And if you go by Rotten Tomatoes score card, its a new low in Mira Nair’s career!

Amelia1

For Top Critics, the score is at 12%, lowest rating for any film by Mira Nair so far! Her last film The Namesake scored 87% on the same scale.

And if you have not been following the film and wondering whats Amelia, then read on.

Amelia posterAmelia is a biopic on the life of legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 in an attempt to finish a record breaking flight around the world. It stars Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor. When it comes to biopics, Hollywood has delivered some great ones on screen and with the big ones, they rarely go wrong,  and manage to pick up few Oscars too.

So what went wrong with Amelia ?

To quote from the review of Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers…

“Who wants a life imprisoned in safety?” Amelia asks in a voice-over. And you want to shout, “This movie does, honey.” There’s not a real or spontaneous minute in it.

Click on the Rotten Tomatoes link at the top of the page to read other reviews. Though Roger Ebert seems to be in minority this time as he has rated it 3/5. To quote from his review….

I’m not suggesting that Mira Nair and her writers, Ronald Bass and Anna Hamilton Phelan, should have invented anything for “Amelia.” It is right that they resisted any temptation. It’s just that there’s a certain lack of drama in a generally happy life.

Amelia” is a perfectly sound biopic, well directed and acted, about an admirable woman. It confirmed for me Earhart’s courage — not only in flying, but in insisting on living her life outside the conventions of her time for well-behaved females.

Aao Wish KarienWhat do you do when you have no films in hand ? Turn Producer. And thats the mantra of lot of out-of-work actors. Ask Dino Morea, Sushmita Sen, Sohail Khan among others. And the  new kid to join the club is  Aftab Shivdasani.

Aftab has started his own production house called Rising Sun Entertainment (Hmm..ambitious!) and their first film Aao Wish Karein is ready for release. Obviously it stars Aftab Shivdasani and his girlfreind Aamna Shariff and is directed by Glen Barreto (Jaane Hoga Kya ? Dont get us wrong. Thats the film he co-directed earlier, rite ? ). The story is about a kid who wants to grow up and suddenly one day his wish comes true.

The first promo of the film is out. All is well except the way they have decided to kill one of our favourite songs…sabse picche hum khade! Check out the video. It doesnt get any more boring than this! The song was earlier used in the film Lets Enjoy.

Rocket SinghHuh! Such a long wait! Just a few hours back, we wrote this post on what we saw in the trailer and how we are still searchig for it online. Finally some kind soul has done the good deed for the day!

The trailer/theatrical promo of Shimit Amin’s new film Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year is finally here. Its written by Jaideep Sahni, produced by Aditya Chopra (Yashraj Films) and stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shazahn Padamsee.

Though the trailer doesnt say or show much about the film but check it out! Ranbir Kapoor selling the film to you in just 60 seconds. Will you buy the ticket ? We surely will. Not based on the trailer though, which connects well with the concept of the film but is quite unimpressive otherwise.

What we know – As the name suggests, Rocket Singh (Ranbir Kapoor) is a salesman who is doing great at his work. The story is about how this salesman slowly becomes a conman and how he starts operating a parallel company within the same company in which he is working without the knowledge of others.

Though we are quite repulsive to Yash Raj Films’ Hadippa genrae of films but with Jaideep Sahni & Shimit Amin, we hope we will not be disppointed!

The first song promo of Kurbaan is out. The song is shukran allah. Its directed by Rensil D’Silva, produced by Karan Johar and stars Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Dia Mirza. Check it out!

Amitabh BachchanOne is growing insane with every passing day. Blame it on old age! The other is nasty and mean like any other tabloid. Whom to trust, thats difficult to judge, but we are loving it!

To celebrate Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday, Mid Day’s editor Abhijit Majumder did an interview with him and it was carried as the cover story on Sunday Mid Day (Oct 11). As expected, Bachchan’s interview was boring as always. Who’s the best director you’ve worked with? All. What are your favourite Bachchan films? Very, very tough. I like different films from my different phases. Women the world over have chased you. Have you chased any woman? No. And I don’t believe women chase me. Well, I did chase my wife and married her. Of all your female leads, was Rekha special? They’ve all been special. But people remember Rekha and your screen chemistry. I don’t know what screen chemistry is.

Huh! Boring as hell! Nothing new, nothing interesting! Only if it were all true. You can read the full interview here. The interview might be boring but post-interview it got interesting.

Later on, Bachchan got to know that the interview was recorded on a video camera too and he wasnt told about it. Bachchan felt it was a sting operation (see the pic. courtesy Mid Day)! On his blog, he attacked Abhijit Majumder and how! To quote from his blog…..

Two days later an FmXt member draws my attention to a video clip of my interview with the paper. I am surprised to hear it because I had never expected either the paper or any one else to have posted something which I would be unaware of. I saw the interview that has been put on air through a MidDay enterprise which works as a electronic news maker and now realize why Mr Majumdar wanted a personal meeting. He had placed a small ’sting’ camera on the table in front of me, without informing me that the interview was being video taped as well. He never told me that they had a video net facility in operation and that the recorded interview would find a place there.

Mr Majumdar, you were dishonest with me ! You insisted on a one to one interview not because you were being deprived of the opportunity of your ‘first’ with me, but because you had malefide intent of recording the interview to be used as a live input on a video electronic facility medium that your paper runs. Had you told me that you were recording this for a net broadcast I would never have minded. I was doing several electronic interviews every minute and another would have not made any difference. But by lying to me, the integrity that I had associated with you as an Editor for the paper you work for, has been damaged. Your entire effort, now that I look back, in assuring me of wanting to bring in change, of giving me the impression of an upright and erudite journalist has unfortunately been destroyed by this one incident. You have proven to me, yet again, that you or your tribe cannot be trusted.

Woohoo! You can read the full post by Amitabh Bachchan here.

In today’s edition of the paper, Abhijit Majumder has issued his clarification through a column and claims that he had not only told Bachchan about it but had even asked the same to his secretary. To quote Majumder…

Either you are lying or I am. I would like to believe it is neither; it’s just your memory playing tricks at twilight.

Which is acceptable.

What is not acceptable is loosely accusing a journalist who has learnt journalism the hard way and prides in his integrity of mala fide intention, lying and suchlike. If my intention were to malign you, I wouldn’t have spent a considerable amount of my time and energy trying to build bridges with you ignoring your past rants against MiD DAY in your blog, sought an interview and played it up on the front page.

Also, your accusation that what you said was misrepresented is facile because the interview in a pretty straightforward question -and-answer format and all that you said is recorded.

Click here to read the full column by Abhijit Majumder. He has also been tweeting about it. Check http://twitter.com/abhijitmajumder .

Next, its  Bachchan’s turn! Will he respond to Majumder’s letter ? Lets see. BTW, surprisingly we cant trace the Mid-Day video interview on youtube. It was online till yesterday! Or is youtube playing hide and seek with us ? You can search for Mid-Day’s video channel on youtube here.

UPDATE (17th Oct) – On his blog, Bachchan has responded to Majumder’s open letter. And this is getting better. To quote from his blog…

Mr Majumdar you say that you ‘had mentioned that both audio and video would be recorded’. That is undiluted garbage stinking rubbish. Every sms of yours seeking my interview is saved on my mobile. Every telephone conversation that you had with my office in this regard has been recorded. And, as you have yourself accepted, every move, action and word that you spoke on the day from the moment you entered my office to the time you left, is on video tape with me. No where, and I repeat, no where have you mentioned, that you would be doing a video recording. If you say your photographer Pradeep Dhiver was there, may I also inform you that my photographer Paresh Mehta and his two assistants were also there. You are not going to beat me by throwing names. These videos can be put up on my blog at the press of a button. Wanna’ see ?

And dear Sir, its not about your ‘word versus mine’, its about your video tape versus mine. And mine says that your conscience is not ‘clear’ at all. It is as densely clouded as the monsoon sky, so ironically visible on the day you came to take my interview.

If you were to look me straight in the eye and challenge me, I would not hesitate to look you straight back and justify. Put this cap of self righteous zeal over your own head and then come riding with me. I’ll whip your horse and you mine and lets see who rides the furthest and the longest.

You can read the full post here or in the comments section, as Ajay has put it there.

Only because we really don’t know how to respect our heroes. The man, the voice, the legend whom we all love so much and have so many memories. So many moments of life would have been so difficult if he wasn’t with us. Something for every occasion, for every one. At many times, when life seems impossible, I close my eyes and let his voice do the rest. They say, its magic, pure bliss. And it would be the same for generations to come. Can you imagine a world without the voice of Kishore Kumar?

But we still dont know how to give due respect to his memories, his life, his contribution to our life. 13 October is Kishoreda’s death anniversary. And as we rewind, it feels so pathetic that we dont even have a memorial for him. Few years back the MP Government made an announcement for the same, but its still not complete. Local people have also donated whatever they could but then its sarkari. Whatever work has happened there, people are more interested in flashing their names. And its a long list.

His home Gauri Kunj (Khandwa) still remains in pathetic condition. Some work has been done to restore it but its almost zilch. Take a look at the pics. We dont need to say more!

(There are two set of pics. First five rows are of his house. Next five rows of the memorial in the making. )

And here is a song for the occasion. Click on the play button, close your eyes and let the voice do the rest.

UNKNOWN ??

acid-factory-cut2Acid Factory is the new film by journalist turned filmmaker Suparn Verma (Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena). In an interview to Hindustan Times, when asked about the story of Acid Factory, Suparn had to say this…

Sanjay Gupta is known to look towards foreign films for inspiration. So which one was the muse for Acid Factory?

Sanjay (Gupta) had this amazing story given to him by a writer about seven people trapped inside an acid factory. They’ve lost their memories and in the terrifying present have just realised that there’s a killer amongst them and two others are his intended victims. We wove the screenplay around it. The challenge was in shooting the film in sequence and extracting performances from the group as a whole and not simply from individual actors. Before shooting, I made my cast read out their parts in front of each other and that created a bond between them.

You can read the full interview here. For us, the most interesting part of the interview was the first line – Sanjay had this amazing story given to him by a writer. We would like to know who is the writer ? And why is the poor writer not given credit in the interview ? Strangely, even in the IMDB full credit list of Acid Factory, there is no mention of the writer, though it tells you who is the stunt double and even has 2nd AD’s name.

Coming from Sanjay Gupta’s factory, most probably the writer doesnt exist! Or its all UNKNOWN! Read Dvd, copy, plagiarism! Unknown ? Yes, thats the name of the film. We havent seen it but to quote from IMDB, here is the plot of Unknown.

UnknownFive men wake up in a locked-down warehouse with no memory of who they are. They are forced to figure out who is good and who is bad to stay alive.

OR

How would you feel if: You were tied to a chair, In a locked-down warehouse, In the middle-of-nowhere, With no recollection what-so-ever of what happened, or what didn’t. To add to it, you’re not alone. There’s 4 others in the exact same state of mind. Some responsible for putting the others there BUT no one knows who’s who. Thats how this movie starts, getting grittier with every passing minute.

Now, scroll up and read the plot in Suparn’s answer. It sounds suspiciouly similar to Unknown. And coming from sanjay Gupta, dil hai ki manta nahi!

The film stars Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajapi, Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Diya Mirza, and Danny Denzongpa.

If you still have some doubts, check out the trailer of Unknown..

Gawd, even the trailer looks the same! And here is the Acid Factory trailer..

Are we jumping the gun again ? With Sanjay Gupta, who loves guns and bikes and babes, its justified! What say ? Or lets wait till this friday.

KurbaanThe theatrical trailer of Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi starrer Kurbaan is out. The film is directed by Rensil D’Silva and produced by Karan Johar.

Click on the play button. Am already head banging to the beats of kurbaan hua (the song starts at 1:45). Have a feel it will rock the charts!

The Japanese WifeRemember those good ol’ days of pen friendship ? And if you were born before the internet era and ever experienced the joy of pen friendship, then you must read Kunal Basu’s story The Japanese Wife. Its one of the most beautiful love stories I have read in recent times. Simple, serene, heartfelt and fascinating. The book is a collection of 12 short stories.

BTW, I bought the book because I loved the cover. The paper quality and the pic looks and feels gorgeous (not so in the pic that I have posted on the left). Call me mad but I love all these, and there is nothing like the smell of a new book. Instead of reading between the lines, try putting your nose between the pages once!

Aparna Sen’s new film is based on the same story and it has the same title The Japanese Wife. The film stars Rahul Bose, Raima Sen, Moushumi Chatterjee and Japanese actress Chigusa Takaku. It is in English, Bengali and Japanese. And here is the synopsis of the film….

The Japanese Wife2Snehmoy (Rahul Bose) and Miyage (Chigusa Takaku) are pen friends who exchange wedding vows through letters. Fifteen years pass but they never meet. Yet the bond of marriage is strong between them. This unusual relationship comes under a cloud when a young widow, Sandhya (Raima Sen), comes to stay with Snehmoy along with her eight-year-old son. Snehmoy and the little boy bond and the arithmetic teacher discovers the joy of palpable bonds and fatherhood. There develops an inexplicable thread of understanding with Sandhya too. But what happens to the love story of Senhmoy and Miyage ? Will not spoil it for you. Read the book or wait for the film.

Lil late on this but just figured out from a friend that the trailer of the film is already online. Take a look. Not sure why they are using the word “grand” in the trailer. Its just the opposite…its intimate! The film has been ready for quite sometime but the producers (SaReGaMa) has been sitting and shitting on it! No clue why!

They got money. They even got Big B for Bigg Boss. If rumour mills are to be believed, its for some 100 crore! But where is the Big Idea dude ? A new music video featuring Amitabh Bachchan for the new season of Bigg Boss is out. But what a fuckall video! Its F in capital and bold!

Its easy to spot an  idea there but the execution is of nursery standard! Tacky to say the least. Can someone from Colors enlighten us who shot this video ? Dont follow tv too much but have seen some of the best music montage/videos on Sony TV. Their shows may not get TRP’s but have seen some great work as far as promotional videos are concerned.

Take a look at the video. The song is in Amitabh Bachchan’s voice. Even though that doesnt help much.
