The first look of Shyam Benegal’s new film Well Done Abba is out. The film stars Boman Irani, Minissha Lamba and Samir Dattani. The film was recently screened at Montreal Film Festival and will have its next screening at London film festival. Its written by Ashok Mishra and is based on two short stories – ‘Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi’ by Jeelani Bano and ‘Phulwa Ka Pul’ by Sanjeev.

And here is the synopsis of the film….

Armaan Ali, played by comic hero Boman Irani, is a middle aged driver for a city executive. He takes a month’s leave and, when he arrives back at work three months later, his boss, understandably, threatens to sack him. To save his job, charming Armaan spins a fabulous story of why he was delayed in getting his daughter married.

Fable or truth, the boss isn’t quite sure, but the story revolves around a central question – how a well, once dug, can be stolen? Unearthed in Benegal’s part comedy, part political satire, is a hilarious and poignant depiction of the double dealing and corrupt middle men intrinsic to Indian rural politics. Meanwhile, at the heart of the story is a delightful romance between Armaan’s daughter and a young, honest mechanic who saves the day.

AADMI KI AURAT AUR ANYA KAHANIYAAKAAAK ? It’s  Aadmi Ki Aurat Aur Anya Kahaniyaan! In english, its The Man’s Woman and Other Stories.

Amit Datta ? Yes, the same FTII graduate who has directed films like Kra Ma Sha, Sha Tra Gya and Ma Pa. Has a distinct quirky visual signature style. If you havent seen his films, do watch. Available on FTII’s Lensight DVDs. Can get it from FTII or Rudra Media. Google, you will get it.

Kra Ma Sha also bagged two National Awards this year. One for cinematography (Savita Singh) and audiography (Ajit Singh Rathore).

His new film AKAAAK was given a special mention in the Orizzonti (New Horzons) category at the just concluded Venice Film festival. The Orizzonti Prize was given to Pepe Diokno (Philippines) for Engkwentro. And the Orizzonti Prize for Best documentary to DU Haibin (China) for 1428.

Havent seen the film but from the synopsis it looks like Amit is moving in similar domain again….

The film is a series of three episodes which explore the relationship between men, women and the physical and mental spaces they inhabit. A man lives in a rented room with tree branches by his window. He fears that birds and snakes may enter in his room through the window, but would like the squirrels to visit him. In a story narrated within ruins, a man wants to erase the name of his wife, which is tattooed on her own forearm, and in his anxiety to erase it, he even considers going so far as to cut off the arm of his wife; but his friend has better suggestions. In the dark suburbs, a woman sleeping under a glowering bulb is forcefully hired off to a young man waiting for his friend. While the young man wants to know her story, she only wishes to sleep.

Road, MovieFinally, here comes Desi Cinema Paradiso. No, make that Cinema Para-desi!

The first trailer of Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie is out. The film stars Abhay Deol, Tannistha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik. The screenplay was selected for the L’Atelier section at the Cannes Film Festival 2006. Its having its world premiere at the ongoing Toronto Film Festival. Deol plays a truck driver who makes a life changing journey across India as he hits the road with  a travelling cinema.

And here is the 2min trailer..

And the synopsis of the film..

A young man’s journey into the unknown becomes the odyssey of a lifetime.

Vishnu, a restless young man, comes up with a plan to save his father’s faltering hair-oil business. It’s madness: an excursion into the unknown, driving an old, decrepit lorry across a harsh but stunning terrain.

His personal journey becomes an odyssey across the mythical Indian landscape as he discovers he’s transporting not just a battered vehicle, but an old touring cinema.

The expedition takes on carnivalesque proportions of endurance as Vishnu confronts a young runaway, a wandering, old entertainer with a bear, a beautiful gypsy woman, corrupt cops and a notorious water-lord.

The key to his freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two 40-year-old film projectors that lie inside the bowels of the lorry. Like “1001 Nights” if the films are good he gets to live and move on, otherwise he faces death in the isolated countryside.

The road trip is to change the life of each of the travellers, especially that of Vishnu, who discovers life, love and laughter along the Indian highway.

Ranbir kapoorYes, thats the goss doing the rounds.

Ranbir Kapoor has completed Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh – Salesman of the year. He has moved on to Prakash Jha’s Rajneeti. And after Rajneeti, its Siddharth Anand’s new film Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka Chopra. Also, in the pipeline is Mera Jahaan co-starring Deepika Padukone by debutant Vikram Singh.

But here is the most interesting news. According to Filmfare, Ranbir Kapoor is reportedly doing Mani Ratnam’s next film in which he plays a pakistani immigrant in America. The film is not titled yet. What we know is that he was offered a role in Raavan, but he refused.

Mani is currently busy with Raavan and will be be free by next year after the release of the film. By that time, Ranbir will also be done with both Siddharth Anand and Vikram’s films. If it works out, interesting!

One more casting news.  It seems Shaadi Ali is set to return with Tevar ( Is this planned as triology..Tashan,Tevar…atleast it sounds so) and most probably Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor will team up again. Shaad is busy assissting Mani on Raavan these days.

UPDATE – According to Mumbai Mirror, the  title of the film is Azaan and its a pro-muslim take. The story is about Azaan, the name of the lead character as he will be born during Azan. Click here to read the complete report.

But why is the video so unimganitively done! And those words on screen, kabhi hai kabhi nahi!

And here is the best thing about the album. The music is by Shankar Ehsaan Loy but the song Iktara is composed by Amit Trivedi ( Aamir and Dev D). And with just one song, Amit kills it! If you havent heard the song, click the play button. Sung by Kavita Seth and Amitabh Bhattacharya. The second video has the full song.

Chetan BhagatIf you like Chetan Bhagat or if you think he is the best thing to happen to desi writing or if you are desperately waiting for his next book Two States, then this place is injurious to you health. Kindly move on to next blog!

In Bollywood and Mumbai’s first class train compartements, people read only two authors. Chetan Bhagat and Paulo Coehlo. People have only two favourite books – The Alchemist and Five Point Someone. And I hate the smell of both the books! Chetan Bhagat is the shittiest thing to happen in desi writing in recent time. He is, what i call, potty writer! You read it while doing potty, finish it by the time your potty is over and then use it as tissue paper! Pure junk like McDonald’s and priced also at the same range! If someone is willing to sign my cousin who is in 5th standard, do let me know, he can also write the same.

No imagination, no thought, bad writing. Period. But too much of publicity! The three books by him are three mistakes of his life! And according to news reports, Raj Kumari Hirani’s Three Idiots is based on Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. WTF!! How is that possible ? I could not digest the news. Spent sleepless nights. How could Hirani do it ?

Its official! Vidhu Vinod Chopra bought the rights of the book. Bus aur kya! Chetan Bhagat went on promotional over drive. Some million interviews on how the next Aamir Khan film is based on his book and blah blah blah. Pics in some million poses and more!

I was surprsied, confiirmed it and found that its just the setting and nothing beyond that. But on one side it was me and the other side it was Chetan Bhagat and his million interviews. Nobody was willing to believe me that VVC and Hirani bought the rights only to be safe, so that nobody can question them later on.

Finally, Raj Kumar Hirani has clarified in this interview (read the second last question. hav copy pasted it here also)  to Mumbai Mirror that the film and the book is only 5% similar! Yes, just five percent!

Q. How true are you keeping 3 Idiots to the book by Chetan Bhagat Five Point Someone?

A. 3 Idiots is inspired from the book but it is completely different. I would say just five per cent of it is the same. Books and films are different. So the moment you decide to pick up a book and make a film as it is, it will be a disaster. It’s a nice book, but it’s anecdotal and films can’t be anecdotal. It has to have a story. The reason I mention this is because people should not go to the theatre thinking, we are going to watch Five Point Someone and later find out that it’s a completely different film.

Game over, Mr Bhagat! Am much relieved. Now can that potty writer Chetan Bhagat just shut the fuck up! Enough of him and his mistakes!

Here is the first look of Ken Ghosh’s new film Chance Pe Dance. It stars Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D’Souza. Its produced by UTV.

Chance Pe Dance

Akshay Kumar & Nikhil AdvaniIts Level 2 of Khatroon Ke Khiladi. Akshay Kumar is back on tv. And Nikhil Advani is back with Akshay Kumar again.

According to Indiafm, their new film is titled Patiala House and will star Anushka Sharma and Rishi Kapoor alongwith Akshay Kumar. The name Patiala House sounds like a sequel to Singh Is King but it seems its a father-son story set in Southall, UK.

The son gives up his dream to save his father’s reputation, until he meets a girl who gives him the strength to stand up for what he believes. It’s about second chances.

Second chances ?? Yeah, pun intended ? LOL!! Nikhil really must be praying for this second chance!  Only if he can reduce his snob value a bit!

Warna we will sing again…

from chandni chowk to chai-na,

mujh-ko kuch samajh aai-na!

Whats Your Raashee ?WTF!!! Yes, that was our first reaction when we heard about it! We know that Ashutosh Gowariker cant make films less than 3 hours and he got it right in his last three films – Jodha Akbar, Swades and Lagaan. All three films were longer than 3 hours.

But, Harman Baweja is not Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Hrithik Roshan! Also, there is no A R Rahman this time! The songs are fuckall, atleast we didnt like a single song in the What’s Your Raashee album. And this must be the longest romcom in the history of cinema! We are praying and how!

If gossipmongers are to be believed Ashutosh Gowariker is not happy with 3hrs 20 mins, he wants to keep it at 3hrs 40mins! Is he planning a filmy version of Mujhe Iss Film Se Bachao!

The promos look bad, the songs suck, Harman is horrible but we still want to see the film. Because we trust the director and 12 avtaars of Priyanka seems interesting idea! Very few actors get to do something like this! Sincerly hoping that Gowariker hasnt lost it like many others!
