And yes, its an official selection. The film will be screened in the Un Certain Regard Section of the festival. Its NOT like flying KITES at Cannes!

Udaan is directorial debut of Vikramaditya Motwane and is produced by Sanjay Singh and Anurag Kashyap. It stars Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor, Rajat Barmecha and Ayan Boradia. Its a coming of age story revolving around father-son relationship.

Motwane co-wrote Dev D with Anurag Kashyap and has worked in various capacity (read sound, choreography & more) before that. And he must be the only common factor between the cinema of Bhansali (sound designer n AD on Devdas) & Kashyap!

Nikhil Advani had signed him earlier and was supposed to produce Motwane’s debut film. But somehow the film never happened. Thats when Kashyap stepped in and decided to produce Udaan. Nikhil Advani went on to produce Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai! What a deserving tight slap!

Bit late on this one. But if you havent seen it, do check out. So, is this test drive for Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet ? Kashyap has been talking to Aamir Khan for the film and then suddenly this tvc comes on air. Or are they testing each other and their working style ? Its shot by Anurag Kashyap, has music by Amit Trivedi, lyrics by Gulzar and sung by singer Mohan. After Dil toh baccha hai ji, Gulzarsaab now puts the dil in jeb! Wah Wah!

This is the first tvc of the series. Three more 20 seconder films will be released in the coming weeks.

And you know where! If not, ask the pirates. If you still cant find it, then also its fine. Dont worry, wait for its theatrical release. But the news is shocking for sure.

If the big boys could not save Wolverine, whats the big deal about Johnny. Recently it happened the same with Anurag Kashyap’s Paanch also which was rumoured to be leaked out by the director himself because Anurag was tired of waiting for its theatrical release. Ashutosh Gowariker’s Whats Your Raashee was also leaked out before its theatrical release. Its another matter that nobody wanted to watch it for free also.

Tera Kya Hoga Johnny is directed by Sudhir Mishra and stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kay Kay Menon, Soha Ali, Shahana Goswami, Karan Nath and Sikandar who plays the lead role of Johnny.

But it seems both the director and producer are clueless about it. Or is it Sudhir Mishra who was frustrated waiting for its release, got inspired by his good freind Kashyap and leaked it out himself ? Or it got leaked out through a festival screener ? The film was doing the festival round. Aha, conspiracy theories and more! Whatever it is, but now Johnny seriously needs to worry ki ab kya hoga

2009 – The Master of Feel Bad started the year delivering his career’s first hit and the Master of Feel Good Cinema ended the year with a recording breaking monster hit! Aha, not that bad if we count only the boundaries. After the musical notes of the year, we sat down to discuss the filmy notes of the year. Here it is – the good, the bad and the fuglies!

1. Best Credit Roll – If ever a credit roll said something so simply and superbly, this is it. Luck By Chance. Also great debut by Zoya Akhtar.

2. Anurag Kashyap turned musical and how! More than a dozen songs and we discovered Amit Trivedi.

3. Anurag Kashyap – 2009 belongs to only one director. Dev D, Gulaal and even Paanch finally got a release, you know where. Whats more, he finished shooting his next film That Girl In Yellow Boots in just 13 days. Aur bolo ?

PS : The same Anurag Kashyap wrote the dialogues for Kurbaan ! Strange bedfellows remained strange.

4. Nobody, we repeat nobody, can save Harman/Hurrman/Harmann/Harrman/Whatever it is Baweja.

5. Wooden Film of the Year – New York. Three good looking woods with zero expression.

6. Ranbir Kapoor – Dude of the year! He is not only working with best directors of bollywood but delivering his best too. Cool & confused, fool & romantic, middle class & lost – he did it all.

7.Imran Luck Khan – The poster boy of 2008 is light years behind Ranbir. He only talks cool and acts still uncool.  Competition, whats that ?

8. Imtiaz Ali has only one story to tell. The journey of cool and confused lovers on the verge of marriage. First time, they were about to mary. Second time, they were close to marriage. This time, they finally married and then solved their problem. More here and here.

9. Samir Karnik got money to make one more movie. Who ? Where ? Why ? How ?

10. Rani Mukherjee’s career is over. Hadippa!

11. Multiplex cinema & hits are not everything. Its a big myth. Ask the makers of Wanted. Or is it only Salman Khan ?

12. And if its Salman Khan, why Main Aur Mrs Khanna packed up in just two days ? As they say, nobody knows anything. And what was UTV smoking ?

13. Overrated Gimmicky shit of the year – Paa. More ramblings here.

14. R Balki should stick to making tv commercials. One idea and thats it. He also told the same story again. Smart & dying child bring lovers back together. Age gap somewhere. Check.

15. Akshay Kumar’s bubble busted and how!. He failed everywhere. Chandni Chowk, China, Hollywood, under water, inside or outside Tasveer.

16. The Invisible Director – Who is Anurag Singh ? Does anyone knows him ? The man who put the last nail in the coffin of Rani’s acting career. Hadippa!

17. Sanjay Gupta and gang (read Suparn) are still copying. Even the promos! Now the Unknown ones! More here.

18. Suresh Nair – the only writer to have two big films releases on the same friday. Aladin & London Dreams and both flopped.

19. Underrated Film – Sooni Tarporevala’s delightful Little Zizou, where all the possible parsis united to turn bollywood into pollywood! ( Missed Barah Aana, Mohandas)

20. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not – Sunil Shetty got an award for acting in Anant Mahadevan’s Red Alert – the War Within. Believe it, nobody has seen the film yet.

21. Most Subtle Expression of the year – In Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6, a man lands up with a mirror to show your andar ka kala bandar! Beat this!

22. Nagesh Kuknoor – Dont give him big budgests and big stars. He will go cuckoo-noor!

23. Vishal Bhardwaj delivered again. Five films in a row. And showed us Amole Gupte – the actor. More here.

24. Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahani tried too hard to be Andaz Apna Apna. Insanity happens! You cant plan and design it.

25. ENG Filmmaker -Madhur Bhandarkar continued his expose and it finally flopped.

26. Smirk & Smug of the Year – Vivek Oberoi in Kurbaan. It was the ROFLOL film of the year where terrorism was wrapped in chiffon saree.

27. RajKumar Hirani lied to all of us and made the same film again. As a friend said, its Munnabhai B Tech. More here.

28. Couple Of The Year – Jaideep Sahni & Shimit Amin who delivered Rocket Singh – Sales Man of the Year! More here.

29. The only U-25 who proved us wrong – Ayan Mukherjee. Wake up Sid. Confident debut. More here.

30. Only 12 scenes, not 12 roles – Ask Priyanka Chopra. Easily the best performance of the year. Length doesnt matter, performanace counts. Vishal did it. Gowariker failed.

Bravery Awards  – Aftab Shivdasani turned writer and producer with Aao Wish Karein.

Someone directed a film titled Jai-Veeru!

Abhijeet Sawant turned actor.

LOL Titles Of The Year  – They said it all. No explanations required.

Coming up next –  what to expect in 2010!

Ek-do-teen-chaar-cheh! The missing number from Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D has finally been found! Not officially! But you know where. And if you are smart enough to follow us on twitter, am sure you have already seen it by now. Its out since last two days. And those who dont follow us, its your loss! Ok, enough of cheesy self-promotion!

In the last few years, have met many die-hard fans of Anurag Kashyap who were willing to do anything to watch Paanch. The debut film of one of the most interesting filmmakers of our times. So, run! Google! Kill! Get it soon and bless the soul who did the good deed!

Few of us had the privilege of watching it on the big screem. The on-off talks of its big screen release is still going on. We doubt if it will ever get a theatrical release but even if you catch it through the Pirates of the Caribbean, make sure you pay the price when it releases.

For the kiddos who thought Rock On was all rock with a cool quotient, check out the grungy look and rawness of Paanch. Add to that Abbas Tyrewala of pre-Aditi days with his ankhiyaan chipki chipke ankhiyaan and the mindblowing main khuda…khuda hoon main! Enjoy!

BTW, here is what Sudhish Kamat, film critic of The Hindu, tweeted after watching the film…

Paanch: Raw genius!! Loved it. Near flawless except the end! KK’s fantastic! Music Rocks! What a debut, Anurag Kashyap!

PS – if you are still clueless, look for our old tweets! We believe piracy is pro-socialism when you cant afford the film but still want to catch it. Or when there is no other option. No burgers@Rs99 and no #chetanblocks!

Once he was a mathematics genius. Atleast thats what he claims. Kartik Krishnan is techie turned writer-actor-director. Busy ADing these days. He enjoys eating (overeating…as you will find in the post), hates people who try to guess his age, is a Mani Ratnam bhakt (oops, make that Mani SIR bhakt ) and has googled & memorized every possible information available on Christopher Nolan. Over to KK, on his three-scene cop role in Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl In Yellow Boots (TGIYB)!

Three weeks ago.

The casting guy and Kashyap’s AD cum co-writer cum my roommate cum dear friend Vasan asked me to come to audition for a role- A cop with 2-3 scenes with Ruth (Ruth i.e. the girl in yellow boots – Kalki Koechlin) in the film. I had been pestering Vasan for quite some time and seeing that other of actors-ADs were making cameos in the film (apparently Piyush Mishra and Naseeruddin Shah have a cameo, Vasan himself playing a blink-and-miss, Thani the other writer plays a character named after him and so on and so forth) it was but natural for me to pester him for an audition. Luckily, it went well and I was cast. (For those who don’t know one of the Patna key Presley’s is Nitin – the then chief on Dev D, the fat dark goggles brass band wala guy is Vasan, the guy who makes the MMS of Kalki is Shlok Sharma – all ADs) Being acquainted with Anurag’s penchant to cast crew members and friends in his film, I felt I had an Ok-to-decent chance.

Two weeks later – Evening

I was in an auto reaching the place – Santacruz W, Hemant bungalow (close to the famous Chinese restaurant Fat Wong or something) for my role. Had been growing a moustache and rehearsing my few lines for the past few days.

The usual – one vanity van for Kalki, Prashant (the ‘male protagonist’ of the film) and Anurag himself. ADs running around with cue sheets, props, costumes, and walkie talkies (a must for any shoot), script copies, scenes to be shot, the camera crew etc etc. Anurag looked usually pleased with the ongoings except every once in a while he would appear angry whenever someone messed up.

EXT.  RUTH’s HOUSE  NIGHT

My first shot – the first time I meet Ruth ….

“Ready Sir”

“Tu yahaan se aana …nahin nahin …yahaan baithe raina…cigg peete rehna …woh udhar se aayegi tu khade ho ke ussey boliyo, end mein tu zor se hansiyo!!!” (Come here. No no be seated there. Smoke your ciggs. When she comes you stand up and say your lines. In the end you do an LOL)

“I do an LOL???”

“Yes. You have been CAST for your LOL!”

“Ok sir.”

The funny thing is me and Vasan were trying/thinking before how else to do it. Variations – straight faced, angry, sleazy, verbose. Eventually it was the sleazy/funny which Anurag chose.

“Ready Sir”

Rajiv Ravi (the wonderfully chilled out DOP) gave me my marks. Kunal the sound guy (uber cool-too young for his experience-shares his cigg with me when I run out) tells me I have been miked well (it’s a sync sound film). I’m bloody nervous. Seeing it on screen and criticizing the actor, feeling that the director could have got better performance from the secondary cast is one thing, being there in those shoes (or boots if you are missing my horrible puns) is another.

“Ready ready”

I woke up.

ACTION –

I have always wanted to know how Kashyap directs his actors. And today I got a taste of it. No puppet-movement, no sticking verbatim to the lines, no referencing the script again and again. Giving them complete freedom but guiding them in case they go wrong. Almost as a friend, mentor and NOT as an angry old/young man who would yell, abuse, slap his actors if needed. Completely different from the ‘common perception’ of a director.

Of what I have been told, in this film Kashyap is taking more takes than usual. DevD was 2-3, in this one it’s 4-5, sometimes 8.

Sometimes it’s also maybe because it’s all handheld camera, No tripods, No film. All digital (HD). Indie & Cheap.

Cut Print Wrap.

“Sir achcha tha na ?” (Was it good ?)

“Haan haan mere paas 4 good takes hain na!” (Yeah yeah don’t worry)

Spoke to ADs and asked them if it was ok. All were thankfully kind and forgiving.

Was told they will shoot the next scene there too. Costume change, props, camera setups.

20 mins later Anurag decides against it and wants to shoot the scene the next day, in the daylight. EP Scheduling & Movie magic ki maa ki aankh!

PACKUP – next day reporting time 11 am.

I reached on time to see ADs relaxed. Kalki arrives at 11.30, Rajeev sir at 12 and Anurag at 12.30.

“Mujhe bhook lagi hai. Main kuch kha ke aata hoon. Chalega ? “

“Am always up for a free lunch”

We went in to the Chinese restaurant and ordered some food. I was in my Cop costume (with the heavy fake gun safely but uncomfortably tucked into my trousers) and talking about the film. In between calls from frantic ADs (Shlok Sharma- 4 missed calls), we were arguing whether the film TGIYB was a drama film or a thriller.

“4 months 3 weeks 2 days is a thriller”

“It’s not a thriller in the conventional sense. It’s a drama film.”

“It’s a film which keeps you on the edge. Most of the new Scandinavian films/books are such crime thrillers.” He went on to name a few which I have completely forgotten. “Don’t be limited by the boundaries of the genre”

“Hmmmmm”

The conversation then went onto writers, old & new struggling etc.

“Passion, enthusiasm, talent, cinema knowledge & discussion is fine but show it on paper/film. The script/film should reflect it. Cinema is not made over cups of coffee”. A statement I completely agreed with.

“Sir shot is ready”

“Aa raha hoon na !!!”

The BIG scene – almost 3 mins of screen time …Scene entry-exit combined. And of course the laughter. 2 min looong take. Shot from one, two and then three angles.

My brief interaction with Prashant(the co writer and actor in the skeleton woman) – he comes across as a fairly capable actor with complete submission to the hands of the director. The scene required us to be awkward and awkward we were.

Another take – me in foreground. Some logistic issues. Why is the cop behaving in such fashion? Why is he like this ?

“Yahaan Tu actor hai acting kar na …jab tu critic banega tab poochiyo” Anurag pulls my leg.

“Yes sir” I complied feeling embarrassed.

CUT PRINT.

I felt I could have been better. Was sulking around when the lunch was being served.

“Kya hua ???” Rajiv Sir asked.

“Kuch nahi, lag raha hai thoda better kar sakta tha” Vasan spoke for me

“Aisa sochega, life mein hamesha sad rahega” Rajiv sir quipped.

“Hmmmmmmmm”

Big break after set ka khana (chicken, veg, prawns, dal, rice, roti, curd and gulaabjamun, pepsi included).

Had almost gone off to sleep. My first tryst with the vanity van was quite warm 🙂

“Shot ready sir”

Ruth comes with me waiting in the background. I meet her and coax favours. Small scene, again a single take with no cut aways.

2 min before the shot is being taken Anurag yells and improvises. Asks for the makeup man to come into the frame as a featured extra, stand there, and then leave. On the spur of the moment, with no pre-conceived planning whatsoever.

Take 1 – CUT

I had gone ahead and improvised the line in clever connivance with Kunal and Neil (the chief AD). We felt we were adding more colour to the character. Our faces fell when after cut Anurag said “Bahut over kar raha hai !!!”

Oops.

Retake with underplay, then retake with more sleaze & laughter.

CUT  PRINT  NEXT SCENE

“Sir, ek aur lete hai na. Thoda aur better karte hain” (Another take please)

“Nahi re editing ke liye toh kuch chod de. Editing pe banate hai na. Editing pe bhi toh banegi na picture”

I shut my trap, feeling unsatisfied. Thought could have done better but …let’s see.

I was done for the day and finally could look at the camera display/TV monitor to see how it is looking. This scene Kalki wakes up and gets a call. Was looking colorful and more interesting. Whatever I saw, I wasn’t disappointed to see the results/shot. Digital surely seems the way to go for Indie.

Satisfied, I left the sets with a polite thank you to Anurag.

Let’s wait for the first rough cut.

PS. – KK claims that the role is important to the script. So chances are it will not get edited out and you will be able to see him on big screen soon! Yipee!

Anurag Kashyap Kalki KoechlinOn his blog diary, Anurag Kashyap has announced his new film titled That Girl In Yellow Boots (TGIYB)!  Its written by him and his girlfriend Kalki Koechlin and is a thriller!

He has already started shooting it and is experimenting with the newly launched Canon 7D! The film features Kalki in the lead alongwith Prashant Prakash (her co-actor in the play The Skeleton Woman) and Naseeruddin Shah. It also features other theatre actors like Gulshan Devaiyah, Pooja Swaroop, Kumud Mishra, Shiv Subramanyam and Divya Jagdale. After discovering Amit Trivedi (Aamir & Dev D), Anurag is again launching a new music director Naren Chandavarkar. Rajiv Ravi is behind the camera again!

This film is not part of Anurag’s nine film deal with UTV. Its complete indie, funded by independent producers. He has already started shooting the film and will complete it by next month.

So, what else we know ? Ahhmmmm….wwhmmm…cough cough….Plenty! But not now. Ok, it will have enough shock value, much like Dev D. And a happy ending too, much like Dev D ? Hmmmmm. Yes, ofcourse but not actually! Keep guessing till our next post.

You can read his full post here.

anurag kashyapWe know its the year of 9! Tim Burton produced Shane Acker’s 9! Peter Jackson gave us Neil Blomkamp’s District Nine. And we are waiting eagerly for Rob Marshall’s musical Nine!

And here in bollywood, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has also scored 9! Believe it or not, he has signed a nine film deal with UTV Motion Pictures, to be made in the next three years! Woohoo! All it takes is just one hit film, Dev D! Though not much details is out yet but it seems Anurag will direct 4-5 films and will be involved as Creative Producer for the rest 4-5. Well, we have never believed in quantifying cinema but then, if someone like Anurag Kashyap is getting the money to make the kind of films he wants to do, we are waiting and how!

And according to TOI, the next film of Anurag Kashyap which is soon going into production is a smart edgy thriller titled Happy Ending. Anurag denies the title, and says its called Yellow Boots. The script has been co-written by his girlfreind Kalki Koechlin, who also stars in it alongwith Naseeruddin Shah. You can read the full report on their first labour of love here.

Well, thats the rumour doing the rounds.Aamir-Khan

It seems Danny Boyle will present Anurag Kashyap’s next film titled Bombay Velvet (BV). Its a period flick set in the early 1940’s Mumbai. According to this report in Mid-day, Aamir Khan has already heard the narration of the film but still to give his nod to the project.

What we know is that Bombay Velvet is planned as a triology and will be produced by Studio18.

prateik-babbarThe other casting news is about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next titled My Friend Pinto. The film will be produced by Bhansali and will star Prateik Babbar. It will be directed by debutant Raghav Dar who has assissted Mani Ratnam and Abbas Tyrewala.

You can read the full report here. And since this report is by Subhash K Jha, who is known to be close to Bhansali, you can trust this newsbit.

anurag kashyapWoohoo! The poster boy of desi indie cinema is going places and how!

The jury list of this year’s Venice Film Festival is out. Two-time Golden Lion and Oscar-winning director Ang Lee will serve as the jury president in the international competition section. He will be joined by French actress Sandrine Bonnaire, Italian film-maker Liliana Cavani, American director Joe Dante, Italian songwriter and singer Luciano Ligabu and our writer/director Anurag Kashyap (Dev D, No Smoking, Black Friday ).

Aha….finally an Indian name on international film circuit without L’Oreal and other shit! It’s been long.

Venice Film Festival will run from September 2-12.
