UPDATE – We had put this post last year. But the makers got to know about it and thought it was too early and might harm the prospect of the film. So we removed the post. Now that the film’s trailer is out, we are posting it again. Haven’t change anything else.

This one is strictly for the fanboys. Dibakar Banerjee, easily one of the best directors among the current lot, is busy working on his fourth film titled Shanghai. And a good soul did a good deed for the day – mailed us the synopsis of the film. And it seems much more than just synopsis. The film is based on Vassilis Vassilikos’ novel Z. Costa Gavras’ film Z was also based on the same novel. Click here to read the synopsis of Z.

And yes, here is the SPOILER ALERT! Read on…

A politically volatile state in India gears up for two much awaited events : the assembly elections and the completion of a multi-billion dollar special economic zone (SEZ) deal, both timed together to help the ruling party clinch the elections.

This is a story of modern India. A country ruled by contradictions. A country whose elite leadership is preoccupied with the growth rate and elected politicians thrive on the resentment created by economic development. This story is playing out across every town in India that wants to find itself on the map of “shining India” at any cost.

A prominent and respected social activist, Doctor Ahmedi, known as nationally and internationally for his successful struggle against the governments and multinationals to protect the rights of the poor, accuses the state government of acquiring huge real estate for the project without adequate compensation to the people living on it.

On the day of Doctor Ahmedi’s arrival, Shalini Pearson, a British social worker working in the working-class area where the SEZ is going to be set-up, learns of a threat to Doctor Ahmedi’s life. She warns the party, but her warnings are not taken seriously. They tell her, “You cannot afford to be afraid if you decide to stand up against injustice.”

That evening, amid a turbulent meeting in Bharat Nagar, Doctor Ahemdi with his supporters exhorts the locals to fight for their rights. A handful of police officials keep a mute watch, ostensibly to protect the doctor. A lone photojournalist, Jogi Parmar, is present.

As the doctor and his supporters are leaving the venue, a scuffle break out between the supporters and opponents of the doctor. In the melee, a truck crashes into the crowd, heads for the doctor, mows him down inches away from Shalini and escapes. One of the doctor’s supporters chases the truck and gets on to it. A distraught Shalini rushes to the doctor to the hospital, where he slips into a deep coma.

The state machinery moves into high gear to defuse the situation. The truck driver is caught and a case of drunk driving is registered. The doctor’s wife accuses the state of a conspiracy to kill her husband. The allegation is quickly countered by setting up of an enquiry commission by a former judge, Padmanabhiah.

Soon skeletons start tumbling out as the judge starts his meticulous investigation into the accident. Truth and falsehood get mixed up as testimonies get recorded. Questions are left unanswered or stalled. What seems to have been an open-and-shut case soon becomes a conspiracy and a cold-blooded plot to get rid of Doctor Ahmedi.

Shalini, working relentlessly to strengthen the case, finds the first witness, a local cable operator and photojournalist Jogi’s boss, who has accidently recorded a  telephone conversation between the local politician, Bhausaheb, and an unknown person plotting to get rid of Ahmedi. However the witness is found dead and the tape is lost before it can be presented to the judge.

Shanghai is a political story about the workings of Indian democracy told through three unlikely protagonists with ground level differing aims and often conflicting with each other as they start unraveling the story behind Doctor Ahmedi’s death.

Judge Padmanabhiah for the first time emerges out of the legalistic cocoon to understand the real, messy truth at the ground level. Jogi starts fighting for truth – something his opportunistic, hustling mind could have never thought possible before.

The danger increases, the hunter becomes the hunted. Truth pits them against the might of a  ruthless political machinery. Hanging in balance is the control of the state, power equations in the country’s political capital, Delhi, and the very meaning of justice in contemporary India.

So, what’s your bet ?

Yawwwnnnn! One more love story with two good looking wooden blocks – Imran Khan & Deepika Padukone.

‘I hate luv storys’ is the maxim Jay lives by. But as an assistant director to Veer, the most famous romantic filmmaker of Indian Film Industry, Jay has little option but to live with larger than life, glossy, cinematic love on an everyday basis. Things only get worse when he is made to work under the new production designer on the film… Simran, with whom he shares the strangest first encounter!

Simran loves luv storys; So much so that even her life has begun to resemble one. With her ideal job and the perfect boyfriend, Raj, she lives a blissful, dreamy life; One that is rudely interrupted by Jay’s cynicism.

The turmoil’s of Jay and Simran’s life, is ironically interweaved with the Luv Story that they are working on…. But will Jay and Simran ever find their own Luv Story – go find it out in a theatre near you on 2nd July.

So, Raj & Simran have become Jai & Simran! Aur bolo! Though we still feel that “Hate” is the key word in our dictionary as far as this film is concerned, but have to admit that it got a supercool official website. Beats everything else that we have seen in recent times. Click here to check it out.

Music is by Vishal-Shekhar and Lyrics by Anvita Dutt, Kumaar & Vishal Dadlani. And here is the first song promo of the film…

And if you missed it earlier, the first trailer of the film….

Yes, am bored, sick, dead and tired of film references within a film! And its more cringeworthy if the films belong to the same production house! Sample this new one – the great minds at Dharma Productions have gone ahead and made a film thats not only is a film in a film but makes all the WTF filmy references! It stars Imran Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Samir Dattani , directed by debutant Punit Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar. Boy hates Luv Storys (yes, thats how its spelt), Girl loves Luv Storys, they will fall in love! OMG ! What a surprise….kuch ho na ho….main sachmuch nahi samjhoonga!

When there is a new Pepsi/Coke campaign on air, you know that summer is near. Coke launched its new campaign with a new brand ambassador – Imran Khan. This is the first brand endorsement deal of Imran Khan. And he follows the footsteps of Mamujaan Aamir Khan who has been endorsing Coke since last few year.

Imran stars with Kalki Koechlin in the new Tv commercial. The new campaign “Open Happiness” has been conceptualised by the creative team of McCann Erickson that includes Prasoon Joshi, Ashish Chakravarty, Tirtha Ghosh and Nakul Sharma. And the film has been directed by Dibakar Banerjee. If you havent seen it yet, click the play button.

2009 – The Master of Feel Bad started the year delivering his career’s first hit and the Master of Feel Good Cinema ended the year with a recording breaking monster hit! Aha, not that bad if we count only the boundaries. After the musical notes of the year, we sat down to discuss the filmy notes of the year. Here it is – the good, the bad and the fuglies!

1. Best Credit Roll – If ever a credit roll said something so simply and superbly, this is it. Luck By Chance. Also great debut by Zoya Akhtar.

2. Anurag Kashyap turned musical and how! More than a dozen songs and we discovered Amit Trivedi.

3. Anurag Kashyap – 2009 belongs to only one director. Dev D, Gulaal and even Paanch finally got a release, you know where. Whats more, he finished shooting his next film That Girl In Yellow Boots in just 13 days. Aur bolo ?

PS : The same Anurag Kashyap wrote the dialogues for Kurbaan ! Strange bedfellows remained strange.

4. Nobody, we repeat nobody, can save Harman/Hurrman/Harmann/Harrman/Whatever it is Baweja.

5. Wooden Film of the Year – New York. Three good looking woods with zero expression.

6. Ranbir Kapoor – Dude of the year! He is not only working with best directors of bollywood but delivering his best too. Cool & confused, fool & romantic, middle class & lost – he did it all.

7.Imran Luck Khan – The poster boy of 2008 is light years behind Ranbir. He only talks cool and acts still uncool.  Competition, whats that ?

8. Imtiaz Ali has only one story to tell. The journey of cool and confused lovers on the verge of marriage. First time, they were about to mary. Second time, they were close to marriage. This time, they finally married and then solved their problem. More here and here.

9. Samir Karnik got money to make one more movie. Who ? Where ? Why ? How ?

10. Rani Mukherjee’s career is over. Hadippa!

11. Multiplex cinema & hits are not everything. Its a big myth. Ask the makers of Wanted. Or is it only Salman Khan ?

12. And if its Salman Khan, why Main Aur Mrs Khanna packed up in just two days ? As they say, nobody knows anything. And what was UTV smoking ?

13. Overrated Gimmicky shit of the year – Paa. More ramblings here.

14. R Balki should stick to making tv commercials. One idea and thats it. He also told the same story again. Smart & dying child bring lovers back together. Age gap somewhere. Check.

15. Akshay Kumar’s bubble busted and how!. He failed everywhere. Chandni Chowk, China, Hollywood, under water, inside or outside Tasveer.

16. The Invisible Director – Who is Anurag Singh ? Does anyone knows him ? The man who put the last nail in the coffin of Rani’s acting career. Hadippa!

17. Sanjay Gupta and gang (read Suparn) are still copying. Even the promos! Now the Unknown ones! More here.

18. Suresh Nair – the only writer to have two big films releases on the same friday. Aladin & London Dreams and both flopped.

19. Underrated Film – Sooni Tarporevala’s delightful Little Zizou, where all the possible parsis united to turn bollywood into pollywood! ( Missed Barah Aana, Mohandas)

20. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not – Sunil Shetty got an award for acting in Anant Mahadevan’s Red Alert – the War Within. Believe it, nobody has seen the film yet.

21. Most Subtle Expression of the year – In Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6, a man lands up with a mirror to show your andar ka kala bandar! Beat this!

22. Nagesh Kuknoor – Dont give him big budgests and big stars. He will go cuckoo-noor!

23. Vishal Bhardwaj delivered again. Five films in a row. And showed us Amole Gupte – the actor. More here.

24. Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahani tried too hard to be Andaz Apna Apna. Insanity happens! You cant plan and design it.

25. ENG Filmmaker -Madhur Bhandarkar continued his expose and it finally flopped.

26. Smirk & Smug of the Year – Vivek Oberoi in Kurbaan. It was the ROFLOL film of the year where terrorism was wrapped in chiffon saree.

27. RajKumar Hirani lied to all of us and made the same film again. As a friend said, its Munnabhai B Tech. More here.

28. Couple Of The Year – Jaideep Sahni & Shimit Amin who delivered Rocket Singh – Sales Man of the Year! More here.

29. The only U-25 who proved us wrong – Ayan Mukherjee. Wake up Sid. Confident debut. More here.

30. Only 12 scenes, not 12 roles – Ask Priyanka Chopra. Easily the best performance of the year. Length doesnt matter, performanace counts. Vishal did it. Gowariker failed.

Bravery Awards  – Aftab Shivdasani turned writer and producer with Aao Wish Karein.

Someone directed a film titled Jai-Veeru!

Abhijeet Sawant turned actor.

LOL Titles Of The Year  – They said it all. No explanations required.

Coming up next –  what to expect in 2010!

PrinceWhat else do you expect if its a Vivek Oberoi film. Its got to be the ROFLOL title of the year! WTF is ITS  SHOWTIME! And Prince!! Kahan ka bhai ? Kidhar hai mere laal ? And if thats not enough, check out what the producer of the film Tips have been upto!

Here’s a video uploaded by the makers of the film that gives us audience reaction to the trailer/promo/first look of the film, and if they are going to watch the film or not, based on what they saw!

We are ROFLOL watching this video. Why ? Read on.

1. Who edited the video ? Why do we need to hear the invisible man’s voice some 50 times asking the same question – what do you think of the trailer ? Just once and it would have been perfectly fine. Then put all the answers together. Its simple.

2. Do check out the way the invisible man asks the second question, in authoritative voice – So, you are going to watch the film, for sure ?

He doesnt look for options. He doesnt ask the question – Are you going to watch the film ? He already knows the answer. He is just re-confirming it. And he adds “for sure” too.

3. And where is the promo ? What trailer have they seen that has impressed them so much! Except one, there is no more bad, or even not-so-good reaction.

4. Why is the voice so concerned about asking who the producer of the film is ? Brand recall ? We seriously doubt. Or is it because Tauranijis would sign the cheques and they would love to hear their names. And from what we know about them, they surely love their name and face on every possible place!

5. If its about making the right buzz by getting audience’s reaction, then check out how the Paranormal Activity guys used the test screening for their promo. The film made on 15,000$ has made close to 100 million$! As the rulebook says, show it, dont say it!

Yes, we are waking up to Hollywood’s mantra of test screenings and all that jazz. But its still what we want to hear. The last film which got fantabulous response at test screenings was Imran Khan’s Luck. And we all know the result. Well, we said and wrote much more just by reading the script. And even put out an open bet, its all here. So, Dear Mr Filmmaker, do mail us the script if you really want some honest feedback ? We are not in any entourage party!

Also, the problem is we dont get the right feedback from the viewers always as there is a sense of gratitude for making you the chosen one to have a sneak peek. There is always sugar coating as nobody wants to say it as it is. Much like what happens at a premiere of any film. Nobody hates the film, everyone congratulates the director and every member of the film is made to feel that its the best that they have done. Once out of the theatre, the smses starts.

Zoya AkhtarIts confirmed! And it cant get better!

Her debut film Luck By Chance made more headlines for casting than for anything else. After almost every actor turned down the role, she had no option but to settle for her brother Farhan Akhtar. But what a debut it was! One of the best in recent times! And finally someone put some creative thought and effort in designing the opening credits of the film. We fell in love as soon as the film started.

But it seems its the same story for her new untitled film. Ranbir Kapoor & Imran Khan intially agreed but later on backed out of it. And now Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol have agreed to star in her film. Ofcourse, Farhan Akhtar will also be part of it. We are waiting and how!

imran khanDhoom doom doom! Dil bole doom doom doom. Yes, we belong to the IB Club for sure, otherwise how do you explain the fact that when a film gets shelved, we are feeling happy about it. Sickos! But, its Sanjay Gadhvi! Sanjay Doom Gadhvi! The man is nice but when there are million other jobs to keep yourself busy, why make films ?

Sanjay Gadhvi was planning a new film – 7 Days in Paris with Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. We first wrote about it here and till date, its one of our popular posts. And if gossipmongers are to be believed Gadhvi’s film is now shelved! And the big reason is Madam Mahalingam of Studio18! Who ? Vandana Malik, the to-be-ma-in-law of Imran Khan. It seems Sanjay had  big fight with Madam because he has been wasting Imran’s dates as he could not manage any heroine after Katrina walked out if it. And the big fight turned into bigger fight and the green light was quickly turned into red.

Poor Imran! He got nothing to do. Once a week, he keeps himself busy by writing a column for Hindustan Times. Rest six days, he reads and reads and reads scripts. Only when his girlfrind Avantika Malik recommends any script, he decides to do it. Like Kidnap, Luck!  She picked those two scripts.

BTW, he finally has found the great romantic script that he was desperately looking for – Karan Johar’s production I Hate Luv Stories! Puneet Malhotra will direct it and Sonam Kapoor will co-star in it. We read the synopsis, could not find anything great in it except the name K Jo attached to it.

Well, you know your luck is fuck when your ma-in-law and you are in the same business. And you know your luck can never get a better fuck when your ma-in-law is dumbo too! Lord save the son-in-laws!
