ram-gopal-varmaThe man knows it all. But you cant win all the games. His recent film Rann is on the politics of newsroom, the battle for eyeballs. And so, we thought that atleast Ramu would understand the way news channels work. They are not run by shitheads as he and his publicity smartasses might be thinking. Why ? Read on.

With the distorted version of Jann Gana Mann as Jana Gana Rann, Ramu and his coterie must have thought that they have cracked the next big idea for the publicity of the film. So even before the song got censor certificate, it was smartly handed over to the news channels to play, expecting the right buzz to happen. And thats how its available all over the net. When the intention is not so cool, the coolest idea also falls flat. Thats exactly what happened. With the IPL and election fever on, nobody bothered much about the jana gana rann song. No play, no eyeball, no buzz.

Next, as expected Censor Board didnt allow the song. Ramu was more than happy with the news. It was moving in the direction as it was planned. Rann’s publicity managers tried to convince the news editors to debate, dicuss and dissect the issue. Blame it on Varun and Rahul baba’s high election drama and fakeiplplayer’s entertaining posts…those were much more interesting. Deadend again.

Next, Ramu approached the court to get the song cleared. And as expected the Supreme Court slammed Ramu for distorting the national song. Here is more.

We always thought this was one dude who would never pretend to be holier-than-thou and try to show us the mirror because he always said that he looks dirty when he watches himself in the mirror. We expected Ramu to be the last man to give us gyaan on the state of the nation and blah blah. But then, for publicity people do strange things.

So What does Mr Amitabh Bachchan thinks about this publicity gimmick ? The man who is always ready to butcher the media. Or he has no clue.

And here goes our love letter to the man whom we love to hate or hate to love…

Dear Ramu,

After your horrible attempts like Sarkar Raj, Contract and Phoonk, we are not sure about others but we will be there.  Because we still think that you are the original inglorious bastard, one who can talk about the love for RIFLE so openly and without any guilt. Only few dare to do so. This is the real you or atleast thats your image. You are not jana gana rann. Dont give us lecture. And please dont pretend. Bollywood is anyway guided by too heavy morals. We dont want one more conscious citizen.

If for nothing else, we will watch Rann for the honest man who tried to fake it with Jann Gana Rann.

People do strange things to make a film. And films have done stranger things to people. But this one beats everyone and everything. If you dont believe us, take a look at this pic. Take a guess and scroll down to see the other pic.

rituparno ghosh

rituparno ghosh

Thats filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh with his father, spotted recently at a polling booth during the elections. Mumbaimirror has published this shocking pic in today’s edition. And the second pic is also of Rituparno Ghosh.

Its not difficult to spot the difference. And when its so prominent. But how and why ? We know that cinema has the power to change people, but so much! We never knew. Or is it cosmetics, surgery and more. Do let us know what you think. We are still confused.

….No, we are not talking about her kissing scenes in Kites!

Indian media has already devoted much newsprint and airtime on the Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori’s kiss story. If  the news is true then Hrithik and Barabara share more than a passionate kiss in their forthcoming film Kites. And this is creating quite a buzz…..What does Hrithik Roshan feels about the kiss ? Is papa Rakesh Roshan embarassed about it ? What does director Anurag Basu has to say ? Or How is wife Suzzane Roshan reacting to the kiss scene ? Its a BIG big deal!! Well, it might be a big deal for the Roshans and the audience but it seems Barbara has done much better than that. Almost nude scenes. If you dont believe us, watch these two clips from her mexican film La Mujer De Mi Hermano ( My Brother’s Wife).

Actress Neetu Chandra was recently doing a sexy photo-shoot for the magazine The Man’s cover. But it seems the pics and poses were too hot to handle.

People gathered there to catch a glipmse of the actress felt that Neetu was promoting lesbianism which is against our culture. They started shouting slogans claiming to be from Raj Thackeray’s MNS Party. Finally the shoot had to be stopped. Anyway, the magazine has decided to go ahead with the cover.

Before the magazine hit the stands, here’s a sneak peek at Neetu’s hot avtaar. The other model in the pic is Krishikha Gupta. And three cheers for Neetu, as bollywood actresses always shy away from bikini as if its some ET costume!

santosh sivanYes, the news is indeed true. Cinematographer Santosh Sivan is back with Mani Ratnam. Earlier Manikandan was shooting Ratnam’s film Raavan, which is almost 60 percent complete. But because of Ratnam’s heart attack, the film’s schedule went haywire. And Manikandan had committed his dates for Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan’s new film.

Without any options, Ratnam called up his old favourite Santosh Sivan. According to gossipmongers, there is more to this story. It wasnt all well between Ratnam and Manikandan. Because of professional reasons ofcourse. And it was good excuse to part aways.

Mumbaimirror has got more specific details about the film’s plot…

Raavan is a modern-day Ramayana, in which an encounter specialist shifts to a small town in northern India after his marriage to a classical dancer Raagini (Aishwarya Rai). The town is run by a tribal goon Beera (played by hubby Abhishek Bachchan). Beera who to avenge the inspector, kidnaps Raagini and  eventually falls for her. So what would Raagini do ? Go back or staywith her kidnapper ?

raakhIt was a cult film of its time which never got its due. A dark depressing tale of a young man trying to find his voice against all odds. Was critically acclaimed, all the possible four stars too, but could never reach out to wider audience because it released with few prints. Made on a shoe-string budget, release was more difficult.

The names were all new then – Aamir Khan, Aditya Bhattacharya, Santosh Sivan and A Sreekar Prasad. 20 years later, they dont need any introduction.

And here is the great news – Raakh will be re-released in theatres again.  The dvd is almost impossible to locate. So, all you guys who havent seen it yet, head to your nearest theatres soon. Raakh releases on June 12th, 2009.

The film stars Aamir Khan, Supriya Pathak, Pankaj Kapoor and Naina Balsaver. And here is the promo of the film.

Ashvin Kumar’s debut feature The Forest is ready for release. Its been quite sometime, almost a year may be.  And they are looking for distributors. Those have seen the film, loved it. To quote “its something that has not been done in india before and its really scary”. A screening of the The Forest was held in Mumbai some time back. But since then there has been no news of its release.

Ashvin got an Oscar nomination for his short film Little Terrorist. He is now at Cannes Film Festival and there is some good news. The Forest has already got some buyers.  He writes more about his Cannes experience on Rediff.com. Read on. Or here is the Rediff link.

ashvin kumarOur apartment looks out to the Cot D’ Azure the brilliant blue Mediterranean sea, with huge luxury yachts floating all over it. I love the weather in Cannes! It’s great to be back here after an absence of two years. And we have a film in the market — even better!

It’s my parents’ first time in Cannes. They were going to be in Europe this week so have come down to check out what it is that I do. A day was spent showing them around, they look stunned. I think they’re really soaking in the festive atmosphere and are already talking about coming back next year. It’s a good idea, if we get a whole possy of people we can rent a villa outside somewhere and make a week of it.

We went to meet our distributors Non Stop Sales, on the Scandanavian Terrace, where I am poaching their internet connection and writing this from. The India pavilion was inaugurated yesterday. Abhishek Bachchan, Manisha Koirala, Deepti Naval, Bobby and Versha Bedi, Mr Hinduja, Tannishtha Chatterjee attended.

I ran from that to the screening of The Forest. A good attendance. And this morning I was given the good news that we’ve sold the film to four countries already. It’s a great beginning to a Cannes in recession! We’re going to announce those sales to the trades here in Cannes (Variety/Screen International) and expect there to be more interest in the film for the second screening.

I got tickets to the red carpet for this evenings film — kicking around Cannes for four years helps in knowing where to procure these things. We dressed up in bandhgallas and I found myself walking with Freida Pinto. Mom and she got into a conversation and I became the tourist on the red-carpet taking pictures. Her costumes for Slumdog Millionaire are from the Ritu Kumar Label line, and they spoke about that and her new wardrobe.

A wonderful meal followed, fillet minion, meat that good should be eaten every night. And a fabulous bottle of Provencal red. Following that a volley of parties. First the Marche du film party on the Miramar beach, where I met my friend Gueido, a distributor from Argentina. A real eccentric. The party was thinning out by the time we got there. But the Champagne was great. Then a place called Bauli (not in Haryana) where we met up with Manisha Koirala and some friends. Went mental on the dance floor, and called it a night around 2 am — from which I am still suffering as I write this.

All in all a great start to Cannes.

And if you havent seen The Forest trailer yet, here it is.

Here is something for all you dog lovers. The ohhh..thats so cute moment! Now how is this related to cinema ? Well, we are talking about Amitabh Bachchan, and his pet. Got it? You must have seen Bachchan in various characters and get ups, but here is the first look at his pet Shanouk ( Gosh, we sound like India TV….unke kutte ki pehli tasveer!). Anyway, Big B surely loves everything big. Just look at the pics.
