Finally, the official trailer of Vasan Bala‘s debut feature Peddlers is out. The film is all set to premiere at Cannes International Critics’ Week.

So what works and what doesn’t? Since he is a good friend, i might be biased. But let me try. The visuals look gorgeous, there is a sudden tension in the mood but it all looks calm on the surface. Great! And the ‘ud jayega‘ raw vocals adds to the creepiness. But the text seems to be too vague. Actually it’s the same as that cryptic synopsis of the film. Why? Who does that? Also, font is dull and boring. And it comes on the visuals. Found it too be distracting.

Prashant Bhargava’s debut feature Patang has been doing the rounds of international film festivals since last year and the latest one was the prestigious Ebertfest.

It stars Seema Biswas, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sugandha Garg and Aakash Mahayera, and has been shot by Shanker Raman.

The film will be finally in US theatres from June 15th. And here’s a new trailer of the film.

A family saga set against the colorful spectacle of the Uttarayan, India’s largest kite festival, The Kite is a kaleidoscopic whirlwind of energy, romance, and turmoil. A businessman arrives in Ahmedabad for a surprise visit to his once grand family home, bringing with him his daughter and some unexpected news for the family’s future. Amongst the flurry of preparations and the energy of the festival itself, the transformative and intersecting tales of six characters unfold.

If you are not active on social networking platforms, you might have missed the two videos which are getting lot of attention. First came the mash-up of The Dark Knight Rises and Gangs of Wasseypur as  “The Dark Knight Rises in Wasseypur”. Great fun!

This is done by Sumit Purohit.

And insipired by the Dark Knight mash-up, came “The Avengers Of Wasseypur”. This is done by Sudarshan Ashok.

 

In the last few years Marathi cinema has done everything that Hindi cinema wasn’t doing. And most importantly, tackling subjects which are rooted. As they say, if we don’t tell our stories, who will? A good marathi film is not a surprise any more. The question is how good it is? Here’s a trailer of a new film called Pune 52. And it looks damn interesting.

To quote from the official release, Pune 52 is a noir thriller about a private detective living in Pune circa 1992, whose life undergoes a dramatic change when he takes up a case that is both dangerously complex and deeply personal.

Starring national award winning actor Girish Kulkarni, Sonali Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar, Pune 52 is set to release by the end of 2012.

It’s produced by the makers of films such as Valu, Vihir, Deool and Harishchandrachi Factory and is the debut feature of writer/director Nikhil Mahajan.

Here’s a small note by the director on the making of the film..

Like most middle class Maharashtrian brahmin boys, I went to do engineering after std. 12th. Took me 2 years to realize that I suck at it and another 2 years to convince my parents that I have to get out of it. So I dropped out and went on to work at Ramu’s factory as a screenwriter on a project that never took off.

I then went to Sydney and graduated in Film and came back. Got a job with the Hinduja Group’s In Entertainment as a writer where I was writing Tamil superhero films for a living. As much as I enjoyed doing that, I had to write a film about someone who aspires to be a hero. So started writing Pune 52.

Girish was the first person I approached to act in the film. He had doubts because of the content, but still was game for it. They were still shooting Deool then. I went to around 40 producers who all turned it down because it was too adult for the conventional marathi audience’s taste. Eventually Umesh and Girish decided to produce it themselves. And luckily the script got selected at Primexchange at IFFI. Then there was no looking back.

Its being shot by Jeremy Reagan, my friend from Film School and is edited by Abhijeet Deshpande. Stars Girish Kulkarni and Sonali Kulkarni and has background score by Hyun Jung Shim ( who composed for Oldboy) The film has 2 songs, composed by Atif Afzal who has done the music of the soon to release Prague.

Sorry to flood the blog with so many back to back posts on Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely. But two reasons – Cannes doesn’t happen everyday. Nor do Indian films qualify there regularly. Also, the information is coming out bit by bit.

First came the news of its selection at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section. Then, the official synopsis and stills (Click here). And now the teasers of the film.

It was suppose to be Vikram’s big bollywood debut. But what actually happened? Well, we all know the story. The general feedback was that the Tamil version was better than the Hindi one. In the Tamil version, Vikram played Beera, the same role which was played by Abhishek Bachchan in the Hindi version.  And a film buff cut a very cool video – put Vikram in double role. Watch the video.

The much anticipated trailer of Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai is finally out. Have a look.

So far Dibakar’s record has been cent percent – 3/3. Will he deliver once again? Going by the trailer, it surely seems so. But then, political films are a different beast.

SEZ, activism, murder, accident, conspiracy theories and the mess and madness kicks in. And then a ball drops in – yeh khelne ki jagah hai kya? Aha, that Dibakar touch. So refreshing to see Emraan Hashmi getting out of his comfort factor and doing it without anything remotely sufiyana. Wouldn’t be surprised if he overshadows Abhay Deol. And Kalki looks perfectly vulnerable.

Strangely, the text doesn’t mention Khosla Ka Ghosla. It says “from the director of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Love Sex Aur Dhoka”. Why would you not mention KKG?

Kasam khoon ki khayee hai….yeh shahar nahi Shanghai hai – Ok, am sold. Now bring it on.

Writing credits include Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar Banerjee and unlike others it mentions the book Z by Vassilis Vassilikos.

At the end of it the only thing that doesn’t sound convincing is the title – Shanghai.

Continuing with our initiative to get directors to open up about their films after the film has released, this time we decided to stalk Kahaani’s director Sujoy Ghosh. And he was happy to accommodate us. In twitter language, our intention was to #AttackSujoyG, but everything changed when we reached his office.

Sujoy had fever, looked almost dead and there were tablets and syrup on his table. How can you attack a man in such a state? Plus, Hangla’s biryani and rolls make us go soft. But we decided that let’s record the conversation. And then just after first few minutes of recording, a filmy twist happened – Sujoy’s non-stop hiccups. We paused and re-started again after some 20-25mins. And by that time Sujoy was getting late for another meeting, so we quickly squeezed in whatever we could.

In the video, we discuss reviews, origin of the film, audience ko kya chahiye, dhokabaaz flashback, promo vs film, Bengali characters talking in Hindi, six writers – how does it work, spontaneous school of acting, Aditya Chopra and making it commercial (YRF was suppose to produce it), another cheating – text on screen & Darshan Zariwala’s designation, life versus cinema, cinematography & shooting style, working with a new team, binito Bob, IB so blind, why the informer, Ray’s cinema – running hot water and other homage, life after big flops, copying from films including Chura Liya Hai Tumne, what’s next – Aranyer Din Ratri and Jhankaar Beats, life at 46 and his love for “Sir” Amitabh Bachchan.

One of my favourite albums of all time is Gulzar-Pancham. I bought the cassettes first and then the CDs. The 2-CD pack is compilation of songs written by Gulzar and composed by R D Burman. But what makes the album special is the introduction to every song by Gulzar. We all know that he can weave magic with words. But the way he narrates it, the way he pours out every bit of nostalgia in his narration, it creates an intoxicating mood. Years later he did another similar album – Amrita Pritam recited by Gulzar. The magic was still the same. And now, there’s a new album – Tera Bayaan Ghalib. Here’s Rohit‘s recco post on the same.

Anything, be it a new song or a poem recitation or a book release or a film by Gulzar sahab guarantees that it will have an aroma of freshness and nostalgia in it. This music album quietly made it’s way into the mind space and thanks to Pavan and Sa Re Ga Ma’s online store I could get a hold of the original tracks.

First up, please know that this is not a ‘tribute to Jagjit Singh’ sort of an album by Gulzar sahab. It goes a step further. Gulzar sahab has convinced Jagjit Singh to sit and recite/sing some lines for all of us and what tribute do we want anyway? Jagjit Singh is still there. Very much there. Gulzar sahab has read/recited Ghalib’s letters enacting as Ghalib and it is NOT a commentary on him. It’s a fact that we can’t get enough of Gulzar sahab‘s voice and when you hear him modulating his voice and enacting Ghalib, you will feel the words with him.

Since the album is aimed at giving a peek to all us in the life and times of ‘Ghalib’, Gulzar sahab has plucked many a gems from his TV Serial on Ghalib in the voice of Ghazaljit Singh.

The album starts with a track that was featured in the TV serial (but wasn’t available in music cassettes or CDs). After this, Gulzar sahab recites some couplets from Mirza Ghalib. The mithaas in his voice will remind you of the times when you were dipping your senses into your favorite food and talking about your favorite person. The album then turns to GhazalJit Singh’s rendition of ‘Har ek baat pey’. The difference (nitpickers like me will notice) is a faint note on the keyboard in the background which is unlike the versions already available with us all. This version ends where GhazalJit Singh ends the recitation in the original.

It won’t be fair to give out the flow of what Gulzar sahab discusses in the album because it will spoil the mood of anyone who listens it. So I won’t go into much detail. All I will say that there is a difference between telling and narrating. Gulzar sahab narrates. Beautifully. Many a times you won’t be able to realize that the ghazal has started and the narration has stopped. It’s all in the same fabric. Like for example, there is a part where Gulzar sahab is talking about the ‘patang baazi’ of Ghalib and the melodious flute makes an entry and GhazalJit Singh recites a line of ‘woh firaq aur wo visaal kahan’.  Listen how dearly and affectionately Gulzar sahab goes about telling us why Ghalib chose Ghalib and not ‘Asad’ as his pen name. GhazalJit Singh comes again to recite the beautiful couplet ‘Dost gham’ (which wasn’t available earlier in Music cassettes or CDs of the serial).

Using Ghalib’s lines to create the atmosphere of the old times is a great idea and GhazalJit Singh’s voice comes as a compliment. You can’t help but feel that it’s completely unnatural to live in a world where GhazalJit Singh is no more. The album is full of those unreleased nazms/couplets in the voice of GhazalJeet Singh.

The narrative spans across life and times of Ghalib including the 1857 and how Ghalib shut himself out during that period. And how Delhi was never the same, more or less like Ghalib. There is a lot of pain, especially when Gulzar sahab touches the ‘7 deaths’ in Ghalib family…of all his kids.

Towards the end of the album when Gulzar sahab speaks about old age, the depth of his narration will move you, and on top of it Jagjit Singh’s (unreleased) nazm might move you to tears. You will get goosebumps when you will come across the famous Ghalib composition ‘sab kahan kuch’ because Gulzar sahab accompanies Jagjit (Ghazaljit Singh) in the same. This is Gold. Probably purest form of Gold.

This is not a music album. It’s a melodious session with Gulzar sahab and GhazalJit Singh full of conversations, nazms and ghazals. Anyone with a mild inclination towards Gulzar sahab/Ghalib or GhazalJit Singh will find this album a treasure. A treasure which you will hold on to forever.

You are likely to come across a lot of familiar ghazals in this album but the difference is – this time you live the ghazal rather than just listening to it.

Jameson Empire had announced a contest for shorts – remake any cult film in just 1 minute. It’s called DISS (Done In Sixty Seconds) and Anurag Kashyap was on the jury.  They have just announced the two films which will compete with films from across the world at the the Jameson Empire Award in London.

The two winners are Mayank Shethiya’s Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind by the team of Zain Matcheswalla, Vidyut Singh Jaiswal, Arati Kadav and Zenish Mehta. Click on the play button and have a look.
