Svetlana…..Kuch Kuch Hota Hai…hum samajhte hai!

Back to Saat Khoon Maaf – its based on a short story by Ruskin Bond titled Susanna’s Seven Husbands. To know more about the story/plot/synopsis, click here to read our previous post on the film.

BTW, Jahan Bakshi has got a damn cool idea to trend Saat Khaan Maaf on Twitter. How about #7KM ? Is anyone listening ?

The theatrical trailer of Pradeep Sarkar’s new film Lafangey Parindey is out. It stars Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone. Produced by Aditya Chopra (Yashraj Films), its written by Gopi Puthran, has music by R Anandh (the limca jingle is also by him) and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

He was born to fight…she was born to fly….where are we heading, Dada ? They will fly & fight together!  Deepika delivering tapori dialogues sounds incredibly funny! A Bambaiyya blind babe ??!! And somehow, it doesn’t feel, look or sound like a Pradeep Sarkar film. May be he is trying to do something new. Anyway, Check it out.

And you know where! If not, ask the pirates. If you still cant find it, then also its fine. Dont worry, wait for its theatrical release. But the news is shocking for sure.

If the big boys could not save Wolverine, whats the big deal about Johnny. Recently it happened the same with Anurag Kashyap’s Paanch also which was rumoured to be leaked out by the director himself because Anurag was tired of waiting for its theatrical release. Ashutosh Gowariker’s Whats Your Raashee was also leaked out before its theatrical release. Its another matter that nobody wanted to watch it for free also.

Tera Kya Hoga Johnny is directed by Sudhir Mishra and stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kay Kay Menon, Soha Ali, Shahana Goswami, Karan Nath and Sikandar who plays the lead role of Johnny.

But it seems both the director and producer are clueless about it. Or is it Sudhir Mishra who was frustrated waiting for its release, got inspired by his good freind Kashyap and leaked it out himself ? Or it got leaked out through a festival screener ? The film was doing the festival round. Aha, conspiracy theories and more! Whatever it is, but now Johnny seriously needs to worry ki ab kya hoga

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab KahaniIts that day of the week which we love the most! Filmy Friday! This week there are two new hindi releases – Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani (APKGK) and Jail. Or as they are saying, its Ranbir Kapoor VS Neil Nitin Mukesh, now that Imran Khan is miles and miles behind!

APKGK is directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi and stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. And here are the early reviews…

Taran Adarsh(Indiafm) – On the whole, APKGK entertains majorly. At the box-office, the fantastic pre-release campaign coupled with the terrific chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina, excellent music by Pritam and tremendous appeal for youth should ensure a big start for the film at the ticket window – 4/5

Anupama Chopra (NDTV) – Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, a comedy set in a comic book universe, is a frustratingly uneven film. Some of it is genuinely funny and delightful and some of it is repetitive, and annoyingly tedious – 3/5

Raja Sen (Rediff) -Honestly, it’s just good to watch a film with memorable comedy again. Heaven knows its been a while. And one that takes us back to a different, more wholesome kind of cinema. Even as the climax drags into predictability, Santoshi ensures that even divine intervention — to pull it all back on track again — comes with laughs. Gotta love that – 3.5/5

Mayank Shekhar (HT) – You look through this hollowness, and sense there is not a comic bone at all. There is certainly no romance either. Good boy (Ranbir Kapoor) fumbles and chases good girl (Kaif) through multiply tiring sequences. Saawariya for a debut was a poor practical joke on young Kapoor. This humourlessness, if at all, is infinitely sappier.

Gaurav Malani(Indiatimes) – The one thing you can’t overlook noticing in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is how Rajkumar Santoshi takes liberal references from every popular prem kahani of Bollywood and ends up with an ajeeb (weird) jumbled screenplay – 2/5

Nikhat Kazmi(TOI) – Gazab comedy, this one. Really, Ranbir is a revelation, Katrina is full of beans and the newly formented Ranbir-Katrina chemistry sets the screen on fire in this mad hatter’s tea party that takes you on a roller-coaster ride as Raj Kumar Santoshi tries to retrack his way to his Andaz Apna Apna days – 4/5

Rajeev Masand (CNN IBN) – Despite its hiccups, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is not an entirely unwatchable film, and the credit for that goes squarely to its leads who invest sincerity and genuine enthusiasm while attacking their roles. Katrina Kaif breezes through her scenes, endearing you to the vulnerable Jenny; striking up a radiant chemistry with her co-star. As for Ranbir Kapoor, he is the brightest spot in this ordinary film, rising above the script’s many holes, occasionally even making the stupidity work – 2.5/5

Khalid Mohamed (PFC) – The kid’s brilliant. So watch it Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor and all the big and small Khans. At the rate he’s going – by sheer evidence of his screen charisma, technical felicity and youth power – Ranbir Kapoor is more than likely to be the Next Best Thing, if he isn’t one already. He’s RK Jr and he’s more than super A-Ok -2.5/5

Shubhra Gupta(Indian Express) – Once upon a time, Rajkumar Santoshi made a lovely little film which was all fun and games. ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ (1994), which came at a time when neither Aamir nor Salman were Superstars Inc., has traveled well—its unfettered joyousness delights at every fresh viewing. The same cannot be said for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani – 1/5

Kaveree Bamzai (India Today) – The movie sails because of Kapoor’s effortless ease. He dances like a dream, looks good enough to take your eyes off Kaif, and raises a lot of laughs with his goofiness. And guess what, he looks pretty in pink too. Ad he has a memorable no sorry, no thank you dialogie as well: all he wants is to be Kaif’s friend, no complaints, no demands. This one, ladies and gentlemen, is a stayer. See you around, Ranbir – 3/5

Minty Tejpal (Mumbai Mirror) – For the most part of the film, you do drool, mostly over the totally delicious lead pair, and often enough over the ridiculous dialogue in this absurd, mad comedy being played out on screen. Ha ha and a hoot. In fact, the first half of the film just rocks all the way – 3.5/5

Anand Vaishanav (Buzz18) – With such a gorgeous pair, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, could have been a charming joyride. But instead it settles for a routine, time pass watch. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s chemistry shines long after the curtains fall down – 2.5/5

Jail is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and stars Neil Nitin Mukesh,  Mugdha Godse and Manoj Bajpai.

Rajeev Masand (CNN IBN) – Because it’s well-intentioned and settles for a hopeful message, you stay with the film despite the fact that it’s never quite compelling. It’s got its heart in the right place, but sometimes that’s not enough – 2.5 /5

Anupama Chopra (NDTV) – Bhandarkar’s cinema has often been called hard-hitting but the trouble with Jail is that it simply doesn’t hit hard enough. See it if you must – 2.5/5

Taran Adarsh(Indiafm) – On the whole, JAIL is a well-made film from an expert storyteller. At the box-office, the film will appeal to those with an appetite for hard-hitting, realistic fares, but its clash with APKGK will affect its business to an extent – 3/5

Khalid Mohamed (PFC) – Okay, okay, for heaven’s sake this is a Bhandarkar, Madhur Bhandarkar movie. Get real, appreciate Jail for being as rough, real and dammit, outspoken. Sorry guys, want to..however it’s anything but. It’s just not in the league of the eye-opening Fashion, Traffic Signal, Page 3 and Chandni Bar, which have their loyal admirers including the National Film Award juries. Yeah – 2/5 (there’s nothing here that you don’t know or haven’t seen already)

Raja Sen(Rediff) – The detailing is shoddy, the characters cardboard and the dialogue plain laughable. Jail is a formulaic, below average Bollywood headache, slowed down to lugubrious dullness. Groan. Leave it be, this prison of cardboard and cliche. We all deserve better – 1/5

Mayank Shekhar (HT) – What we may have liked to know, like with any story, is something more about the hero himself — his past, his conflicts, his shattered dreams. It could’ve greatly helped with the sorely missed empathy. But that’s not to be. I guess, only in a film-culture as less evolved as ours, would a movie with merely a setting, pride itself so much on realism alone – 2/5

Kaveree Bamzai (India Today) – There’s a sense that we’re sitting in on a reality show, that it’s Bigg Boss Season 4 set inside a jail. You find yourself wishing Mukesh’s ordeal ends, not so much for him as for you. Hey Mr Bhandarkar, it’s time to think of a new formula, or choose a subject that thrills like Fashion- 2/5

Gaurav Malani(Indiatimes) – Compare Jail to Madhur Bhandarkar’s earlier works and you would be disappointed to a degree. Nevertheless, compare it to many other mediocre movies of today and Jail is still a step ahead. Jail is captivating but not consistently – 2.5/5

Minty Tejpal (Mumbai Mirror) – The movie itself is more like a well-researched documentary that teaches you a few new things about life in jail, so it’s pretty instructive for anyone planning on landing up there. The promos of Jail read, ‘sentenced on November 6’. Yes, ‘sentenced’ is right – 2/5

Shweta Parande(Buzz18) – If the film works, it will only be because of Madhur’s execution. Otherwise, Jail has nothing new to offer – 2/5

Pradeep SarkarYashraj Films has finally announced their new film with Pradeep Sarkar. The title is not yet finalised but the cast is in place. The film will star Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone.

If gossipmongers are to be believed, Pradeep Sarkar desperately tried his luck with many other actors but none of them were willing to do his new film after the debacle of Laga Chunari Me Daag (LCMD). Am guessing they finally had no choice but to settle for Neil Nitin Mukesh.

According to the press release, “both the actors have extremely challenging roles to play in this love story set in the gritty streets of Mumbai“. Extremely challenging roles for the extremely challenged Neil Nitin Mukesh & Deepika Padukone ? As Dhoni says in the Aircel ad, Aur bolo ?

Talking of Pradeep Sarkar, here is an intersting incident that happened after the release of his last film, and I got to know about it much later. Earlier one of us used to blog on passionforcinema.com. I loved Parineeta and hated Laga Chunari Me Daag. After the release of Laga Chunari Me Daag, I wrote this post on how the directorial debut of his dop Sushil Rajpal is much better than LCMD! I dont know Sushil Rajpal but managed to watch his film Antardwand at a screening. It bagged the National Award for Best Film on social issues this year and is going to get a theatrical release soon through Sunil Doshi’s company.

The headline of my post ( Pradeepda, call up your dop Sushil Rajpal and ask him how he got those small things right in his unreleased film Antardwand that you could not in Laga Chunari Me Daag ? ) was enough to do the damage. Pradeep Sarkar and his whole team read the post. And they somehow felt that I knew Sushil Rajpal and he is the real culprit.  Voila!

Sushil RajpalAs a dop, Sushil has been working with Pradeeep for long time. When the two (Pradeep and Sushil) met for their next tv commercial shoot, Pradeep wasnt even looking at Sushil. Forget about talking and discussions. A royal ignore! He was still pissed off because of the blogpost. Sushil kept on wondering WTF is this! He told one of his colleagues…yaar maine kya kiya ? Kisi ne mere film ki taarif ki lekin yeh to bilkul ulta ho gaya! Kaun hai yeh….kisne likha hai ?

Though I was the culprit, poor Sushil Rajpal had to face his wrath! Just what can a blogpost do! Cheap thrill, i bet!

So will Sushil Rajpal shoot his new film ? Lets see. Will keep posted.

Akshay KumarAccording to the news buzz, Akshay Kumar has signed a new film with UTV Motion Pictures. The film will be directed by Anees Bazmee and is titled Thank You.  It seems Akshay has been a fat paycheck even during these recession times. The big question is will Akshay Kumar score a hattrick with Anees Bazmee after Welcome & Singh Is King ?

Thank You is a comic caper and Neil Nitin Mukesh will also star in it. The leading ladies are yet to be finalised.

BTW, we think Akshay Kumar (AK)  should change his name to PAK – Punju Akshay Kumar.  Because in almost every other film he is playing the same good ol’ Punju and doing similar stuff.

Rensil D’Silva ? He is ad filmmaker & screenwriter ( Rang De Basanti, Luck ) and is making his directorial debut with Saif Ali, Kareena Kapoor & Vivek Oberoi in the lead. The film is titled Kurbaan ( earlier titled Jehad) and is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

new yorkHere is the dope. Rensil recently checked out Kabir Khan’s New York, the new film from Yashraj Films. And he was shocked to see that two scenes in New York are exactly the same as it is in his film Kurbaan. Now how is that possible ? He quickly called up Karan to inform him about it. Karan generally sends all his scripts to Aditya Chopra for his feedback. Well, the dots got connected soon.

Now, Rensil D’Silva doesnt know what to do. He can’t go back and re-shoot those two scenes. And if he keeps the same scenes, it will look like he copied it from New York. Which scenes ? Read on.

1) The scene where Nawajuddin is driving the car and Katrina Kaif is sitting next to him. The police guys stops the car and asks Nawajuddin to show his license. He doesn’t understand english and so reacts violently thinking that police guys are harassing him because he is a muslim.

2) The second scene is the one where John Abraham introduces Neil Nitin Mukesh to his group. He picks out the traitor in the group and tells him to run away. And then John turns to Neil and asks him to take aim at the guy.

First was Suchita Bhhatia and now its from Karan Johar. what is Aditya Chopra upto these days ?

Strangely, K Jo sold the distribution rights of his two forthcoming films Kurbaan & Wake Up Sid to UTV, instead of Yashraj films who have been distributing his films for long. And now this incident. Will K Jo trust Adi again ? The answer isn’t difficult to guess.
