Screenwriting@IIT Madras

Is this Dashavtar after-effect ? We think so.

Because Kamal Hassan, in association with Indian Institute of Technology – Madras is organising this screenwriting workshop and seminar from May 29th to June 3rd,  2009. 
 
The screenwriting workshop will be conducted by K Hariharan, Director of the L V Prasad Film and TV Academy, Anjum Rajabali, Professional screenwriter and head of departments of screenwriting at Film and TV Institute, Pune and Whistling Woods, Mumbai and Atul Tiwari, Professional screenwriter and well known playwright. Veteran writer Jean Claude Carreiere will be available through video-confrencing. And Gulzar also might attend.

Benegal’s next – Well Done Abba

After Welcome To Sajjanpur ( WTS), Shyam Benegal is ready with his next film, a satire titled Well Done Abba. Its produced by Big Pictures and shooting of the film is complete.

It was earlier titled Abba Ka Kuan. But seems Big is following in UTV’s footsetps. Shyam’s last film was titled Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur and was later changed to Welcome To Sajjanapur for popular appeal. 

Well Done Abba has Boman Irani in double role along with Minissha Lamba and Sammir Dattani.  

The story revolves around Armaan Ali, a driver working in Mumbai. He takes leave for a month to find a husband for his teenage daughter, who lives in a small locality close to Hyderabad. Armaan Ali returns to work  after three months.  His young employer wants to sack him but is persuaded to listen to the reason why Armaan got so delayed.

 The film is inspired by two short stories – ‘Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi’ by Jeelani Bano and ‘Phulwa Ka Pul’ by Sanjeev.  And Its WTS team again…screenplay is by Ashok Mishra, music by Shantanu Moitra and lyrics by Ashok Mishra, Swanand Kirkire & Ila Arun. 

 Ravi Kishen, Ila Arun, Salim Ghouse, Sonali Kulkarni, Rajit Kapur, Yashpal Sharma, Ravi Jhankal and Deepika Amin are in supporting roles.

All you folks who have been busy scratching heads trying to figure out if its for real or not and why its non-stop all of a sudden, here is the real dope. From Khan insider.

Shahrukh has always been taking digs at Aamir Khan. On his height, his attitude, being perfectionist and for taking himself too seriously. But Aamir never bothered much. All hell broke loose last year when Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi were about to release. In an interview SRK said that post 26/11 attack in Mumbai, people should not be exposed to any more violence, even violent films, its not the right time and the right environment. It was easy guess, he was refering to Ghajini. This was the final quote that did it. Before that it was all in good spirit.

Aamit felt that SRK is trying to sabotage his film. Convincing people not only to watch RNBDJ but dissuading them from watching Ghajini. Aamir decided ab aur nahi. And thats how the Khan slang match started. We aren’t complaining!

The two recently came together to support United Producers Form on the producer-multiplex revenue issue. Fellas, dont fool yourself and believe that its for the larger cause. Its only because Aamir (as producer) has three releases this year – Dhobi Ghaat, Delhi Belly, The Falling and Shahrukh (as co-producer) has My Name is Khan. Its all about money, honey!

ps : Bijlis of PVR multiplex chain met Aamir Khan, requested him not to support the producers forum. But Aamir refused.  BTW, PVR co-produced Aamir’s Taare Zameen Par.

Raja Rediff Sen, the film critic with Rediff has written the dialogues for the film 99. The film stars Kunal Khemu, Cyrus Broacha and Soha Ali. The promo and the first song of the film looks good. Have a look….

Writer-killer Krapash Jha

He is writer, director, producer and is now contesting elections. Have always been known for his social-political films. When it comes to dierction, he is a control freak on the sets. We knew that. But he belongs to the club of writer-killers, we had no clue. We got the dope recently.

After all those social tamashas, how about paying the writer ? Naah. Its all drama. Count him in the writer-killers club. Yes, we will try to put out the names of all those producer/director who dont pay their cast/crew. Its best to avoid them.

Google and its easy to figure out that he has assets work 55 crore! Yes, 55 fucking crore! And nothing for the writer sir ? 

Looks like he followed Laloo-Paswan. Started honestly but went kaput! With him, write at your own risk!

writing for others

Here is a small  note from a friend who has been trying to get a break as a film writer since last 2 years. Frustrated, he has now taken up AD job and is trying to pitch in with his script whenever he manages. Forget Syd Field, listen to someone who is on the field, facing it all….

Unless and until you are Abbas Tyrewala, its tough luck here. Because every director wants a good writer.

And good writer means one who can type fast. Because every director just wants a typist who cant type exactly what the director wants. But what the director wants, he/she also doesn’t know.

And if you type something that the director can’t think of, then you have more trouble. How can you think better than him/her ?

Better to write your own script and then look out for director/producers. Thats what i have realised in the last one year.
