My Cousin Vinny’s plagiarism story – The real dope.

20th century Fox has sent a legal notice to B R Films ( Ravi Chopra) on plagiarism charges. For copying their film My Cousin Vinny and remaking it in hindi as Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai.

Ravi Chopra’s story – Since quite some time, Ravi Chopra has been telling everyone that they have officially bought the remake rights of the film My Cousin Vinny.

Real Dope – B R Films didnt buy the rights of My Cousin Vinny. They mailed the producers of the film stating that their film idea is similar to My Cousin Vinny. Everything else is different. Since there is no copyright on idea, 20th Century Fox asked Ravi Chopra to go ahead with his film.

20th Century Fox’s story – Now that the film is almost complete, the studio guys realised that its not only the idea but the film’s story is exactly the same as My Cousin Vinny.  Only few cosmetic changes have been made.

Where it stands – 2oth Century Fox has moved to Bombay High Court against B R Films. It has also sought Rs 7 crore as damages. Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai has Govinda, Tabu and Sushmita Sen in lead.

So, thats the real dope!

Well, there is nothing filmy here. But she deserves the headlines.  Shubhra Saxena has topped the UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission) Exams this year.

She quit a well paying IT job to sit for the IAS exams.  An IIT-Roorkee alumnus ( in Paper Technology 2002), Saxena joined Oracles in Hyderabad in 2002 but shifted to Noida when her software engineer husband Shashank began working for CSC. Soon, Shubhra too joined her husband in the same company, but she was not satisfied with her job.  Itching to serve the rural population, she would deliver free lectures to students who came to her for guidance on rural development schemes.  And then came the IAS dream.

Born in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareli, Saxena had most of her education in Jharkhand as her father was an engineer with Coal India.

And the cherry on the top is that this year, all the top three positions have been bagged by female candidates. At second position is Sharandeep Kaur who has done her MA from Punjab University. And Kiran Kaushal has secured the third position. Woohoo! Go Girls go!

Here is the first look of Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year. Ranbir Kapoor plays the lead role in this Yashraj Films production. The film is directed by Shimit Amin (standing, right) and written by Jaideep Shani ( sitting, left). The duo delivered the blockbuster hit Chak De India.

sharmila-tagoreYes,  finally some indian connection at Cannes Film Festival this year. Actress Sharmila Tagore will serve as a jury member in the festival’s feature film category.

The other desi connection at the festival this year is Uma Da Cunha (festival programmer) who will serve as jury member in Un Certain Regards section.

Tagore follows India’s Arundhati Roy, Aishwarya Rai and Nandita Das, who served on the Cannes jury in recent years. Though its been quite some time since an indian film made the cut at the festival.

This year’s festival jury will be headed by French actress, Isabelle Huppert. The other members of the jury are Asia Argento (Italy), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey), Lee Chang-Dong (South Korea), James Gray (US), Hanif Kureishi (UK), Shu Qi (Taiwan) and Robin Wright Penn (US).

More on Sharmila from Cannes Festival website : Sharmila Tagore started acting as a child in 1959, in the film Apu, directed by Satyajit Ray with whom she would shoot for other films, among which the Goddess, in competition at Cannes.

Star of the hindi cinema, she works with both auteur filmmakers and popular films produced in Mumbai. Sharmilla Tagore is also the great-granddaughter of the Indian poet Rabîndranâth Tagore.

Tagore, 52, currently heads the Central Board of Film Certification. 

The Cannes Film Festival is from May 13 to 24.

Kaun Bola is Arshad Warsi’ home production film. In an interview to Hindustan Times, this is what he said when asked about the similarties..

Thats the tragedy of my life. There are seevn people in the world who look alike and seven million people who think alike. 

The film’s script is original and I wrote it over a period of time thinking about how I would like a ghost film to be.

One day, a friend comes over and suggests I watch Ghost Town. To my surprise, ther were similarities.

The treatment of the story is similar. My charcater is liek Hwoopie Goldberg’s in Ghost. I can see the spirits around and communicate with them. The stylisation of the movies is alo quite alike. But the story is not the same.

Please, can we have a new excuse ? Circuit’s sense of reason, logic and excuse was never so bad! Where are you, Mr Hirani  ?

its-a-wonderful-after-life1We got our hands on the synopsis of Gurinder Chadha’s new film Its a Wonderful Afterlife. Shabana Azmi plays the lead role in the film and it also features Sally Hawkins.

Here is the synopsis…

MRS. SETHI, a widow, can’t bear the thought of her daughter being alone and unhappy. Okay, she’s a little plump and opinionated&but she’d make a great wife for some lucky man, if only she were given a chance. When MRS. SETHI can no longer stomach the rudeness of families who refuse her daughter, she takes matters into her own hands with the only way she knows…

Suddenly a police hunt begins for a serial murderer who cooks a killer curry. MRS. SETHI doesn’t feel too guilty until the SPIRITS of her victims come back to haunt her – complete with tandooried bodies and kebab skewered heads, they’re unable to be reincarnated until their murderer dies.

MRS. SETHI has no problem killing herself she’ll get to see her dead husband again but how can she go before her daughter is married? The SPIRITS realize that helping Mrs Sethi daughter find a suitable husband before the police catch her is their only chance for a wonderful afterlife.

It’s a big bloody wedding and a comic feast which takes the phrase ‘I could murder a curry’ to hysterical new heights.
