anurag kashyapWoohoo! The poster boy of desi indie cinema is going places and how!

The jury list of this year’s Venice Film Festival is out. Two-time Golden Lion and Oscar-winning director Ang Lee will serve as the jury president in the international competition section. He will be joined by French actress Sandrine Bonnaire, Italian film-maker Liliana Cavani, American director Joe Dante, Italian songwriter and singer Luciano Ligabu and our writer/director Anurag Kashyap (Dev D, No Smoking, Black Friday ).

Aha….finally an Indian name on international film circuit without L’Oreal and other shit! It’s been long.

Venice Film Festival will run from September 2-12.

sanjay_leela_bhali2Woohooo! We are not sure who all have gone mad but we surely are going insane since we heard the news. And since its directly from horse’s mouth, we have no choice but to believe it.

Rs 35 crore!!!! And that too, post-Saawariya! Welcome to Bhansali Blues! Some men have all the luck to do all the Leela! And some like UTV make it possible too.

UTV is producing the film Guzaarish. The budget of the film will be Rs 60-65 crore and the major chunk will go to director’s pocket. It seems Bhansali also managed to convince Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai to take a pay cut and so extra goodies will go to  SLB’s account.

Btw, a huge set of the film has been erected in Mumbai’s Mehboob Studio. If gossipmongers are to be believed, the story is set in Goa.

Also, because of Guzaarish, Vibhu Puri’s Chenab Gandhi, to be produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been postponed to next year. Vibhu assisted Bhansali on Saawariya. Chenab Gandhi will star Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Rajeev Khandelwal.

We at FC, have an interesting history with Guzaarish. Click here and here to know more. Story, plot details, denials, headlines and some more.

cinemaWe are the world, if we go by the mind-boggling numbers regarding Indian cinema. Chew on and see if you can digest!

We hav tried to simplify the numbers as mentioned in Focus 2009 – World Film Market Trend, a report by  European Audiovisual Observatory, a public service body gathering and distributing information on the audiovisual industry. ( figures according to 2007-2008 releases)

 – The Indian film industry produced 1132 feature films in 2007. In comparison, the American film industry in 2008 produced 520 feature films, Japan 418 and China 400.

– India also has the cheapest movie tickets for any major film producing nation.

 – For theatre admissions, India’s count was 3.3 billion for 2008 and was higher than the combined total of the next nine biggest film producing countries. The US was the only other country to have more than a billion admissions.

– India has the cheapest ticket price averaging $0.5 (Rs 22). The average price of a ticket in the nine other big film producing countries ranges between $2.2 in China and $11.7 in Japan.

– The low ticket price accounts for the fact that gross box office collections of the Indian film industry – $1.8 billion in 2007 – are behind those of the US and Japan. With $9.7 billion collected at the American box offices in 2008, the US tops the charts followed by Japan with $1.9 billion.

– Among the major film markets, India is the only one in which Hollywood blockbusters, even after being dubbed in various local languages, have not managed to give local movies a serious challenge.

 – Not one of the top 10 films in India ranked by admissions or box office collections was from the US. In contrast, 8 of the top 10 films in the UK and Spain originated from America, Germany had 7 US films in its top 10, Korea and Italy 6 each, Japan 4, France 3 and China 2.

– In terms of multiplex screens – USA has over 29,000 screens, India has only 850, ahead only of Korea among the top 10 film markets of the world.

Aha…the melodrama in our DNA……we, the billion plus!

Pakhi & Abbas TyrewalaHis debut feature Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na went on to become big hit. We thought it was strictly ok, serving the bollywood’s oldest  cliche ek ladka aur ladki dost nahi ho sakte hai kya! But then, when you cater to U-25 with popcorn and cola flick, High School Whimsical is also superhit.

Abbas Tyrewala was well known writer before he turned to direction. Ashoka (D), Maqbool, Chupke Se, Munnabhai MBBS (D), Main Hoon Na (S&D), Salaam Namaste (D), Shikhar and De Taali. And now he is busy directing 1-800-Love, written by his wife Pakhi who also stars in it, opposite John Abraham. If the gossipmongers at Producer Madhu Mantena’s office are to believed, Tyrewala has been paid Rs 5 crore as direction fees for the film! woohoo!

Post JTYJN, Tyrewala is flying quite high. If you thought Farah and her brother Sajid Khan are loudmouths, you need to attend a session of Tyrewala Talks! Gyaan-guru, who has solutions for everything. And now to help Tyrewala, Pakhi’s full family is involved in the making of the film. Her mother, who is a drama teacher, is coaching John Abraham for getting the dialogues right. Knowing Abraham’s acting talent, we surely reccomend few more teachers. Also, Pakhi’s brother has come onboard. Not sure, in which capacity.

Producer Mantena ia making sure that every demand of the director, his dear biwi and his biwi‘s family is met!

PS – We are yet to confirm this. Have heard that 1-800-Love is not Pakhi’s big screen debut. She was in Hansal Mehta’s film Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai. If anyone can confirm it, as we haven’t seen the film.

anurag kashyapHis “khooni” cameo in Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance got the loudest laughs. And he will soon be seen in a full fledged role of a UP gangster in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Shaagird. And then there is Sudhir Mishra’s Tera Kya Hoga Johnny.

And it seems Kashyap’s keeda will continue for some more. He has been signed to act in Onir’s short film Abhimanyu, part of the five short films that Onir is planning on sexual abuse. Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, Shernaz Patel and Radhia Apte also star in it. Anurag being himself a victim of child sex abuse, has been very candid about it and has always raised his voice on the issue.

Whats more, we have heard that he is also writing one of the five stories and he isnt taking a single penny for his acting-writing. He is also contributing to the budget of the film as co-producer.

BTW, if you want to contribute to Onir’s film, click here to read more.

TGIF! Too much of news flow today. Some bolly quickies!

1. After almost two decades, Nana Patekar will soon return to direction to direct his son Malhar. The film will be produced by Prakash Jha.

2. Bit late but better to keep track. Agyaat is in High Court! Writer Sajit Warrier filed a complaint with Film Writers Association that Agyaat is his script. He was writing it for Ramu long back. And after few years, he suddenly got to know that the film is ready. FWA told Ramu to pay him 9 Lakhs. Ramu has moved to High Court. 6. Yashraj Films has denied the news that they have signed Salman Khan for an upcoming film.

Anil AmbaniAnil Ambani is all set to make all his hollywood debut.  He met with DreamWorks Studios partners Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider on wednesday and announced one of the biggest deals in recent times. We have simplified all the details for easy read.

– The new motion picture company formed between Reliance BIG Entertainment and DreamWorks has been functioning since November 2008 from DreamWorks’ office in Los Angeles, California.

Steven Spielberg– There will be an initial investment of $825 million, available for film production. $325 million would be Reliance’s contribution, $150 million from Disney and the rest would be from banks and financial institutions.

 – DreamWorks will eventually make 5-6 films per year with the funding.

–  The Walt Disney Company will handle marketing and distribution of the films around the world, except for India where Reliance BIG Entertainment will have the distribution rights.

 – DreamWorks will start the first film for the new studio later this year.

In India, Big Pictures has not been able to produce a single decent film so far. With deep pockets, they are willing to put money wherever they can spot a star. On their own, they havent developed any film/script/property. Few months back, they shut down their writing department as well and fired all the wrirters. A classic case of Big is NOT always better.
