Kaminey 2First we read that there are four writers who have been credited for Kaminey. Vishal Bhardwaj, Supratik Sen, Sabrina Dhawan and Abhishek Chaubey. And now there is one more addition.

In an interview to Mumbai Miror, Vishal has clarified that the story started with a fifth person. To quote Vishal

Four years ago, Mira Nair assembled writers from America, India and Canada to mentor ten students from Asia and Africa. This scriptwriting workshop was held in Kampala, Yuganda.

A young writer from Nairobi showed me a script which was a story about twin brothers and what happens in their life in a span of 24 hours. It was like parallel cutting and I really liked that approach. Mira and I spoke about it at length and both of us felt that it was a typical Bollywood masala movie.

I was in touch with that writer for the next six months. He also sent me another draft. Then two-three years later I asked him to sell me the idea. He was in need of money so I sent him some 4000 dollars and bought the script to make any time.

I picked up that idea and added Bollywood masala and my dark and serious side to it. So now, one brother stammers and the other has a lisp. I thought that it would be exciting to make. But it wasn’t that easy. It was very tough and I had to work really hard. I would never like to make such a film again.

We wonder if the person is credited in the film. Because in publicity material there is no mention of any fifth person. But then, do you credit someone for story idea ? May be, or is it more than an idea. Unlike others, who makes sure to hide every source of inspiration, even if its remake, it feels good to read that Vishal is giving credit to the person who deserves it. Wish he had given out the writer’s name too.

filmwritingWe posted about the NFDC’s Screenwriting Lab at Locarno Film Festival in association with Binger Filmlab here. The result is finally out. NFDC has selected six writers/script for the Script Lab. And here is the good news – one of us is in. Here is the complete list of those who are going to participate in the lab.

1. Aparna Pednekar – Mumbai based journalist ( Verve/Vogue/GQ India) . Script – F20.

2. Pratim Das Gupta – Calcutta based journalist ( The Telegraph). Script – Vanish.

3. Siddharth Singh – Mumbai based writer-director ( TVC’s/docus/music videos ). Script – Synchronicity.

4. Somen Mishra – Mumbai based journalist ( CNN IBN) . Script – The Prompter’s Son.

5. Priya Krishnaswamy – Pune based editor (features/docus. FTII grad).

6.  Vinod Shankar – Chennai based actor-writer-director. Script – Adigaram 79 .

Hopefully we will be able to blog about all the screenwriting tips from the script lab at Locarno Film festival (8th -12th August) and then the pitching session ( 24th-26th November) in Goa. If interested, keep reading and wish us luck!

Kambakkht IshqThose of you who have seen the film Kambakkht Ishq, know the suffering. Those of you who haven’t, must have checked out the reviews. But what most people don’t know is that its an official remake of Kamal Haasan starrer Tamil film Pammal K Sambandam.

According to this report in HT, Sajid Nadiadwala bought the remake rights for 75 lakhs. And thats why there is no story credit in the film. But believe it or not, four writers have been credited for the screenplay.

Screenplay- Sabbir Khan, Anvita Dutt Guptan, Kiran Kotrial, Ishita Moitra.

Sabir Khan is the director and have been ADing since last few years. Anvita Dutt Guptan is the writer/lyricist of Dostana (dialogues), Bachna Aae Haseena (dialogues/lyrics), Tashan (lyrics) & Neal & Nikki (dialogues). Kiran Kotrial has credits for Ishq Vishq (dialogues), Fida ( dialogues), Deewane Huye Paagal (story/screenplay) & Waah! Life Ho to Aisi (dialogues).  For Ishita Moitra, this is first writing credit.

Isn’t it Ripley’s believe it or not ? Four writers writing a remake and they come up with this shit. Too many cooks ? OR may be the number of writers writing a film is directly proportional to the dumb quotient of the film. And to dumb it down more, you need more writers! Remember Love Story 2050 ?

Love Story 2050 (Screenplay) – Harry Baweja, Rowena Baweja

Additional screenplay – Bhavani Iyer, Suparn Varma, Karan Razdan, Prem Soni.

Six writers for Love Story 2050! BTW, if you don’t know, Harry is Daddy B and Rowena is sister B.

Anvita Dutt GuptanAnd those of you thought Kambakkht Ishq’s jokes & dialogues are sexist & offensive, you would be surprised to know that the writer is Anvita Dutt Guptan. Why blame the boys always for being sexist! Or may be some exceptions do prove the rule. Anvitaji, aap kya paan kar rahi hai aajkal ?

LuckIts DOOMED.

The weather was cloudy. But still no signs of rain. We went to Juhu beach to have some chana zor garam. Ripley’s Believe It or Not ! As we unwrapped the pack, we discovered that its the first page from Luck’s script. Imran Khan’s new film directed by Soham Shah. It also stars Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa and Ravi Kishan.

We ran back to the chana-wala and asked him for some more chana. And as chewed more chana, the complete script came out, page by page.

We first wrote about it here and now we got the proof.

The script seems to be one of the earlier drafts. But in terms of story/plot/synopsis, there is lot of similarity (read plagiarism) between Luck and the two films 13 Tzameti and Intacto. Yes, Soham can take credit for killing 13 Tzameti.  The screenplay is credited to Rensil D’ Silva and felt like reading five episodes of reality tv show Khatroon Ke Khiladi back to back. And a boring one.

If  the hero and heroine are participants in a game where you can survive only by winning, you don’t need brains to figure out who will win the game in the end. Its hindi phillum.

Last time when we wrote about the script of Guzaarish and put up this post ( read here & here) , it made headlines and lot of readers questioned us. So this time, here is a scene of Luck from the script. Need we say more! We don’t lie.

The scene summarises the film. We are guessing Ram is Imran Khan and Khan is Sanjay Dutt.

Ram

You know about…

Khan

I told you. Khan knows everything. (He takes some notes and shoves them into Ram’s hand.)Luck is a crazy thing Ram. Not many people have it. It’s more valuable than all that money you’re holding in your hands. Because, luck is what makes money for people. For you. For me.

Ram

Who are you?

Khan

You could say I’m an invester.

Ram

Invester… like in the stock market?

Khan

No.

Ram

Property…real estate?

Khan

Not really. You see I invest in something far better (leaning close to Ram now). I invest in luck. People’s luck.

Dear Imran,

After all those big talks, you signed this film ( read this shit)!  Aapka to bad Luck hi kharab hai unless it turns out to be one more surprise hit like Race or Ghajini. You can never figure out the audiences IQ. So hope for the best that the dumbs turn out in hordes.

As we read the script while chewing chana garam which seemed more interesting than the script, we could hear only one dialogue. Remember Kidnap. Imran & Sanjay Dutt.

Sanjay Dutt – Go to hell.

Imran Khan – Hell is right here Raina!

(This one is no different. And yey like Minisha Lamba in bikini, this one got Shruti Hassan in swimming pool.)

We surely arent buying the tickets. Give us 13 Tzameti anyday anywhere!

fightclub

Thats what the buzz is. We would like to believe its NOT. Plagiarism ? Not again! Because we have never heard of Imtiaz Ali as dvd director. But then, you never know. May be only the basic idea, story, plot or synopsis. Or it can be coincidence. Lets check out.

Zui Hao De Shi Guang ( Three Times)

To quote from Imdb.com –

Zui Hao De Shi GuangThe film wisely opens with the most successful of the three ‘Times’ – 1966 A Time for Love – – tracing the emergence of timid passion between a lad headed for the military and a young girl who works in a pool hall. They communicate by letters after their first brief introductory encounter and circumstances interfere with the progress of their relationship in 1966 Taiwan.

The middle section 1911 A Time for Freedom is gorgeous visually and conceptually the director has elected to use the cinematic form of the period (silent movie) to tell his story about the freeing of a young girl from the grip of a brothel madam and surveys the political tensions between Japan and China as the quietly lighted story of love and yearning unfolds.

The film ends with 2005 A Time for Youth and here our lovers are caught up in the pollution of smog, cellphones, emails, nightclubs, and infidelities for same sex affairs that speak loudly about the tenor of the times.

Two actors play the lead roles in three stories set in three different years.

And here is a promo of the film

Love Aaj Kal

loveaajkalposter 2Love Aaj Kal is the story of Jai ( Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone). It starts at a cafe in London which is run by Veer Singh ( Rishi Kapoor). The duo meet, jump into bed first and then they fall in love. With Jai-Meera’s love story, there is parallel track of Veer Singh, his love story with Harleen, which happens in flashback and is set in Delhi. One is today’s love story and the other is of yesteryears. Saif Ali also plays the younger Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor).

Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion, like a financial transaction. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naïve and silly about Harleen in the days of his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same.

So there is the frolic and despair of modern living, the liberation and confusion. And there is the past – the times of innocence and compulsion. And there is distance, and the fondness that increases with distance. Gaps widen between two people, but bridges keep growing too.

Conclusion

The basic idea suspiciously sounds similar. One is Love Aaj Kal and the other is Love Aaj Kal Parsoon. One is Two Times, other is Three Times. But since its Imtiaz Ali, we would like to reserve our comments till its release. Lets see.

dibakarDibakar Banerjee is gearing up for not one but two films. A quickie and a biggie!

The quickie starts next month. Its in digital, about the digital world and will have new faces.  Love, lust, betrayal, sex, all packed in shoe string budget. The film is produced by Ekta Kapoor. Dibakar & Ekta! Whats the common ground!

The biggie is a political thriller and goes on floors by the year end. Dibakar’s current favourite Abhay Deol will be in it for sure. Its a satire about politics at the basic level. We know that Dibakar has also signed Imran Khan to star with Abhay Deol. But we are not sure if its the same film or not. Will keep posted as we get more details.

imran khanOur header has become too long. Because we could not prioritise which one is more important. We read the story of Sanjay Doom Gadhvi’s film 7 Days In Paris. We think Imran Khan should be worried about the choices he is making. And Katrina Kaif is out of the film. Since all three news bits are related, we have randomly put down our seven, ok, eight pointers. Join the dots and see if it makes sense.

1. Every director in bollywood wants to set a love story in Paris, every one wants to make their version of Before Sunrise & Before Sunset.  And Sanjay Gadhvi is NO Richard Linklater.

2. 7 Days in Paris ( Spoiler Alert) – its a love story set in Paris. Two strangers. Case of mistaken identity. They fall in love. First half is all walk the talk and talk while walking. 2nd half – mistaken identities revealed. Lovers tiff and finally a happy ending. And yeh, there is an important bad pasta scene in the film! In short, nothing new in the film and we surely aren’t looking forward to it!

3. Gadhvi has changed the script following Imran Khan’s suggestions. We have read the old version, not sure if it has been changed for good or bad. Imran Khan need not pretend smart. He needs to act smart. Check.

4. After the debacle of Kidnap, Imran Khan thinks love stories are the way to success. And he wants to do only love stories now! Dude, it cant be Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na every time. A bad film is a bad film, thriller or love story!Check again.

sanjay gadhvi5. Gadhvi is close to Vandana Malik, head of Studio18. Her daughter Avantika Malik is dating Imran. And Studio18 is producing the film. We doubt our mother-in-laws. We doubt those mom-in-laws more who can sign fat cheques. And a desperate mom-in-law who wants her daughter to get married to Imran Khan, is dangerous! Check check!

6. Those who have seen Imran Khan’s Luck, they think Luck makes Kidnap look like masterpiece. No comment. Check check!

7. And those who have read the full script of 7 Days In Paris, they are willing to bet that Gadhvi will make even Paris look boring! And are ROFL reading the pasta scene again and again.

Katrina-Kaif8. According to Mumbai Mirror, in the new script, Katrina Kaif’s role has been cut drastically. And so, she is not interested in doing the film anymore. You can read the full story here. We are not sure who has a better understanding of scripts – Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sanjay Doom Gadhvi, Vandana Malik or Studio18!

love aaj kal6Love Aaj Kal = Love Aaj + Love Kal. For the synopsis/plot/story of Love Aaj Kal, read on..

Love Aaj – London, San Francisco, Delhi – 2009.

Jai and Meera is a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together but do not believe in tying each other down. So when life pulls them in different directions, they decide to go with the flow. “These Heer-Ranjha, Romeo-Juliet type janam janam ka saath type couples exist only in story books,” Jai says. In the real life, we have to be practical.

Love Kal – Delhi, Calcutta – 1965.

Veer Singh is struck by a thunderbolt when he sees Harleen for the first time. Soon after, he stands under a tree and swears that “is janam mein aur har janam mein… yehi meri votti banegi – Harleen Kaur.” He travels a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her.

Love Aaj Kal

Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion, like a financial transaction. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naïve and silly about Harleen in the days of his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same. So there is the frolic and despair of modern living, the liberation and confusion. And there is the past – the times of innocence and compulsion. And there is distance, and the fondness that increases with distance. Gaps widen between two people, but bridges keep growing too.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, it stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Pudukone and Rishi Kapoor.

simon beaufoyIts official. Simon Beaufoy has confirmed the news to Daily Telegraph. You can read more about it  here. He is all set to write the next film for Danny Boyle. Its the Slumdog Millionaire team again.

And its an adaptation of Suketu Mehta’s book Maximum City : Bombay Lost & Found. Remember we told you first! Here is the post.

Danny boyle has bought the rights of the book. But the big problem is Maximum City is a non-fiction work. So Beaufoy’s job is to find a story in it first! Mehta’s book is  a collage of essays, travelogue and journalistic account.

maximum cityMaximum City : Bombay Lost & Found was shortisted for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.

Simon Beaufoy is in talks with Mehta regarding the adaptation as he needs lot of creative liberties to make this non-fiction account into a fictional one.

kangana blog cut

If there is something called Bollywood Bravery Award, hand it to Kangna Ranaut this year. Because not many actors in bollywood would dare to do so. And its more gutsy if its coming from someone like Kangna, who is single, working and without a godfather in the big bad bollywood! We love her! It might be good publicity for her official website/blog www.kangnaranaut.com , but its still a brave step. Here is the direct link to the blogpost.

Compare it to Amitabh Bachchan’s blog, whose non stop ramblings appear almost everyday. But he has no confessions to make. Just political correctness. Nothing personal to share. Its all oooh-i-love-my-EF’s…extended family… on and on. Whats the point of having a blog if you cant open up and write honestly.  And knowing his track record, we can bet that he will never write on any controversial issue of his life.

The news of Kangna Ranaut’s split with her boyfreind Adhyayan Suman is already out. But to make it official on the blog, it hasnt happened before. We are loving it! Now thats what you call Bold & Beautiful!
