sanjay_leela_bhali2Woohooo! We are not sure who all have gone mad but we surely are going insane since we heard the news. And since its directly from horse’s mouth, we have no choice but to believe it.

Rs 35 crore!!!! And that too, post-Saawariya! Welcome to Bhansali Blues! Some men have all the luck to do all the Leela! And some like UTV make it possible too.

UTV is producing the film Guzaarish. The budget of the film will be Rs 60-65 crore and the major chunk will go to director’s pocket. It seems Bhansali also managed to convince Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai to take a pay cut and so extra goodies will go to  SLB’s account.

Btw, a huge set of the film has been erected in Mumbai’s Mehboob Studio. If gossipmongers are to be believed, the story is set in Goa.

Also, because of Guzaarish, Vibhu Puri’s Chenab Gandhi, to be produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been postponed to next year. Vibhu assisted Bhansali on Saawariya. Chenab Gandhi will star Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Rajeev Khandelwal.

We at FC, have an interesting history with Guzaarish. Click here and here to know more. Story, plot details, denials, headlines and some more.

cinemaWe are the world, if we go by the mind-boggling numbers regarding Indian cinema. Chew on and see if you can digest!

We hav tried to simplify the numbers as mentioned in Focus 2009 – World Film Market Trend, a report by  European Audiovisual Observatory, a public service body gathering and distributing information on the audiovisual industry. ( figures according to 2007-2008 releases)

 – The Indian film industry produced 1132 feature films in 2007. In comparison, the American film industry in 2008 produced 520 feature films, Japan 418 and China 400.

– India also has the cheapest movie tickets for any major film producing nation.

 – For theatre admissions, India’s count was 3.3 billion for 2008 and was higher than the combined total of the next nine biggest film producing countries. The US was the only other country to have more than a billion admissions.

– India has the cheapest ticket price averaging $0.5 (Rs 22). The average price of a ticket in the nine other big film producing countries ranges between $2.2 in China and $11.7 in Japan.

– The low ticket price accounts for the fact that gross box office collections of the Indian film industry – $1.8 billion in 2007 – are behind those of the US and Japan. With $9.7 billion collected at the American box offices in 2008, the US tops the charts followed by Japan with $1.9 billion.

– Among the major film markets, India is the only one in which Hollywood blockbusters, even after being dubbed in various local languages, have not managed to give local movies a serious challenge.

 – Not one of the top 10 films in India ranked by admissions or box office collections was from the US. In contrast, 8 of the top 10 films in the UK and Spain originated from America, Germany had 7 US films in its top 10, Korea and Italy 6 each, Japan 4, France 3 and China 2.

– In terms of multiplex screens – USA has over 29,000 screens, India has only 850, ahead only of Korea among the top 10 film markets of the world.

Aha…the melodrama in our DNA……we, the billion plus!

Abhijeet SawantYou join politics! And that’s what India’s first Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant has done. Sawant has joined Shiv Sena.

Abhijeet Sawant suddenly shot to fame when he won the first season of Sony Tv’s show Indian Idol. We were never too fond of him. He became gaurav of Marathi Manoos. But then everything went wrong. His albums flopped, accused of plagiarism, got bad reviews.

He moved to reality shows. Tried shaking his legs. No more luck there. Someone saw an actor in him and decided to gamble his money with Lottery. Have you even heard of it ? Obviously the film sank without any trace.

With nothing more to do, Abhijeet has joined politics just before the Maharashtra Assembly Elections. Shiv Sena’s Executive President Uddhav Thackeray made the announcement and welcomed Sawant in the party. With Shiv Sena facing tough competition from MNS, Sawant’s singing will surely manage some crowd at the rallies. Votes ? We aren’t sure.

If Pritam is here, can plagiarism be far behind! Or may be, its just his bad luck. Some sound somewhere always sounds similar! Check out this song.

Vodpod videos no longer available.  more about “deewane tere naam ke – eSnips, share …“, posted with vodpod

Sounds familiar ? Saudagar. Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anupam Kher. Tring tring. Deewane tere naam ke!

Now, check out Love Aaj Kal’s Aahun Aahun, the intial hook.

The good news. In the CD, the credit reads  kadi te hass bol ve. Lyrics & melody – traditional.

And after lil youtubing, we discovered this one – one of the traditional punjabi folk version.

Finally, some sanity in Pritam’s world!

LuckWe are not too fond of shouting “we told you so” from the rooftop again n again but then, we really don’t have a choice. When we read the script of Luck and posted our thoughts on it (click here & here ), many raised their eyebrows as high as Eiffel Tower. As if we were faking it! And if the early reviews are any indication, all you guys with raised eyebrows can suck your towers!

The film stars Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Shruti Hassan, Danny Denzongpa, and Mithun Chakraborty. Its directed by Soham Shah.

Raja Sen ( Rediff ) – What the luck is this ? –  1/5

Gaurav Malani (Indiatimes) – Director Soham Shah rubs too hard on luck but at the same time stresses on the adage that ‘the only thing certain about luck is it’s going to change’. On that thought here’s wishing him better luck next time – 2 /5

Rajeev Masand ( CNN IBN ) – Luck, neither smart nor spectacular – 2/5

Khalid Mohamed ( Aslibaat) – Luck kiya jaaye ? No way – 1/5

Taran Adarsh (Indiafm) – On the whole, LUCK rides on star power, adrenaline-pumping thrills and a concept that’s novel for the Indian screens. Despite some loose ends, these three factors primarily would ensure a Lucky journey at the box-office – 3 /5

Minty Tejpal ( Mumbai Mirror) – Yuck! – 1/5

Anand Vaishnav (Buzz18) – Despite a solid start, by the time it ends you might say…Is Luck Se Mujhe Bachao – 1.5 / 5

Anupama Chopra (NDTV) – It might be unintentionally funny entertainment on a slow night when you have nothing else going on. So I’m going with two out of five stars and recommending that you wait for the DVD – 2/5

And surprisingly, some of the reviewers seems to share the exact thoughts as we put in our previous posts. Raja Sen felt it was like boring Khatroon Ke Khiladi episodes and Anupama Chopra mentions 13 Tzameti and Intacto sequences in her review.

Dear Imran, here is our next red alert for you!

The pics have been carefully leaked out. The intention is clear. But here is the most funnies part. It seems Hrithik Roshan got his wife Suzanne’s name tattooed when she was out of town. As a big surprise for her. Suprise ? Oh yeah. And then leak it out to the media for the world to know.

The first four pics are, well, what we would like to term as redemption! The pain. And the last two are the ones which started it all. According to gossipmongers, Hrithik was seriously flying high with his Kites co-star Barbara Mori. Even daddy Rakesh Roshan knew it all. When Suzanne got to know about it, she planned the masterstroke. Leaked out the news to tabloids and made Roshan boy deny it all and come back to home quickly. Indian actors dont fuck around. They are straight out of K Jo’s cinema – its all about loving your family.

And now these tattooes. Roshan junior will remember the fun, the sin and the redemption whenever he meets a new Barbara in his life again! Strange are the ways of bollywood!

My Name Is Khan2Yes, its confirmed. Since its inception, Fox Star Studios, a joint venture between 20th Century Fox and STAR Network, hasn’t been much active. It started business with the big one Slumdog Millionaire. But could not manage much business because the whole world had already seen the film by the time they decided to release it in the theatres in India.

Recently Fox Star Studios signed the deal with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions for rights of My Name is Khan for a whopping 100 crore. The figure is not yet confirmed but thats the number doing the rounds. Earlier this year, Karan Johar tied up with UTV for his other two productions, Qurbaan ( Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi ) and Wake Up Sid ( Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma). And now the deal with the Fox Star Studios. Seems like its the end of Yashraj films-Dharma Productions’ dostana, who earlier used to distribute all of Karan Johar’s films.

My Name is Khan stars Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol and is directed by  Karan Johar. Its the story of Rizwan Khan, a man with asperger syndrome, whose son gets killed in a racial attack and he is branded as a terrorist. Rizwan then decides to  meet the President to clear his stand. Eventually it turns out to be a big campaign across the country and makes him famous. Rizwan’s punchline says it all – My Name is Khan & I am not terrorist! It has superhit written all over it. Seems like a good deal for Fox Star Studios.

Elesh ParujanwalaThats what Mumbai Mirror claims. Rakhi Sawant is finally getting married to Elesh Parujanwala on the show Rakhi Ka Swayamvar.

At this stage, there are three finalists – Manas Katyal, Chitiz Jain and Elesh Parujanwala. Elesh is 30 year old Gujrati  businessman based in Toronto. Runs family business and wants to get into entertainment industry in Mumbai.  Seems like a perfect match. Rakhi will get deep pocketwala NRI and Elesh will find a getaway for his bollywood aspirations! If nothing, Nach Baliye guys will surely call up the pair.

BTW, there have been few other rumours doing the rounds. First, She will not marry anyone. The finalist will be offered big money and will be asked to choose between Rakhi Sawant or money. He will go for the cash.

Second, Rakhi’s ex-boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi will turn up at the show, do some drama and she will finally end up with him. With Rakhi, anything is possible. You never know!

Whats’s next ? Rakhi Ka Honeymoon and Rakhi Ka Divorce!

Kaminey 2First we read that there are four writers who have been credited for Kaminey. Vishal Bhardwaj, Supratik Sen, Sabrina Dhawan and Abhishek Chaubey. And now there is one more addition.

In an interview to Mumbai Miror, Vishal has clarified that the story started with a fifth person. To quote Vishal

Four years ago, Mira Nair assembled writers from America, India and Canada to mentor ten students from Asia and Africa. This scriptwriting workshop was held in Kampala, Yuganda.

A young writer from Nairobi showed me a script which was a story about twin brothers and what happens in their life in a span of 24 hours. It was like parallel cutting and I really liked that approach. Mira and I spoke about it at length and both of us felt that it was a typical Bollywood masala movie.

I was in touch with that writer for the next six months. He also sent me another draft. Then two-three years later I asked him to sell me the idea. He was in need of money so I sent him some 4000 dollars and bought the script to make any time.

I picked up that idea and added Bollywood masala and my dark and serious side to it. So now, one brother stammers and the other has a lisp. I thought that it would be exciting to make. But it wasn’t that easy. It was very tough and I had to work really hard. I would never like to make such a film again.

We wonder if the person is credited in the film. Because in publicity material there is no mention of any fifth person. But then, do you credit someone for story idea ? May be, or is it more than an idea. Unlike others, who makes sure to hide every source of inspiration, even if its remake, it feels good to read that Vishal is giving credit to the person who deserves it. Wish he had given out the writer’s name too.

You can read the full interview here.

Manas KatyalNo. You must! Manas Katyal ? One of the finalists of Rakhi Ka Sawayvar on NDTV Imgaine. The show that will baffle many generations of sociologists for sure. And Rakhi Sawant surely deserves the Lifetime Achievement Acting Award for this show. Because nobody can fake it better than her. And she also can’t do better than this. You have to watch the videos. With background music from bollwood. It doesn’t get funnier than this. Swayamvar moves to Delhi now. We are hooked and how!

And don’t miss the quote of the year – Item girl bahu hai, bahu item girl nahi hai!
